LUMI Satsuma 2026 works well as an evening outing while staying in Kagoshima city: head to Yoshino Park for winter-sakura lighting, reflections and illuminated paths, then return to the city. The season runs from November 7, 2026 to January 11, 2027, on selected dates. Before planning photographs, match an operating date to your stay and decide how you will get back to your hotel.

There are 28 operating dates. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are included; December 31 is not. A reference to the year-end holiday period does not mean a New Year’s Eve opening. Tickets are not date-specific, but they can only be used when the event operates. If your itinerary allows two possible evenings in Kagoshima, you will have more flexibility around weather. Check the LUMI Satsuma event website before setting out.

Tickets: advance and regular prices

Category Advance, through November 6 Regular, from November 7
General admission ¥1,300 ¥1,500
High-school and university students ¥1,000 ¥1,300
Elementary and junior-high students ¥300 ¥500
Preschool children Free Free

The advance discount depends on when you buy, not on visiting during the first part of the season. Two general-admission adults and two elementary-school children pay ¥3,200 in advance or ¥4,000 at regular prices, a saving of ¥800. This calculation covers entry only, excluding transport, food and paid activities. If travel plans remain uncertain, weigh the refund conditions alongside the discount. Student categories may require identification, so carry a student card or proof of age.

Options include LINE digital tickets, Rakuten Travel and paper tickets at designated outlets; cash ticket machines are also available at the entrance. Save a screenshot of the entry QR code before arrival rather than relying on a fresh login or mobile signal at the gate. Purchases generally cannot be changed, cancelled or refunded, except under the organizer’s rules if the event is cancelled. Re-entry is generally not allowed, so bring your warm layers and children’s essentials with you.

What to see: winter sakura, reflections and Sakurajima light

Winter sakura and the Water Mirror Plaza

The new 2026 winter-sakura area lights the park’s cherry-tree avenue in pink. This is a lighting installation rather than a cherry-blossom forecast, so there is no flowering stage to wait for. Start with a wide view of the avenue, then frame people against the branches instead of filling every picture with bright pink light. At the Water Mirror Plaza, droplet-shaped objects, reflections and mirror-ball light provide a different subject: find the reflection first, then choose a position that leaves the path clear.

Light paths and the observatory

The Snow Path uses lasers and snow-like light effects, while the Cloud Path uses holographic sheets to suggest drifting vapor. The Cycad Nebula combines light and sound, giving you a reason to pause rather than treat every area as a static photo stop. Watch a sequence before filming to understand its changes. At the observatory, Breath of the Earth lets visitors use a control panel to operate lasers from Sakurajima School remotely. Plan around this light interaction rather than assuming the entire volcano will be clearly visible after dark.

Transport: plan the return trip first

Nangoku Kotsu route buses connect Kagoshima city with Yoshino Park, with departures from Kagoshima-Chuo Station and Tenmonkan. Saturday, Sunday/public-holiday and weekday schedules differ, and Kagoshima-Chuo departures use more than one boarding bay. Match the bay to the service you intend to take. December 28, 2026 uses the weekday schedule; December 29–30 use the holiday schedule. An outward timetable should not be taken as evidence of equally frequent buses back after dark.

Paid temporary special buses leave Yoshino Park at 19:30 and 21:00 for Kagoshima-Chuo Station’s west exit via Kagoshima Station and Tenmonkan. Additional temporary route buses depart at 20:00 and 21:00 for December 24–January 3, with different stops; check them against the event’s operating dates. Review the venue access and return-bus information before choosing dinner or a final photo stop, and reach the boarding area early. Drivers should allow for parking and departure queues. The roughly 15-minute access estimate from Route 10 does not include city traffic or guarantee a parking space.

How long to stay: families and couples

A straightforward circuit takes around 45 minutes; allow about one to one-and-a-half hours with photographs and food. Arriving between 18:00 and 19:00 gives a first visit more breathing room than arriving at the 20:30 entry cutoff. If taking the 19:30 return bus, prioritize winter sakura, the Water Mirror Plaza and your favorite light area, and handle dinner separately. If you want the observatory, children’s activities or a relaxed meal, confirm a later return first. Working backward from transport is easier than searching for a ride once everyone is tired.

Food trucks and a children’s area are part of the event. The light-up disc and hula-hoop play area is free; inflatables, illuminated rickshaws, the stamp rally and craft activities include separately charged options. Entry does not cover every experience, so agree with children beforehand whether to choose one paid activity or concentrate on the lights. Strollers and wheelchairs are allowed, but some areas have steps or grass. Admission access does not mean every path is level. Ask staff about the nursing space inside the park management office.

Small planning mistakes to avoid

Kagoshima is in southern Kyushu, but an outdoor evening still calls for a wind-resistant layer and comfortable shoes. Keep enough phone battery for the ticket, photographs and return directions; a power bank is more useful than relying on finding a socket. Light rain normally does not stop the event, while heavy rain, typhoons or unsafe conditions may cause cancellation. Consider wet grass, stroller movement and waiting outside for buses as well as the operating announcement. Outside food is allowed and its waste should be taken home; food-truck payment methods vary, so avoid relying on a single method.

If your trip includes other cities, use our Japan Christmas markets guide to compare options, then fit LUMI Satsuma into a night already spent in Kagoshima. There is little benefit in adding a north-to-south Kyushu transfer just to collect another illumination. A city walk, meal and rest during the day make it easier to keep the evening bus plan than returning from a distant outing at the last minute.
