raveling from Kyoto to Hiroshima is one of the most popular long-distance routes in western Japan. Many travelers visit Hiroshima after Kyoto to see Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and Miyajima’s floating torii gate. The fastest and easiest way to travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima is by Shinkansen. Regular ticket users can take a direct Nozomi train from Kyoto Station to Hiroshima Station, while some JR Pass users may need to use Hikari, Sakura, or a transfer at Shin-Osaka depending on pass rules. If your trip includes Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Himeji, Okayama, or Kobe, the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is also worth comparing. However, this pass has an important rule: it covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, but it does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. This means pass users usually travel from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka by regular JR line or limited express route, then use the pass on the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima. Klook can also be useful after arriving in Hiroshima, especially for attraction passes and guided Hiroshima + Miyajima tours. Useful options include the Klook Pass Hiroshima, Hiroshima & Miyajima with Ferry and Optional Bullet Train, and Peaceful Hiroshima & Miyajima UNESCO 1 Day Bus Tour. Kyoto to Hiroshima by Shinkansen

The Shinkansen is the most convenient way to travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima. Trains depart from Kyoto Station and arrive at Hiroshima Station.

Basic Route

Kyoto Station → Hiroshima Station Some direct Nozomi trains run between Kyoto and Hiroshima. Other routes may require a transfer at Shin-Osaka, especially if you are using certain rail passes or avoiding Nozomi.

Main Shinkansen Train Types

Train Type Route Use Notes
Nozomi Fastest direct route Best for regular ticket users
Mizuho Fast Sanyo/Kyushu service Usually boarded from Shin-Osaka, not Kyoto
Sakura Good pass-friendly Sanyo route Often used from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima
Hikari Useful for Japan Rail Pass users May require transfer
Kodama Slowest Only useful with discounts or special tickets

Best Shinkansen Choice

For regular ticket users, Nozomi is usually the best choice because it is fast and often direct. For Japan Rail Pass users, Nozomi and Mizuho may require an additional special ticket. Travelers who want to avoid that supplement should look for Hikari and Sakura options, often transferring at Shin-Osaka.

Kyoto Station Tips

Kyoto Station is large, so allow enough time to find the Shinkansen gates, buy food or drinks, and board the correct train.
Tip Why It Helps
Arrive early Kyoto Station can be busy
Check train type Nozomi, Hikari, Sakura, and Kodama rules differ
Reserve seats Useful with luggage or during peak seasons
Buy snacks before boarding Good for long-distance trips
Confirm platform Shinkansen platforms are separate from local JR lines

Kyoto to Hiroshima with Japan Rail Pass

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass can be used on many Shinkansen trains, but Nozomi and Mizuho trains require special handling. If you want to use Nozomi or Mizuho, you may need to buy an additional special ticket for JR Pass holders before boarding.

Best JR Pass Route

For many Japan Rail Pass users, the practical route is: Kyoto → Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima Depending on train schedules, you may use Hikari between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, then Sakura or another eligible train between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima.

JR Pass Tips

Tip Details
Check Nozomi rules Nozomi is fastest but may require a supplement
Consider Hikari + Sakura Good alternative for pass users
Reserve seats Recommended on long-distance routes
Allow transfer time Shin-Osaka is easy but still requires platform changes
Check peak periods Trains can be busy during holidays

Is JR Pass Worth It for Kyoto to Hiroshima?

A nationwide JR Pass is usually not worth buying only for Kyoto to Hiroshima. It may make sense if your trip includes several long-distance routes such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Osaka, and return travel. For most Kansai + Hiroshima travelers, a JR West regional pass may be more relevant than a nationwide pass.

Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass for Kyoto to Hiroshima

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is very useful for many travelers combining Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Himeji, Okayama, and Kobe. However, there is one important detail: The pass covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, but it does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. This means you should not board the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka with this pass. Instead, use a covered JR conventional route from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka, then board the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima.

Kyoto to Hiroshima Transport Pass Tips

1. Compare the pass only after fixing your route

Do not buy a pass before deciding whether you will return to Kyoto or Osaka, continue to Fukuoka, visit Miyajima, or add Okayama and Himeji.

2. Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is strongest for round trips

The pass is most useful when you travel from Kansai to Hiroshima and return to Kansai within the pass period.

3. Remember the Kyoto to Shin-Osaka rule

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. Use a covered JR conventional route to Shin-Osaka, then use the Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima.

4. Check Nozomi and Mizuho rules

Some passes allow certain Shinkansen trains, while others restrict Nozomi or Mizuho or require a supplement. Always check the pass rules before boarding.

5. Miyajima ferry can affect pass value

Some JR West passes include the JR West Miyajima Ferry, which is useful if you visit Miyajima.

6. Add Klook only after deciding your main transport

Klook is useful for Hiroshima attractions, tours, and sightseeing passes. For simple Kyoto to Hiroshima transport, the Shinkansen or JR pass decision should come first. For detailed pass comparison, see Hiroshima Transport Pass Guide.
