How to Plan Rusutsu Ski Resort in 2026
Rusutsu Resort is spread across three main ski areas: West Mt., East Mt. and Mt. Isola. For a first visit, the most useful question is not how to cover all three mountains, but which area fits your ability, lesson plans and transport schedule.
Beginners and travellers visiting from Sapporo for the day should prioritise an easy meeting point, equipment arrangements and suitable beginner terrain. Skiers who can already control speed and link turns comfortably can make better use of the larger East and Isola sectors.
This guide focuses on choosing the right mountain area, 2026–27 lift tickets, official trail maps, lessons and transport. It does not include a hotel recommendation list.
For a first ski day, compare the Rusutsu private lesson dates before choosing your mountain route. This supplier offers Chinese or English instruction and recommends ages 5–55. Check equipment rental, lift access and actual teaching time in the selected option.
West Mt., East Mt. or Mt. Isola: Which Area Should You Ski?

Find the West base and Family Course on the right, East in the centre and Isola on the left. Choose your starting area around the lesson meeting point before planning a cross-mountain route. Use this image for relative positions and check the official live status for the day’s operating trails and lifts.
West Mt. is the most straightforward starting area for many first-time visitors because it sits close to the resort’s main facilities. If you need to sort out equipment, meet an instructor or spend your first session getting comfortable on snow, starting here can simplify the day.
The official course information lists Family Course on West Mt. at 650 metres long, with an average gradient of 10 degrees and a maximum of 12 degrees. It is a useful example of the gentler terrain available, although beginners should not assume every run on West Mt. has the same difficulty.
East Mt. connects visitors towards a larger skiing area. One beginner-oriented example is East Easy, a 750-metre course with an average gradient of 7 degrees and a maximum of 8 degrees. However, the presence of an easy run does not make the entire mountain beginner terrain, so check your onward route before moving farther across the resort.
Mt. Isola makes more sense once you are comfortable controlling speed and direction and want to explore a wider range of terrain. A complete beginner does not need to rush across all three mountains on the first day simply to say they have covered the whole resort.
Trail and lift operations can change with snow, wind and operating conditions. Use the official Rusutsu Trail Map and Rusutsu Maps page for the latest official layout, and check the resort’s live lift status before setting out. It is better to bookmark the official map than rely on an old downloaded image or a third-party recreation.
Rusutsu Lift Pass Prices for the 2026–27 Season
The regular 2026–27 lift ticket season runs from 19 December 2026 to 14 March 2027. The following prices are for adults aged 19–64. Check the official Rusutsu Winter Lift Tickets page before purchasing in case operating conditions or sales arrangements change.
| Ticket | Ticket counter | Online | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Ticket | JPY 16,700 | JPY 13,200 | A full ski day with flexibility to move between areas |
| 5 Hour Ticket | JPY 14,500 | JPY 11,600 | A shorter ski day or a later start |
| 25 Hour Ticket | JPY 39,000 | JPY 36,000 | Multiple ski days where you want to use time in hourly units |
The 5 Hour Ticket runs continuously from the first time you pass through the IC gate. You cannot pause it and use the remaining hours on another day.
The 25 Hour Ticket works differently. Time is deducted in one-hour units and can be used across multiple days during the season. Each ticket is for one person only and cannot be shared. Remaining time for the 2026–27 season expires on 31 March 2027.
For a beginner spending a significant part of the first day in a lesson, automatically buying the longest ticket is not always necessary. Experienced skiers staying for several days should instead estimate how many hours they realistically expect to ski and compare that with the 25-hour option.
Early Season and Spring Lift Tickets
Early Season 1 is scheduled for 28 November to 11 December 2026, with an adult one-day counter price of JPY 7,900. Early Season 2 runs from 12 to 18 December 2026, with an adult one-day ticket priced at JPY 10,500.
The spring season runs from 15 to 31 March 2027, when the adult one-day ticket is JPY 10,500.
The resort currently states that online sales for the applicable regular-season tickets begin on 19 December 2026. Do not assume that every early-season ticket is already available online simply because 2026–27 prices have been published.
Night Skiing: Check the Ticket Conditions Separately
Night skiing for 2026–27 is scheduled from around mid-December 2026 until 30 March 2027, with operating hours from 16:00 to 20:00 and the final lift ride at 19:45.
Opening dates and operations remain subject to snow, weather and lift conditions. Check the ticket description for the date you plan to ski rather than assuming night skiing is automatically included with every daytime lift pass.
Sapporo to Rusutsu: The Winter Shuttle Is No Longer Free
This is one of the most important transport changes for the 2026–27 season. Rusutsu announced on 17 September 2026 that its winter shuttle between Sapporo and Rusutsu Resort will become a paid service from 28 November 2026.
As of 30 September 2026, the resort has not yet published the winter fare and full reservation details. Older pages referring to the 2025–26 service as free should therefore not be used to plan the new season. The free summer shuttle operating until 18 October 2026 is a separate seasonal service.
Check the official Sapporo shuttle announcement before booking a Sapporo day trip.
A day trip can work well for someone who already skis confidently and can organise equipment and transport in advance. For a complete beginner, lesson check-in, changing, equipment fitting and a fixed return bus can noticeably reduce actual ski time.
New Chitose Airport to Rusutsu: Big Runs Bus
The official Big Runs airport bus is scheduled to operate from 28 November 2026 to 30 March 2027, although some services begin only from 19 December. Reservations for the 2026–27 season are expected to open around late October.
The resort states that reservations must be completed by 24:00 at least seven days before travel. Check the latest timetable and booking arrangements on the official New Chitose Airport–Rusutsu bus page.
When connecting from a flight, Rusutsu recommends allowing at least:
- 45 minutes from a domestic flight arrival to a domestic-terminal bus departure.
- 90 minutes from an international arrival to an international-terminal bus departure.
- 120 minutes from an international arrival when transferring to the domestic-terminal bus stop.
These are minimum connection allowances between your flight and bus, not the bus journey time to Rusutsu.
For the final applicable departures, the official guidance states that domestic flights should arrive by 16:15 and international flights by 15:20. If your flight lands later, do not assume there will still be a Rusutsu shuttle. Confirm alternative transport in advance or consider spending the first night around the airport or in Sapporo.
Should Beginners Book a Ski Lesson?
If you have never skied or snowboarded, or you are not yet confident stopping and turning, a lesson on the first day can make the rest of the trip easier to organise.
Rusutsu’s official International Ski School expects 2026–27 reservations to open in early October 2026. Official private lessons are available from age four. Check the current lesson language, meeting arrangements and availability on the official International Ski Lessons page.
Do not assume a lesson automatically includes equipment rental or a lift ticket. Treat lessons, rentals and lift access as separate items unless the selected package specifically says otherwise.
Klook also lists a private Rusutsu ski and snowboard lesson product offering English and Chinese instruction, meeting at a designated location and a package displaying a six-hour total duration with photography (not necessarily six continuous hours of teaching). The supplier recommends the product for participants aged 5–55; this is separate from the official ski school’s age policy.
Availability for every date in the 2026–27 season has not been confirmed, so use the booking page to compare available dates, teaching language and exactly what each option includes. In particular, check whether rental equipment and lift tickets are included rather than assuming they are part of the lesson.
Sapporo Day Trip or Stay Overnight in Rusutsu?
A Sapporo day trip is easier to justify if you already have basic skiing ability, can arrange your equipment efficiently and are comfortable working around fixed bus times. For experienced skiers who mainly want a concentrated day on the mountain, it can be practical once the 2026–27 Sapporo shuttle timetable and fare are confirmed.
Staying at least one night makes more sense if you are a beginner taking lessons, want to ski East or Isola without rushing, or plan to ski on consecutive days. It also removes the need to keep checking the time for a fixed afternoon or evening bus back to Sapporo.
Rusutsu Ski Resort FAQ
Q: Which part of Rusutsu is best for a first-time skier?
A: Choose your starting area around your lesson meeting point, rental arrangements and suitable beginner terrain rather than trying to cover all three mountains. West Mt.’s Family Course and East Mt.’s East Easy are useful examples of gentler runs, but always confirm the day’s trail and lift status.
Q: Is the Sapporo to Rusutsu shuttle still free in 2026–27?
A: No assumption of free winter transport should be made. Rusutsu has announced that the winter Sapporo shuttle becomes a paid service from 28 November 2026. Fare and detailed reservation information had not yet been published as of 30 September 2026.
Q: Should I buy a 5-hour ticket or a one-day ticket?
A: A 5-hour ticket can suit a genuine half-day or late start, but the five hours run continuously from first gate entry. If lessons, long breaks or a possible full day are part of your plan, compare the total schedule before purchasing.
Q: Can two people share a 25-hour lift ticket?
A: No. Each ticket is issued for one user. Its advantage is that the balance is deducted in one-hour units and can be spread across multiple ski days during the same season.
Q: Do I need to download the Rusutsu trail map before travelling?
A: It is better to bookmark the official Trail Map and Maps pages. Routes, lift operations and open terrain can change, so the resort’s current online information is more useful than an old saved map or an unofficial recreation.
