Is renting a car in Beppu worth it?

A car is most useful for Beppu’s hillside attractions and journeys beyond the city, rather than for moving between JR Beppu Station, Kitahama and Takegawara Onsen. The hells can be reached by bus; adding Myoban, Yufuin, African Safari or Kokonoe makes the flexibility of driving more valuable.

The first practical choice is where to collect it. Toyota Beppu Station and Times Beppu Station are on the west, or Yamanote, side of JR Beppu Station. Kitahama and the coast are east of the tracks. Check the exit before hauling luggage to an office.

Flying into Oita does not mean you must rent immediately. For a late arrival and a first night in town, taking an operating airport bus and collecting in Beppu the next morning can be more comfortable. Protect the return time too: a 17:00 office closure makes a very different day from a 20:00 closure.

For broader preparation, use the Japan rental guide and Kyushu rental and pass guide. This guide concentrates on Beppu’s actual pickup points and nearby driving routes.

Plan Recommendation
Station, Kitahama and Takegawara Usually walk and use local transport
Only the hells Bus is viable; a car may be convenient with children, older passengers or a group
Hells and Myoban A half-day or day rental can fit well
Beppu and Yufuin A full day, allowing for parking and the office deadline
African Safari Useful for the journey; check the rental contract before driving through the animal area
Kokonoe, Kurokawa and Aso Prefer a multi-day route with an overnight
Solo or reluctant driver Compare bus, tour and driver-inclusive options before renting

Beppu rental branches and opening hours

Branch Location Published regular hours Important detail
Toyota Beppu Station About one minute from the west exit 08:00–20:00 Convenient for rail arrivals and a later return
Times Beppu Station About two minutes from the west exit 09:00–17:00 Ordinary rental is separate from its 24-hour car-sharing service
Toyota Beppu 3-31 Shinkomachi, north along Route 10 08:00–19:00 Reserved port transfer listed at 08:00–18:00
Nippon Beppu Kankoukou-mae Shinkomachi, about 13 minutes on foot from Sunflower terminal Mon–Fri 07:30–18:00; Sat–Sun 08:00–19:00 Holiday hours follow the corresponding day of the week; arrange transfer by the previous day
Oita Airport offices Off-airport branches after terminal check-in Varies by company Counter opening and the complete collection process must fit your flight

Confirm special-date changes and your actual booking. Toyota’s official Beppu directory distinguishes the station office at 10-29 Tanoyumachi from the separate Shinkomachi branch. Typing only “Toyota Beppu” into navigation is not precise enough.

Times’ station page lists credit-card payment and restrictions on accepting tall or long vehicles for one-way returns because of garage dimensions. Its car-sharing advertisement does not authorize an ordinary rental to be left at any hour. Choose the car class and return office together.

Station, airport or ferry-port pickup?

JR Beppu Station: a straightforward city-first plan

Arrive by rail, leave luggage at your accommodation and use the first evening for the town and onsen. Collect from the west side the next morning. This avoids paying for a vehicle and hotel parking before either is useful. Compare the Fukuoka–Beppu travel options when arranging the first leg.

Oita Airport: useful for an immediate rural departure

Airport pickup fits an early flight followed by Yufuin, Kunisaki, the safari park or Kokonoe. The airport’s official rental page directs booked customers to the domestic terminal’s first-floor arrivals counters, followed by a transfer to the office for formal procedures. Use the official first-floor map to find them.

The airport currently lists Toyota and Nippon at 08:00–20:00, Nissan and Budget at 08:00–19:00, and Times and ORIX at 09:00–19:00. These are reference hours, not permission to arrive at the terminal at closing. A different supplier may have separate contact instructions.

The airport’s driving guide gives roughly 40 minutes for the Beppu Interchange route. That is not a guaranteed landing-to-hotel journey: add collection, the destination within Beppu and current traffic. For return flights, add inspection and the shuttle before the airline’s required terminal-arrival time.

Beppu port: reserve the transfer, not just the car

Sunflower passengers can use a port-area branch without first travelling to JR Beppu Station. Toyota’s Beppu branch requires a reservation for its 08:00–18:00 port transfer even though the office stays open until 19:00. Its service note warns that availability can be limited at busy times and that customers using web payment cannot apply for the listed transfer service. Confirm eligibility through your booking channel before relying on it.

Nippon’s port branch instructions require contact by the day before. Its pickup is limited to four people at JR Beppu Station and normally one representative at the ferry terminal; ask about larger parties instead of assuming the whole group and all bags can board. Return transfers to the station or Sunflower terminal end 30 minutes before closing. Give the office your ferry details and clarify where everyone else should wait.

Compare total prices, not “per day from”

Rates change with dates, duration, class, supplier, cancellation conditions and return location. Enter the correct licence-issuing jurisdiction, driver age and actual times on the Beppu rental comparison page. A search-page offer does not guarantee availability for a different date.

Item Question to answer
Rental duration Is the charge based on hours, 24-hour periods or another package?
CDW and NOC Which deductibles and loss-of-use charges remain?
Roadside assistance What happens with tyres, keys, battery, towing or wrong fuel?
Child seats and winter tyres Are the actual items confirmed, and what do they cost?
ETC card and tolls Is a card available, and how are tolls settled?
One-way return Does the destination accept the vehicle, and what is the fee?
Fuel and cancellation What are the refuelling rules, cancellation deadline and no-show charge?

A cheap quote at an office closing at 17:00 is unsuitable for a route that brings you back at 18:00. Compare logistics before deciding that the lowest number represents the best value.

CDW, NOC and the limits of “full insurance”

CDW generally addresses specified damage deductibles. NOC is the rental company’s loss-of-use charge when a car cannot be rented because of damage, an accident or another covered interruption. They are different items and may need separate protection.

Toyota’s published insurance terms, for example, distinguish deductible protection from NOC waiver and list ¥20,000 or ¥50,000 NOC according to the return circumstances. Those are that provider’s conditions, not universal Japanese charges.

Read the exclusions for tyres, wheels, glass, underbody damage, keys, incorrect fuel, interior dirt, non-paved or prohibited roads and towing beyond the included limit. Report an accident to the police and rental company, and register every driver. A high-tier package does not override contract breaches. Narrow roads and slopes around Kannawa, Myoban and countryside accommodation are good reasons to consider protection carefully, rather than assuming central Beppu’s roads describe the whole trip.

Driving documents, age and payment

Documents depend on the licence, not your nationality

Bring a passport and the original documents required for your licence-issuing jurisdiction. Many visitors use an authorized booklet-format international driving permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, together with their domestic licence. A 1968 Vienna Convention permit or a privately sold online “international licence” is not a substitute. Licences issued in Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Monaco use the recognized Japanese-translation route with the original licence. A Taiwan-issued IDP does not replace that translation.

Check Toyota’s document checklist before booking, including vehicle categories and proof of entry. Eligibility is limited by document expiry and the applicable period after landing; residents who re-enter after a short absence cannot assume the clock restarts. Toyota asks users of automated immigration gates to obtain the landing stamp or present its specified acceptable evidence, so a phone screenshot is not a universal alternative.

JAF’s translation application is online and accessible from Japan; processing is not an arrival-day service. Arrange an authorized translation before your driving day, using an authorized issuing organization available to your licence jurisdiction. Register every driver and bring each person’s qualifying documents.

Age and payment rules vary by supplier

For example, Nippon Rent-A-Car accepts qualified drivers aged 18 or above, but that does not establish every company’s age or licence-holding requirements. Its online payment generally requires a card in the main driver’s name, and some car classes require a credit card. Check the chosen provider’s payment, debit/cash and vehicle-class conditions rather than assuming the booking platform uses one rule for all cars.

What vehicle size makes sense?

Group Useful starting point Do not overlook
One or two with little luggage Compact or suitable kei car Comfort and performance on your actual route
Two with two large cases Compact with verified boot capacity A model photo does not establish bag dimensions
Three or four with moderate bags Mid-size car or suitable SUV City parking dimensions
Four with four large cases Larger luggage space or minivan Usable boot space with occupied seats
Five to seven people Seven- or eight-seat minivan Third-row seats reduce room for bags
Winter mountain trip Appropriate car with confirmed winter tyres Four-wheel drive does not replace tyre grip or experience

Describe real luggage, such as two large cases and a folded stroller. Child seats also take width on the rear bench. “Or similar” normally allows another model in the class, so request a guaranteed model only where the booking explicitly offers one. For older passengers, door opening and seat height may matter more than the vehicle’s category.

ETC cards and the Kyushu Expressway Pass

For short trips around Beppu and Yufuin, paying actual tolls is often simpler than buying a pass. You may not need an expressway at all for some local stops. A working ETC card is separate from the onboard reader; reserve one when needed and confirm how its usage is charged.

Kyushu Expressway Pass: check both the route and the end date

The official KEP scheme ends on 31 March 2027, with plan-specific application deadlines beginning on 22 March. It is not an option to assume for April 2027 onward. Prices start at ¥6,200 for two days and ¥8,400 for three, then rise by ¥2,200 per extra day to ¥23,800 for ten days, excluding the rental. Eligibility and a designated participating branch are required. Toyota, Budget, ORIX and Nippon are currently marked as not accepting it.

Use the official coverage map to check the actual interchanges. Urban expressways and other excluded roads cost extra. A rented ETC card alone is a payment method, not unlimited travel. For a short local rental, compare actual tolls before changing supplier just to obtain a pass.

For a longer route, place the overnight stays first, then calculate the relevant toll sections. The Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima guides help distinguish city-only days from rural driving days. A long list of cities does not by itself prove that a pass saves money.

The collection checklist

  1. Match the office name, address and station exit or ferry pickup instructions to the voucher.
  2. Confirm every driver and reserve child restraints, ETC, winter tyres and any shuttle.
  3. Bring passports, the appropriate original driving documents and the accepted payment method.
  4. Review protection, fuel, roadside assistance and the return deadline.
  5. Inspect existing damage to the body, wheels, glass and interior with staff.
  6. Photograph the car, fuel gauge and mileage before departure.
  7. Learn indicators, wipers, gear selector, parking brake and navigation while parked.

Do not rush onto a busy road just because the paperwork is finished. The controls may differ from the car you drive at home.

How much time should you allow for return?

As an editorial planning allowance, keep at least an hour for the final approach, fuel, finding the entrance, inspection and settlement; 90 minutes is a more conservative starting point after a busy Yufuin day or in poor weather. This is not a guarantee and does not replace your contracted return time. Add the onward walk or shuttle and the railway, ferry or airline’s own check-in requirements separately.

  • Confirm the fuel type, where to fill and whether a receipt is required.
  • Use the correct branch return entrance, which may differ from a convenient station entrance.
  • Return child seats and equipment and settle ETC usage.
  • Check seats, pockets, boot and the ETC reader for belongings.
  • Confirm the last onward shuttle, especially at port offices.

If late, contact the office before the deadline. An extension needs agreement; do not park outside a closed office and assume the rental is complete. For an early airport flight that cannot fit opening and shuttle hours, consider returning the previous evening.

Driving the Beppu hells: two parking areas, not seven car journeys

The official hells access map separates two areas. Umi, Oniishibozu, Kamado, Oniyama and Shiraike are within walking distance in Kannawa. Chinoike and Tatsumaki are about 3 km away, making a car or bus useful between the clusters.

  1. Park legally at the Kannawa cluster and walk between the five nearby hells, observing any site-specific parking rules.
  2. Return to the car and drive to the Chinoike/Tatsumaki area.
  3. Continue to Myoban or the next destination rather than repeatedly moving between neighbouring car parks.

Each hell has free parking; the official Oita tourism listing gives approximately 615 spaces in total. This is a combined figure across seven sites, not one enormous car park or a promise of space on a holiday. Its listed hours are 08:00–17:00. The Beppu hells guide helps decide whether you want all seven or a shorter selection.

For the linked Klook product, the current option requires a printed voucher to exchange for the physical ticket. Do not assume a phone-only e-ticket will work. Check the selected option’s exchange and date rules before purchasing; sightseeing hells are not pools for bathing.

Klook.com

A half-day rental: hells highlights and Myoban

Part of day Plan Keep it realistic
Opening time Collect near JR Beppu Station 08:00 works only at a branch open then; Times starts at 09:00
Morning Visit selected Kannawa hells, then the second cluster if wanted Walk within the cluster instead of moving the car each time
Lunch Kannawa or Myoban Leave time for queues and any booked bath
Early afternoon Refuel and return Keep the rest of the afternoon for town or onward rail

For children or older passengers, choose highlights rather than trying to finish all seven hells, a long lunch and a bath in a short rental. The car makes transfers easier; it does not remove the time spent visiting.

A full day: Beppu and Yufuin

Collect early from a suitable branch, visit a manageable selection of hells, have lunch in Kannawa or Myoban, then continue to Yufuin. Park once there and walk around Lake Kinrin and Yunotsubo Street. Depart with enough time for weekend traffic, fuel and the Beppu office deadline.

This is a sightseeing combination, not a leisurely full onsen day. A 17:00-closing rental is a poor match for a long Yufuin afternoon. If you want a more relaxed visit, use the Yufuin guide and Yufuin rental comparison to consider an overnight or a different pickup/return pattern.

A family alternative: African Safari

Make the safari park the main half-day outing and combine it with only a few hells or hotel time. Do not schedule all seven hells, the park and a full Yufuin walk together. Check the official own-car safari guidance and your rental contract separately. If animal damage is a concern, park and use the park’s bus subject to availability; the park’s admission policy does not guarantee rental insurance coverage.

Can you visit Beppu without driving?

Yes. The station, Kitahama and Takegawara work well on foot and by local transport, and buses serve Kannawa and the hells. The hells’ official access page links Kamenoi Bus for current routes. Check the timetable for the day rather than assuming frequent departures between every stop.

Solo travellers, people unfamiliar with left-side driving, groups whose drivers want to drink, and visitors avoiding winter mountains need not force a rental. A driver-inclusive trip can also help a family or group control its stops. Confirm hours, passengers, luggage, pickup point and overtime before booking.

For a one-day visit from Fukuoka, an organized tour removes rental paperwork and parking. Review the selected itinerary carefully: current products can offer different combinations of Yufuin, Beppu and other stops, with fixed time at each.

Children and older passengers

Children under six generally need an appropriate restraint. Reserve the seat with the car and check that the group, installed seats, stroller and bags fit together. Never leave a child alone in the vehicle. Summer heat, toilet stops, naps and motion sickness on mountain roads all deserve time in the schedule.

For older passengers, choose an easy seat height and door opening and shorten the walking sections. The hells have slopes and outdoor areas despite their parking and accessible facilities. Wheelchair users should confirm the route and equipment with each attraction and the rental office; a general accessibility symbol is not a guarantee of a wheelchair-adapted vehicle or a completely step-free visit.

Winter tyres and seasonal road checks

Central Beppu’s coastal weather is not a guide to Yufuin, Myoban, Kokonoe, Kurokawa or Aso. Bridges, shaded slopes and early-morning bends can ice over. Specify studless winter tyres in the reservation rather than relying on a seasonal label or asking only on arrival. Four-wheel drive does not create braking grip on ice.

Season Driving considerations
Spring Holiday and blossom-period parking demand
Summer Hot parked cars, thunderstorms, typhoons and fog
Autumn Busy scenic weekends and earlier sunset
Winter Mountain snow/ice and limited winter-equipped stock
Rain at any time Less waiting outside for buses, but poorer driving visibility and outdoor sightseeing remain

Use Oita’s official road-information gateway and current weather/closure notices before departure. If continuing to Aso, check its live crater restrictions: on 9 October 2026, Level 2 excluded entry within roughly 1 km of the crater. For the 11 October 2026 Oita–Kumamoto cycling stage, use the organizer’s traffic information rather than ordinary journey estimates.

Nearby combinations and when to stay overnight

Hells plus Myoban is the simplest short drive. Beppu plus Yufuin fits a full day, with a reduced selection of stops. Beppu plus African Safari suits families but should not become a three-area marathon. Kokonoe and Kurokawa are better as an overnight journey, continuing toward the Aso area only when roads and the return arrangement fit.

Oita city alone may not justify driving: JR reaches the station and central area. Likewise, a city-focused arrival from Fukuoka can be simpler by rail. Keep the rental for the scattered attractions.

Food stops on a Beppu driving day

Klook.com

Kannawa’s jigoku-mushi steam-cooked food fits naturally after the hells, but a popular lunch can take a substantial part of the day. Toriten chicken works as a proper meal before continuing into the hills. Myoban’s pudding and sweets make a break, not a replacement for lunch. Beppu cold noodles can be a good city dinner after the car is returned, avoiding another parking search and keeping any alcohol away from driving.

Check restaurant parking and opening hours rather than assuming every map pin offers a quick roadside stop. Families should choose a realistic lunch before the next mountain leg.

Where to stay with a rental car

Area Good for Parking or transfer consideration
JR Beppu Station Rail arrival and next-morning rental Easy walk to west-side offices; confirm hotel parking if keeping the car
Kitahama Airport-bus access and central/coastal stays Station offices are across on the west side
Kannawa Hells and a slower onsen stay Some approaches are narrow
Myoban or Kankaiji Resort time and family stays Hotel parking and dinner plans matter more
Tourist-port area Ferry arrival or departure Arrange branch transfers in advance

Compare the Beppu accommodation guide. “Parking available” does not tell you whether it is free, reservable, first-come, height-limited or charged again on re-entry. An overnight before your driving day often makes more sense than arriving after a long journey and immediately beginning a rushed loop.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the station’s east exit for an office on the west side.
  • Treating an airport counter as the actual vehicle pickup location.
  • Requesting a ferry shuttle only after disembarking.
  • Confusing Times’ 24-hour car sharing with ordinary rental hours.
  • Moving the car for every neighbouring hell in Kannawa.
  • Ignoring luggage capacity, child-seat stock or winter tyres.
  • Buying KEP without checking supplier, route coverage and the end date.
  • Leaving Yufuin too late for the rental deadline.
  • Leaving valuables visibly in a parked car or packing too many regions into one day.

Beppu car rental FAQ

Where is the easiest first-time pickup?

For a JR arrival, a confirmed west-exit station office is straightforward. Ferry passengers can use a port branch with a prearranged transfer; an early airport arrival heading straight into the countryside may favour airport pickup.

Can I walk in and rent a car?

Ask if necessary, but do not depend on stock for holidays, large vehicles, winter tyres or child seats. A reservation gives you time to check eligibility and the complete price.

Does a hells ticket work on a phone?

Not necessarily. The linked Klook option currently requires a printed voucher for physical-ticket exchange. Follow your selected product’s actual instructions.

Klook.com

Can I return at Oita Airport or another Kyushu city?

Only with a confirmed one-way arrangement for that vehicle and pair of offices. Fees and receiving-branch size restrictions can apply.

Is an ETC card enough for Beppu and Yufuin?

For the toll sections you choose to use, ordinary ETC settlement is often the simplest approach. A card does not make tolls free; a short local route may avoid expressways entirely.

Can I visit Kurokawa and return the same day?

It can create a long mountain-driving day with little time to enjoy the onsen. An overnight route through Yufuin and Kokonoe is usually more comfortable, provided the rental return and roads are confirmed.

What if the weather becomes unsafe?

Shorten or cancel the mountain section, follow road restrictions and contact the company about changes. Weather disruption does not automatically grant free cancellation or an unapproved extension.

A practical first Beppu rental

Stay in town, collect from the correct station exit in the morning, visit a sensible selection of hells and Myoban, and add Yufuin only if the day and return hours allow. Choose a car that fits the actual bags and passengers, compare the full cost and arrange port or airport transfers properly. Use the Beppu guide and Kyushu itinerary guide to rent on the days when driving genuinely improves the trip.
