Aomori’s ASPAM Christmas Market 2026 is easiest to plan around one question: do you want to see the winter fireworks? The 2026 market runs from December 11 to 25 with free entry, but fireworks are scheduled on eight evenings. A non-fireworks weekday works well for a shorter visit focused on the Christmas tree, food and waterfront atmosphere.

The event uses the special area west of ASPAM, space inside the building and Aoi Umi Park. ASPAM’s distinctive triangular building is about an eight-minute walk from JR Aomori Station’s east exit. It fits naturally at the end of a central Aomori sightseeing day; families do not need to spend the whole evening outside to enjoy it.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the important exceptions. December 24, 2026 is a Thursday and December 25 is a Friday, yet both open at 11:00. Use a weekend or either of these dates for a daytime visit. On ordinary weekdays, arriving at lunchtime is too early for the market.

Fireworks dates: opening night starts earlier

Dates Planned time
December 11, 2026 Around 18:00
December 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25, 2026 Around 19:00

If fireworks are your priority, aim to reach the market roughly 30–60 minutes beforehand. That is a planning allowance, not a reserved viewing arrangement. Locate the return route and a suitable open area before buying food, and follow staff directions rather than blocking paths or shop entrances for a photograph.

Weather can alter outdoor events. Check the ASPAM Christmas Market website again before setting out, and keep a worthwhile alternative such as dinner in central Aomori. Avoid booking a tight onward connection immediately after the display; the walk, crowds and train change all need time.

What to see and how to browse

Start with the Christmas tree

An approximately ten-metre Christmas tree decorated with around 20,000 LEDs forms the main visual focus. Walk around the accessible area first to find an angle you like, then return for photographs. For portraits, look for light falling on faces as well as the illuminated background, and step aside once your group has finished.

Look through the food stalls before ordering

Huts and food trucks provide Christmas food and drinks. Browse once before deciding how much to buy, especially if you also want dinner elsewhere. Menus, prices and stock belong to individual vendors; do not build your evening around an assumed souvenir mug or a particular dish that has not been listed.

For children or a larger group, a small warm meal beforehand makes queues easier to manage. Free admission covers entering the market, not food, shopping or every attraction inside ASPAM. Building shops can also have different hours from the outdoor event.

Getting there: Aomori Station is not Shin-Aomori

The walking route starts at JR Aomori Station. If arriving by Tohoku Shinkansen, change at Shin-Aomori for a train on the Ou Main Line to Aomori, then use the east exit. Allow for the connection, rather than treating the short train ride as the whole transfer.

From the east exit, turn left and continue towards the waterfront, passing beneath Aomori Bay Bridge towards ASPAM’s triangular building. The usual walk is around eight minutes, but snow, ice and luggage can make it slower. The ASPAM access page and surrounding-area map help orient you; prioritise cleared, open paths over a map’s shortest line.

You do not need to rent a car just for this central-city event. Staying near Aomori Station or the city centre makes a walking return straightforward when conditions allow. If you already have a car, arrange parking and your return transport before drinking alcohol.

How long to stay and a manageable evening plan

Visit style Suggested allowance Approach
Tree, stalls and a snack 60–90 minutes Make one circuit, choose food, then return towards the station
Market and fireworks 90–120 minutes or longer Work backwards from the display time and allow for departure
Young children or slower walkers Short visits with breaks Keep the route flexible and leave when cold or tired

Adjust your stay to the weather, your group and the journey home. On a regular fireworks evening, arriving around 18:00 gives time for a first look and food before the display around 19:00. Move that plan one hour earlier on December 11. On a weekday without fireworks, arriving after 16:00 lets you browse and still have dinner near your hotel.

If sightseeing earlier in the day, drop off luggage and shopping first. A light bag leaves your hands free on slippery paths. Travellers returning by Shinkansen should settle luggage collection and the Aomori-to-Shin-Aomori connection before choosing how late to stay.

Winter clothing, families and where to stay

Use a wind-resistant outer layer, adjustable warm layers, gloves, a hat and footwear with good grip. Standing still for fireworks feels different from walking continuously. Keep phones and payment items easy to reach so you do not have to rummage through bags while moving over icy ground.

Snow and slush can make stroller use difficult. Choose according to the day’s conditions and your child’s needs. For wheelchairs, limited mobility or particular facilities, ask the venue about the relevant route and service before travelling; an indoor facility does not automatically describe the outdoor market.

Aomori Station, Shinmachi and the waterfront are sensible areas to compare for a central-city stay. Look at the actual evening walking route, dining options and next morning’s departure, rather than distance alone. Avoid adding a remote excursion that leaves no buffer to get back for fireworks.

Frequently asked questions

When is ASPAM Christmas Market in 2026?

December 11–25, 2026. Weekend and December 24–25 opening is earlier than on ordinary weekdays.

Is admission free?

Yes. Food, drinks, goods and separately charged ASPAM attractions are extra.

Are there fireworks every night?

No. They are scheduled for December 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25. December 11 is around 18:00; the other dates are around 19:00.

What time does it open on December 24 and 25?

Both dates run 11:00–20:30, with last orders at 20:00.

Can I walk there from Shin-Aomori Station?

Use JR Aomori Station as the walking base. Transfer from Shin-Aomori to Aomori, then walk from the east exit.

Should families stay for fireworks?

Only if it suits the children. A tree-and-snack visit is enough, and leaving before the display may be preferable for children sensitive to cold or loud sounds.

Will it operate in snow?

Do not assume every programme will run unchanged. Check same-day notices and be ready to shorten the visit if weather affects the event.

Is it worth a special long-distance trip?

It is strongest as an evening addition to an Aomori or wider Tohoku trip. Compare the time and cost carefully if the market would be your only reason for a long journey.

For a wider seasonal route, compare destinations in the Japan Christmas markets guide before booking intercity travel. Choosing an event already on your route leaves more time for the evening itself.
