If your daytime Hiroshima itinerary already includes Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Miyajima or central Hiroshima sightseeing, you do not necessarily need another attraction that consumes half a day after dark. Hiroshima Dreamination (ひろしまドリミネーション) works especially well because its main illuminations are concentrated around central Peace Boulevard, making it easy to add after dinner, shopping or a full day of sightseeing.

The theme for the 2026 edition is おとぎの国, meaning a fairy-tale world. The officially announced event period is December 4, 2026 to January 24, 2027. The usual illumination hours are 17:30–22:30, while lights are expected to begin at around 18:00 on the opening evening because of the opening ceremony.

Official Hiroshima tourism information also explicitly lists the event as free. In practical terms, you do not need to buy a Hiroshima Dreamination admission ticket to view the public-street illuminations around Peace Boulevard. Food, transport, accommodation and other personal expenses are separate.

Is Hiroshima Dreamination worth planning around?

If you are already staying in central Hiroshima, it is well worth adding to an evening. Most travellers, however, do not need to reserve an entire sightseeing day for it.

The most useful way to approach Hiroshima Dreamination is as a winter evening activity before or after dinner. Keep your daytime Hiroshima itinerary intact, then head to Peace Boulevard after dark and choose the A–L display zones you actually want to see rather than treating the event as a mission to complete every installation from one end to the other.

First-time visitors can use our Hiroshima travel guide to organise daytime sightseeing, then leave Dreamination until after sunset. This is particularly sensible in winter, when daylight hours are too valuable to spend waiting around for the illuminations to begin.

If you are only passing through Hiroshima or have a short evening, there is also no need to force the entire event area into your schedule. Choose a few representative zones along Peace Boulevard and you can still experience the main fairy-tale illumination concept without walking the full length of the display area.

Hiroshima Dreamination itself is free. If you need mobile data for maps, restaurants or live transport information during your trip, a Japan data plan can be useful, but you do not need any kind of paid “ticket” for this free street event.

If you plan to visit on December 4, 2026, note that the opening evening does not follow the usual 17:30 start. Because of the opening ceremony, the lights are expected to begin at around 18:00. For the remaining event period, the officially announced standard illumination hours are 17:30–22:30.

How to reach the Peace Boulevard main venue

One access route listed by official Hiroshima tourism information is to take a streetcar to Fukuro-machi tram stop, then walk approximately two minutes to the Peace Boulevard area.

That “about two minutes” should be understood as guidance for reaching the main Peace Boulevard event area. It does not mean every A–L display zone is within a two-minute walk of Fukuro-machi. Dreamination extends along both sides of Peace Boulevard, so the distance you actually walk depends on which zones you plan to visit.

The most practical approach is therefore not to memorise one rigid route before arrival. Decide which two or three main displays you want to see, then use your phone map together with the official A–L zone schematic to work out which direction to walk once you reach the boulevard.

For broader city transport planning before or after the illuminations, see our Hiroshima transportation guide.

Understand the difference between the main venue and additional illumination locations

The main Hiroshima Dreamination display area is the green space along both the north and south sides of Peace Boulevard. For 2026, the planned main area extends roughly from Shirakamisha-mae to the Tanakamachi intersection.

Official information also lists a number of additional planned illumination locations, including:

  • Namiki-dori, Kinzagai, Chuo-dori, Hondori and Nakanotana shopping streets
  • Alice Garden
  • Higashi-Shintenchi public plaza
  • The Kyobashi River open-café area
  • Motomachi Cred
  • Hakushima Q Garden
  • Hilton Hiroshima
  • Hiroshima Gate Park
  • Hiroshima Stadium Park
  • Facilities around Hiroshima Station

Do not interpret these locations as one continuous illuminated walking trail. Hiroshima Station and Peace Boulevard, in particular, are not simply different sections of one compact pedestrian route. If you only have one evening, make the Peace Boulevard A–L main zones your priority, then treat any other illumination locations as optional additions only when they naturally fit your hotel, dinner or daytime route.

How to use the official 2026 A–L zone map

The most useful purpose of this map is not to help you “complete” zones A through L. It is to help you choose which displays are worth prioritising for your own evening.

What you want to see Zones to consider Best for
Fairy-tale castle Zone B: White Palace First-time visitors looking for a strongly themed centrepiece
Interactive illumination Zone J: Fortune Rabbit / Miracle Carrot Families, couples and visitors who prefer interactive displays
Forest scenery and large illuminated trees Zones including A, F, G and L with Starry Forest / Shining Star-related displays Visitors who prefer larger night scenes and photography
Relaxed after-dinner walk Choose two or three zones closest to where you are that evening Visitors who do not want to spend the whole night chasing displays

If your time is limited, a useful rule is to choose one characterful or themed installation plus one larger illuminated landscape. For example, combine White Palace with Shining Tree, or Fortune Rabbit with Starry Forest. This gives you more visual variety without forcing you to backtrack just to tick all twelve zones off the map.

2026 highlight: Zone B White Palace

White Palace in Zone B is one of the 2026 installations that most directly fits the “Fairy-Tale World” theme, using the image of a white castle as its central visual concept.

If this is your first Hiroshima Dreamination and you want something that immediately feels more thematic than ordinary illuminated street trees, Zone B is a sensible early stop. It also works well as one of the main photography points for the evening before you continue to a contrasting forest or tree-based zone.

2026 highlight: Zone J Fortune Rabbit / Miracle Carrot

Fortune Rabbit / Miracle Carrot in Zone J is one of the more interactive 2026 attractions.

According to the organiser’s introduction, the rabbit changes colour when touched. If you are travelling with children, or simply want something more participatory than a night of static displays, Zone J provides a different kind of experience from the purely photographic installations.

Follow the instructions provided at the installation when you arrive. There is no separate reservation or paid Hiroshima Dreamination ticket required for this display.

2026 highlight: Starry Forest, Shining Star and the new large Shining Tree

Zones including A, F, G and L feature Starry Forest / Shining Star-related themes built around stars, illuminated woodland imagery and larger-scale light scenery. The 2026 edition also introduces a new large Shining Tree.

If you prefer broader night views rather than stopping for every small installation, choose one or two of these larger areas as priorities. A large illuminated tree or forest-themed section also works well as a visual finale later in the evening.

There is no need to treat Shining Tree as a timed performance that you must rush to catch. Based on the announced information, it is most accurately understood as a new large illumination installation for the 2026 event.

If you only have one evening, which route should you choose?

Your best route depends on where you are coming from that evening and where you need to end up afterwards. There is no reason every visitor should automatically walk from Zone A to Zone L.

Option 1: First visit, prioritise the main highlights

Start by making Zone B White Palace a priority, then choose one Starry Forest or Shining Tree-related area. If you still have enough time and energy, add Zone J Fortune Rabbit. This is a straightforward plan for visitors who want the key themes without spending the evening studying every part of the map.

Option 2: Families or visitors who prefer interactive displays

Make Zone J Fortune Rabbit / Miracle Carrot one of your must-see stops, then pair it with a large castle, tree or forest installation. With children, there is usually little benefit in turning the evening into a twelve-zone checklist. Two or three genuinely different displays will often be more enjoyable than covering the entire boulevard for completeness.

Option 3: Easy walk after dinner

If the main goal is simply a pleasant winter walk, enter Peace Boulevard from whichever side best suits your restaurant or hotel, then visit a few convenient nearby zones. Once you have seen enough, leave. You do not need to cross back and forth across the entire event area just to finish the map.

That flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of Hiroshima Dreamination as a free urban illumination event. You are not tied to a paid admission slot, and there is no pressure to stay for hours just because you bought an expensive event ticket.

Should you stay in central Hiroshima or near Hiroshima Station?

You do not need to choose your hotel solely for Hiroshima Dreamination. However, if you are deciding between central Hiroshima and the station area, the illumination can be one useful factor.

Stay in central Hiroshima for an easier evening of lights, dinner and shopping

If Hiroshima Dreamination is an important evening activity on your trip, staying around Peace Boulevard, Hondori, Kamiyacho or nearby central districts makes it easier to combine dinner, shopping and the illuminations without adding an extra journey at the end of the night.

Once you feel you have seen enough, you can simply finish the evening and return to your hotel instead of treating the trip back to Hiroshima Station as the final piece of the itinerary.

For hotel-area comparisons, see our where to stay in Hiroshima guide, then choose according to both your daytime sightseeing plans and your transport needs the following morning.

Stay near Hiroshima Station for an easier early departure

If you are taking an early Shinkansen the next morning, leaving Hiroshima, or using Hiroshima Station as the main transport hub for the rest of your trip, a station-area hotel remains a perfectly sensible choice.

Just remember that the “facilities around Hiroshima Station” listed among the planned illumination locations are additional participating locations. That does not mean the main Peace Boulevard A–L displays are beside Hiroshima Station. If the official 2026 main installations are your priority, treat Peace Boulevard as the actual evening destination and plan your return to the station area afterwards.

Should you eat dinner before or after seeing the lights?

Both approaches work, but in winter, eating first and seeing the lights afterwards is often more comfortable for many travellers.

If you get cold easily, are travelling with children or prefer an early dinner: eat first, then use Dreamination as an after-dinner walk. If you become tired, too cold or simply feel that you have seen enough, you can head directly back to the hotel without rearranging the rest of the evening.

If you want to see the lights soon after they come on: start with part of the event after 17:30, then have dinner in central Hiroshima. If you still have energy afterwards, you can decide whether another zone is worth adding.

Do not assume that the winter atmosphere means Hiroshima Dreamination will operate as a fully confirmed large Christmas market. The organisers have published information for food-truck operator applications, but an application or recruitment notice is not the same thing as a confirmed vendor list. Plan your main meal around normal central Hiroshima restaurants rather than depending entirely on unconfirmed on-site food options.

Winter evening preparation: warmth, road crossings and mobile data

The event runs through December and January, and illumination viewing involves more stopping, waiting and standing still for photographs than an ordinary daytime sightseeing route. The cold can therefore feel more noticeable than when you are continuously walking. Wear layers that are easy to adjust and choose outerwear suitable for spending time outside after dark.

Dreamination takes place across real city streets and roadside green spaces rather than inside a fully enclosed theme park. When moving to another zone or crossing to the opposite side of the boulevard, use proper pedestrian crossings and follow traffic signals. Do not cross directly through a traffic lane just because the next illuminated display appears close on the other side.

Mobile data can also be useful, not for entering the event, but for checking your position, finding the next zone, looking up dinner options and confirming transport back to your hotel. If you already have a working Japan SIM, roaming plan or another data connection, there is no reason to buy anything additional specifically for Dreamination.

The linked product is a Japan data-only eSIM and is not a Hiroshima Dreamination ticket.

The linked Klook Japan eSIM product is intended for mobile data rather than ordinary voice calls or SMS. Before purchasing, check that your device supports eSIM and review the product page carefully for current activation requirements, hotspot or tethering restrictions, device limitations, validity choices, cancellation conditions and any other usage rules that matter to your trip. Product packages and prices can change, so do not assume that a particular data allowance, duration or price seen previously will still be available when you book.

Hiroshima Dreamination FAQ

When does Hiroshima Dreamination 2026 start?

The officially announced event period is December 4, 2026 to January 24, 2027.

What time are the Hiroshima Dreamination lights switched on?

The usual illumination hours are 17:30–22:30. On the opening evening, December 4, 2026, the lights are expected to begin at approximately 18:00 because of the opening ceremony.

Is Hiroshima Dreamination free?

Yes. Official Hiroshima tourism information lists the event as free, so you do not need a paid Dreamination admission ticket to see the public-street illuminations. Transport, meals, accommodation and other personal expenses are separate.

What is a convenient way to reach Peace Boulevard?

One access option listed by official tourism information is to take a streetcar to Fukuro-machi tram stop, then walk approximately two minutes to the Peace Boulevard area. This is guidance for reaching the main event area; it does not mean that every A–L zone is two minutes from Fukuro-machi.

Is Hiroshima Station the main Hiroshima Dreamination venue?

No. The principal display area is the green space along both sides of Peace Boulevard, roughly between the Shirakamisha-mae area and the Tanakamachi intersection. Facilities around Hiroshima Station are among the additional planned illumination locations.

Do I need to visit all twelve A–L zones?

No. First-time visitors can prioritise displays such as Zone B White Palace, Zone J Fortune Rabbit / Miracle Carrot and one of the Starry Forest or Shining Tree-related areas. Choosing two or three displays with different styles is often more practical than forcing yourself to walk the entire boulevard.

Will there be a Christmas market at Hiroshima Dreamination in 2026?

Do not treat the event as though a complete Christmas-market vendor line-up has already been confirmed. Food-truck operator recruitment information has been published, but that is not the same as a final vendor list. For dinner, it is safer to plan around established restaurants in central Hiroshima.

Can I use the official A–L map as a transport or accessibility map?

No. The official 2026 A–L map is primarily a display-location schematic. It is useful for choosing zones such as White Palace, Fortune Rabbit and Starry Forest, but it is not a detailed streetcar-transfer map, entrance map or accessible-route guide.

What is the most practical way to plan Hiroshima Dreamination?

If Hiroshima is already part of your winter itinerary, the strength of Dreamination is not that it requires a separate full sightseeing day. It is that it can turn the end of an ordinary Hiroshima sightseeing day into a complete winter evening with very little extra planning.

Spend the daytime exploring Hiroshima as usual, then head to Peace Boulevard before or after dinner. On a first visit, White Palace is an easy thematic priority, followed by Shining Tree or Starry Forest for a contrasting larger illumination scene. If you are travelling with children or want an interactive stop, add Fortune Rabbit. Once you feel satisfied, finish the evening rather than backtracking simply to say that you completed all twelve zones.

The announced event runs from December 4, 2026 through January 24, 2027, so Hiroshima Christmas lights are not limited to the days immediately around Christmas. Visitors arriving in late December, over the New Year period or during January are still within the officially announced Hiroshima Dreamination event dates.

If you want one simple planning rule, use this: if you stay in central Hiroshima, treat Dreamination as a free after-dinner walk; if you stay near Hiroshima Station, still travel to Peace Boulevard for the core A–L displays, then decide when to return according to your transport plans for the following day. You do not need an event ticket, and you do not need to visit every additional illumination location across the city.
