For Kobe Christmas markets in 2026, first choose between a mountain garden and a waterfront evening. Nunobiki Herb Gardens works best as a half-day outing with a ropeway ride, gardens, German decorations and lights. TOTTEI is convenient for food and a market stroll after sightseeing around Sannomiya. Meriken Park is the stronger choice when drone performances and harbor views are your priorities.

The three events have different dates, admission arrangements and opening hours. This guide compares their markets and practical visitor experience. For street illuminations, Luminarie and a broader evening route, see our Kobe winter illumination guide.

Kobe Meriken Christmas December 19–25, 2026 Daily 16:00–21:00; free admission Drones, fireworks on selected dates, harbor scenery and a food market

Budget separately for admission, food and shopping. Free entry does not include refreshments or souvenirs. For TOTTEI’s four paid-entry dates, check the official event website for ticket prices and admission arrangements before visiting. Nunobiki uses special Christmas-season pricing, so do not assume a ropeway fare quoted for another season applies.

Choose by your travel dates first

  • November 7–December 3, 2026: Nunobiki is open among these three events
  • December 4–18, 2026: choose Nunobiki or TOTTEI
  • December 19–25, 2026: all three overlap, allowing a choice based on scenery, budget and performances
  • December 26–28, 2026: Nunobiki continues, while the other two have finished

If Christmas Eve or Christmas Day is not essential, flexible travelers can compare ordinary operating days first. For the Meriken fireworks, plan in the opposite order: choose the performance date, then fit dinner and transport around it. Booking a meal before checking the show schedule can create an avoidable clash.

Nunobiki: make the market part of a half-day garden visit

Nunobiki places its market within a mountain garden and European-style architecture. Shopping is only part of the experience: you can ride the ropeway, explore the gardens and enjoy city views. Christmas goods include German wooden and pewter ornaments, nutcrackers and advent calendars. For photography, work gradually from the viewing plaza toward the forest Christmas tree and glasshouse area.

Allow around two to three hours, plus ropeway queues. Paying for the ropeway and garden may offer limited value if you only want a drink and a brief browse. Staying from daylight into the illuminated evening makes better use of the mountain outing.

Evening opening is date-dependent

From November 7 through December 10, 2026, evening opening applies on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. From December 11 through December 28, it applies every day. On ordinary operating days the ropeway runs until 17:15, with the last uphill departure at 16:45. On evening-opening dates it runs until 21:00, with the last uphill departure at 20:15. Market shopping ends at 16:30 normally and 20:00 on evening-opening dates: the overall closing time is not every shop’s closing time.

For both daylight photographs and night views, go up in the afternoon, browse the stalls and identify your return route before the lights come on. An uphill departure at 20:15 leaves little scope for leisurely shopping and dinner. Online tickets simplify ticket purchasing but do not eliminate the boarding queue.

Getting there and returning down the mountain

Allow approximately five minutes on foot from the municipal subway’s Shin-Kobe Station to the ropeway base station, followed by around 10 minutes on the ropeway to the summit. Walking, ticketing and waiting need their own allowance: the 10-minute ride is not the entire journey from Shin-Kobe to the market. Store large suitcases before going up.

Do not improvise a nighttime hiking descent. Hiking gates close after 17:30 and some stair routes are unavailable during evening opening. Strong winds or thunderstorms can suspend the ropeway, so check its operating status before leaving. The official Nunobiki Christmas website and venue map are useful for paths, opening hours and same-day notices.

TOTTEI: a waterfront market after Sannomiya sightseeing

TOTTEI PARK in Shinko-cho combines Christmas food, decorations and harbor scenery. It is straightforward to add to a day that already includes Sannomiya, particularly if you do not want a mountain excursion or have only one evening available. Allow around one to one-and-a-half hours for the market, with extra flexibility for a meal or photography.

Weekend opening begins at 11:00, useful for families who prefer an earlier outing. Weekdays begin at 16:00, so a lunchtime arrival based on the weekend schedule will not work. The limited-edition mug costs ¥1,200 and may sell out. It is a separately sold souvenir, not something to assume is included with admission.

Allow approximately 17 minutes from Hanshin Kobe-Sannomiya, 18 minutes from Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya, 20 minutes from JR Sannomiya and 13 minutes from Port Terminal Station on the Port Liner. For less walking, check the Port Loop bus to Arena-mae, approximately one minute from the venue. These estimates exclude waiting and crowd delays; use the current route and timetable for your day.

TOTTEI has no general visitor parking, so plan to use public transport. Strollers are allowed, but entry can be restricted when crowded and there is no stroller-storage service. Wheelchair users can enter, although busy conditions may make movement difficult. Families do not need to aim for the latest slot: daylight or an earlier visit leaves more energy for the journey back.

Meriken Park: prioritize the drones and harbor setting

The Meriken event centers on drone performances, music and a Christmas waterfront atmosphere, with the food market forming part of that experience. Nunobiki is the better match if shopping for German Christmas crafts is the main goal. Meriken is more appealing if you want a performance, something to eat and a harbor stroll.

Two drone performances a day are planned for December 19–25, 2026, each lasting approximately 10 minutes. Performances are scheduled for 18:00 and 20:00 on December 20–24, and 18:00 and 19:45 on December 25. The first performance on December 19 begins at 17:30; confirm the other performance time for that day with the organizer. Approximately five minutes of fireworks are planned after the first drone show on December 19 and the second show on December 25.

These performances depend on weather and their times can change. Rain or wind exceeding the operating threshold can lead to cancellation. Check the official Meriken Christmas website and its official social-media links on the day before making a special journey for a performance.

We suggest allowing roughly one to two hours for a show and the market. Buy food and find your way before the performance, rather than joining a queue as it starts. Reserving viewing spots is prohibited; follow staff directions. There is no luggage-storage service at the event. Agree on a meeting point if your group splits up for food, and keep pedestrian passages clear.

How to plan one evening without rushing

For mountain views: concentrate on Nunobiki

Arrive at Shin-Kobe in the afternoon, store luggage, then take the ropeway for the market and gardens. On an evening-opening date, stay for the lights and come down for dinner. This avoids chasing a second performance on the waterfront and leaves flexibility for weather and queues. Put shopping earlier in the visit so that stalls do not close while you are photographing the night view.

For the harbor: choose TOTTEI or Meriken, then add dinner

Make one venue the focus, with dinner and a waterfront walk before or after it. Both operate on December 19–25, 2026, but combine them only if your group has enough energy. TOTTEI and Meriken are separate parks with additional walking between them: being on the Kobe waterfront does not make their stalls next door to each other. If your restaurant booking is close to a Meriken performance time, dropping the other market is more comfortable than spending the evening rushing.

For families and older visitors: protect rest and return time

Choose one main venue, a seated meal and a straightforward way back if children become tired. The harbor calls for wind protection; the mountain adds slopes and ropeway queues. Comfortable shoes, a wind-resistant layer and accessible gloves are more useful than dressing too lightly for photographs. Visitors needing step-free access should confirm the day’s routes and facilities with the venue: permission to enter does not establish that the entire outing is barrier-free.

Kobe Christmas market FAQ

Can I visit all three in one day?

You can investigate a combined route during the overlapping dates, but we would not recommend it for a first visit. Nunobiki requires an uphill and downhill journey with possible queues, and the waterfront venues also involve transfers on foot. One main venue, with a second added only if time and energy allow, leaves more room for shopping, dinner and performances.

Which option is cheapest?

Meriken has free admission. TOTTEI is also free except on December 19, 20, 24 and 25, 2026. Set a separate food and souvenir budget to control overall spending. Nunobiki requires the round-trip ropeway and garden admission first, making it better value for people who already want to explore the gardens.

Is anything still open after Christmas Day?

Among these three events, Nunobiki continues until December 28, 2026. TOTTEI and Meriken both finish on December 25. Nunobiki’s later closing date should not be applied to the whole city.

Is it worth going in the rain?

Check event and transport operations first. Strong winds or thunderstorms can suspend Nunobiki’s ropeway, while rain or wind can cancel Meriken’s drones and fireworks. If the performance is your reason for going, read the same-day announcement. Even for a market-only visit, consider outdoor walking and warm clothing.

Are the Christmas markets the same as Kobe Luminarie?

No. Each of the three events has its own dates, venue and organizer. Use our separate Kobe illumination and Luminarie guide for that event, and do not transfer tickets, show times or traffic arrangements between them.
