How to get from Fukuoka to Itoshima: choose your destination first

For central Itoshima, take the subway/JR through train to Chikuzen-Maebaru. For Sakurai Futamigaura’s white torii gate and Married Couple Rocks, the direct West Coast Liner from Hakata or Tenjin is the simplest public-transport option. For a day combining the coast with Shiraito Falls or Raizan Sennyoji Temple, a rental car or a well-chosen day tour saves several awkward transfers.

The important distinction is between reaching an Itoshima train station and reaching the sights. Futamigaura, Nogita, Keya, Shiraito Falls and Raizan are spread across the peninsula and the mountains. None is a short walk from Chikuzen-Maebaru Station, and there is no single sightseeing loop that runs frequently between all of them.

Two changes matter when reading older guides. The Futamigaura–Meoto Iwa-mae bus stop closed on 4 April 2026; use Futamigaura–Tsuki to Taiyo Itoshima Sabo-mae or Futamigaura–PALMBEACH-mae instead. Showa Bus’s new fares took effect on 1 October 2026: the West Coast Liner between Hakata/Tenjin and these Futamigaura stops costs ¥1,400 each way. Itoshima community buses remain ¥200 per adult ride.

For planning, keep the Itoshima Tourism Association access guide, Showa Bus timetable index and Itoshima City bus information handy. The direct coastal bus is a practical choice for first-time visitors as long as the return journey is planned before departure.

Which route gets you closest to your Itoshima destination?

Destination Practical route Where to get off Final stretch / key point
Central Chikuzen-Maebaru Subway Airport Line / JR Chikuhi Line Chikuzen-Maebaru Station Walk around the town centre; no car needed
Futamigaura white torii and Married Couple Rocks West Coast Liner from Hakata/Tenjin 二見ヶ浦・月と太陽糸島茶房前 About 4–5 minutes on foot; fewest transfers
Futamigaura by rail + bus Train to Kyudai-Gakkentoshi, then Nishinoura Line Same Futamigaura stop Useful when the direct bus times do not suit
Sakurai Shrine Train + Nogita–Futamigaura Line 大口・櫻井神社西口 About 10–12 minutes on foot; this is not the nearest stop for the rocks
Nogita coast Train + Nogita–Futamigaura Line 野北 (Nogita) Allow additional walking to your particular café or beach
Keya no Oto Park / “Totoro Forest” Train + Keya Line 芥屋購買店 (Keya Kobaisho) About 8 minutes on foot
Keya sightseeing boat Train + Keya Line 芥屋 (Keya) About 10 minutes to the boarding point; check sea conditions
Shiraito Falls Train + Shiraito Line 白糸 (Shiraito) About 30 minutes uphill on foot after the bus
Raizan Sennyoji Temple Train + Raizan Line / booked on-demand bus 雷山観音前 (Raizan Kannon-mae) About 7 minutes on foot; weekday daytime travel requires a reservation
Futamigaura + Nogita + Keya + mountain sights Rental car or day tour Each attraction’s parking / drop-off point A much more workable choice for several scattered stops

Futamigaura is on the northeastern coast, Keya is farther west, and Shiraito Falls and Raizan are inland to the south. With one day and public transport, pick one area or a coastal route whose connections actually work. Visiting every highlight should not be the starting assumption.

Use the current official Itoshima bus map

Open the official detailed Itoshima bus map (PDF, 4 April 2026) and locate Chikuzen-Maebaru, Kyudai-Gakkentoshi, Futamigaura and Keya before choosing a bus. The Keya Line connects Chikuzen-Maebaru with Keya; the Nishinoura Line approaches Futamigaura from Kyudai-Gakkentoshi; the Nogita–Futamigaura Line starts at Chikuzen-Maebaru. The map also marks on-demand service areas near the mountains.

Zoom into the original PDF on your phone. A route map shows where a line goes, not how frequently it runs, so use it alongside the dated timetable. Older maps that still show 二見ヶ浦・夫婦岩前 are no longer reliable for choosing a Futamigaura stop.

Fukuoka to Itoshima: time and cost comparison

Option Typical journey Adult cost Best use Main limitation
Subway / JR train Tenjin–Chikuzen-Maebaru about 35–40 min; Hakata about 40–45 min ¥640 from Tenjin or Hakata; ¥680 from Fukuoka Airport Central Itoshima and transfers to local buses Rail does not reach the main coastal sights
West Coast Liner Tenjin–Futamigaura about 50–60 min; Hakata about 65–75 min ¥1,400 one way; compare ¥2,000 highway-bus day pass Futamigaura and nearby seaside cafés Road traffic and limited seats; not a local coastal shuttle
Ito-Shima-go highway bus Roughly 40–70 min for nearer destinations; check the selected stop From Hakata/Tenjin: Maebaru ¥700, Kafuri ¥830, Nogita ¥1,100, Ito depot ¥1,500 Stays and destinations along its route Not a sightseeing circuit
Train + community bus Allow roughly 60–120 min overall, plus waits Train fare + ¥200 per community-bus ride Keya, Nogita and carefully planned mountain trips Infrequent buses; Raizan weekday daytime reservations
Rental car About 40–60 min from central Fukuoka to parts of Itoshima in light traffic Rental, fuel, tolls and parking Several coastal and inland attractions Driving eligibility, parking and congestion
Taxi Depends on pickup and destination Meter or a quoted charter fare One difficult station-to-sight transfer Return pickup needs planning
Guided day tour A full day; duration depends on the product Depends on date and selected package Multiple sights without driving Fixed meeting point, route and time at stops

Driving and bus times are planning estimates, not guarantees. They vary with the exact stop, route, weekend traffic and season. Railway fares above are the ordinary adult fares in the Fukuoka Subway/JR fare chart.

By train: Fukuoka Airport, Hakata or Tenjin to Chikuzen-Maebaru

The Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line connects with the JR Chikuhi Line at Meinohama. A through train lets you stay on board all the way to Chikuzen-Maebaru, but a subway train terminating at Meinohama requires a change there. At Hakata, use the subway Airport Line platforms, not the main JR concourse or the Shinkansen platforms.

Starting station Typical through-train time Adult one-way fare Useful for
Fukuoka Airport About 45–50 minutes ¥680 Going directly to an Itoshima stay after arrival
Hakata About 40–45 minutes ¥640 Hakata hotels or a Shinkansen arrival
Tenjin About 35–40 minutes ¥640 Stays around Tenjin, Nakasu or western Fukuoka

From Fukuoka Airport

Fukuoka Airport Station → Subway Airport Line / JR Chikuhi Line through service → Chikuzen-Maebaru Station. The subway station is at the domestic terminal. International arrivals must first take the free inter-terminal shuttle, so the train time above does not include immigration, baggage collection or the terminal transfer. See our Fukuoka Airport transport guide and the airport’s inter-terminal shuttle information.

Check the train’s destination before boarding

Useful westbound destinations include Chikuzen-Maebaru (筑前前原), Chikuzen-Fukae (筑前深江), Karatsu (唐津) and Nishi-Karatsu (西唐津). Check that your particular service continues beyond Meinohama. If it terminates at Meinohama, change to the next suitable JR Chikuhi Line train; the route still works, but it is not a one-seat journey.

Which station should you use?

Station Why you might choose it
Chikuzen-Maebaru Main interchange for Keya, Nogita, Futamigaura and mountain-area buses
Kyudai-Gakkentoshi Nishinoura Line buses towards Futamigaura
Imajuku Local access in western Fukuoka; check the precise onward bus
Hatae / Itoshima-Kokomae Neighbourhood accommodation or a specific local destination
Chikuzen-Fukae The Nijo/Fukae area farther west
Meinohama The subway/JR boundary, and a change point if your train ends here

At Chikuzen-Maebaru, the north side is the usual starting point for Keya and the northern coast; the south side is used for Shiraito and Raizan routes. Match the boarding location to the timetable. Do not plan a tight connection while also looking for luggage storage. Check departures using the JR Kyushu Chikuzen-Maebaru timetable.

IC cards and rail passes

Suica, ICOCA, SUGOCA, Hayakaken and other interoperable transport IC cards can be used for the subway/JR journey to Chikuzen-Maebaru. Tap in and out with the same card. A Fukuoka Subway one-day ticket does not cover the JR section west of Meinohama, even when you remain on the same through train. Budget separately for that part of the journey.

A Tourist City Pass is also limited to its published coverage. Do not assume it covers all Itoshima buses or the whole JR journey. For a straightforward Itoshima day trip, a normal rail fare plus the appropriate bus fare is often easier than fitting the trip around a city pass. The following booking pages are in Traditional Chinese.

West Coast Liner: the direct bus to Futamigaura

For the white torii gate, Married Couple Rocks and nearby cafés, the West Coast Liner avoids a train-to-bus transfer. Its broad route is Hakata Bus Terminal → Gionmachi → Gofukumachi → Nakasu → Tenjin → Imazu → Miyanoura → Nishinoura → Futamigaura → Ito depot. Check the official West Coast Liner timetable for your boarding stop and direction; Tenjin 4-chome and Tenjin 3-chome are directional stops, not interchangeable boarding locations.

Boarding area Time to Futamigaura Adult one-way fare
Hakata Bus Terminal About 65–75 minutes ¥1,400
Tenjin About 50–60 minutes ¥1,400

From 1 October 2026, the fare is ¥1,400. A same-day return bought separately is ¥2,800, so the ¥2,000 highway-bus version of the Itoshima day pass is worth considering even if Futamigaura is your only stop. You can compare your boarding stop in the West Coast Liner fare table.

Which Futamigaura stop should you use?

  • 二見ヶ浦・月と太陽糸島茶房前: Futamigaura–Tsuki to Taiyo Itoshima Sabo-mae, about 4–5 minutes on foot from the Married Couple Rocks
  • 二見ヶ浦・PALMBEACH前: Futamigaura–PALMBEACH-mae, useful for the Palm Beach dining area and a coastal walk
  • 大口・櫻井神社西口: Oguchi–Sakurai Jinja Nishiguchi, about 10–12 minutes on foot from Sakurai Shrine; do not choose it as the nearest stop for the seaside rocks

The former 二見ヶ浦・夫婦岩前 (Futamigaura–Meoto Iwa-mae) stop was abolished on 4 April 2026. The operator’s stop-change notice confirms the change across the West Coast Liner, Nishinoura, Sunset and Nogita–Futamigaura routes.

Reservations, seats and local travel restrictions

The West Coast Liner does not take seat reservations. If it is full, you may have to wait for another service. Arrive early on weekends, holidays and busy beach days, and leave a generous buffer before a flight or Shinkansen connection. Do not assume you can stay for sunset and then find a convenient bus back.

This is a highway service with boarding and alighting restrictions. It cannot be used as a hop-on/hop-off shuttle between the coastal stops from Imazu towards Futamigaura and Ito depot. Use a suitable local bus for those journeys. It is an especially good fit for a simple Futamigaura outing; it is not a direct route to Keya, Shiraito Falls or Raizan.

Train + Nishinoura Line: another way to reach Futamigaura

Take a subway/JR train to Kyudai-Gakkentoshi (九大学研都市), then change to the Showa Bus Nishinoura Line for Futamigaura. Get off at 二見ヶ浦・月と太陽糸島茶房前 and walk to the torii and rocks, or use PALMBEACH-mae for the dining area.

The train gives you more departure choices from central Fukuoka, but the connecting bus is still a timetabled local service. Check that your selected departure reaches Futamigaura rather than assuming every Nishinoura bus does. Use the Nishinoura Line and Itoshima Sunset Line timetable and the current route-based fare table. This line is not a flat ¥200 community bus.

Chikuzen-Maebaru to Futamigaura: the Nogita–Futamigaura Line

You can also reach Futamigaura from Chikuzen-Maebaru’s north side on the Nogita–Futamigaura Line, travelling via Nogita. There is no need to double back to Kyudai-Gakkentoshi if you are already staying in Maebaru or combining the town with the northern coast.

Allow roughly half an hour to the Futamigaura area, depending on the service. Departures are limited, so check the Nogita–Futamigaura timetable or select that route in the operator’s timetable index. It is useful for a planned stop in Nogita, but leaving the bus for a café can create a long wait for the next one.

Ito-Shima-go highway bus: useful for Maebaru, Kafuri and Shima

The Ito-Shima-go (いと・しま号) links Hakata and Tenjin with Maebaru, Kafuri and the Shima area. Choose it when your hotel or destination is near its route. It is a regional highway service, rather than a bus that circles Itoshima’s major sightseeing spots.

From Hakata / Tenjin to Adult single fare from 1 October 2026
Maebaru ¥700
Kafuri ¥830
Nogita ¥1,100
Ito depot ¥1,500

These examples show why a single “Itoshima bus fare” is misleading. Confirm your actual stops in the Ito-Shima-go fare table and official timetable. The service is not reservable, and a full bus may mean waiting.

For Futamigaura alone, the West Coast Liner is more direct. For Keya, train to Chikuzen-Maebaru plus the Keya Line is easier to follow. For Shiraito Falls or Raizan, use the appropriate route from the south side of Chikuzen-Maebaru, with the reservation rule below in mind.

Itoshima community buses: ¥200 local rides

The city’s fixed-route community buses charge ¥200 per adult ride and ¥100 per child ride. Their fares did not change with Showa’s 1 October 2026 fare revision. Useful routes include Keya, Nogita–Futamigaura, Shiraito, Raizan, Funakoshi and Fukae. The fare is attractive, but an hour or more between departures can matter far more than the saving.

Keya no Oto Park, the forest trail and sightseeing boat

From Chikuzen-Maebaru’s north side, take the Keya Line. Use 芥屋購買店 (Keya Kobaisho) for Keya no Oto Park and the wooded path often nicknamed “Totoro Forest”, about 8 minutes away on foot. For the boat boarding point, get off at 芥屋 (Keya) and allow about 10 minutes. The beach is also reached from the Keya area; choose the stop for your actual destination.

Boat operations depend on the operating season and sea conditions. Check the official tourism listing for the Keya sightseeing boat before building your bus day around a sailing. The park walk and the boat are separate activities.

Shiraito Falls: the bus does not stop at the waterfall

From Chikuzen-Maebaru’s south side, take the Shiraito Line to 白糸 (Shiraito). You still have about 30 minutes of uphill walking to the falls, as explained in the official Shiraito Falls access information. Add the walk in both directions when choosing a return bus.

That final stretch can be tiring in summer heat or rain, and it is a poor match for a large stroller, a toddler who cannot walk far or someone with limited mobility. A rental car, a prearranged taxi or a tour that suits your group is easier in those circumstances. Do not confuse the Shiraito bus stop with a drop-off at the waterfall entrance.

Raizan Sennyoji Temple: weekday daytime travel must be booked

Use the Raizan route from the south side of Chikuzen-Maebaru to 雷山観音前 (Raizan Kannon-mae), then walk about 7 minutes. On weekdays between 08:30 and 17:00, access is by the Choi Soko Yokamachi Mirai-go on-demand service, which requires registration and a reservation. This is a specific operating rule, not simply a suggestion to reserve if you can.

Check the Raizan Sennyoji access information and the current city timetable. Extra autumn buses, when announced, apply only to their stated dates; a previous year’s foliage shuttle is not a promise of service this year.

The on-demand bus: register before you plan to ride

Choi Soko Yokamachi Mirai-go (チョイソコよかまちみらい号) serves designated areas including Raizan, Iharayama, Sone, Kawahara and the town circulation area. It is a shared, reservation-based service with a defined operating area rather than a bus with a complete fixed timetable.

Item What to know
Operating window Weekdays, 08:30–17:00
Adult fare ¥200 per ride
Child fare ¥100 per ride, subject to the applicable child-fare rules
Before riding Register as a member, then reserve the ride
Payment The city lists cash, PayPay and specified bus tickets/passes; do not rely on a transport IC card
Good fit A preplanned trip, especially for a longer Itoshima stay
Poor fit Arriving at a mountain bus stop with no registration or reservation

Read Itoshima City’s on-demand bus instructions for the service area and booking process. Allow time to understand registration and reservation details before travelling; if that is impractical, choose a regular bus day, a taxi, car or suitable tour instead.

Itoshima Sunset Line: linking Futamigaura, Nogita and Keya

The Sunset Line is one of the few useful coastal links between the Futamigaura/Nishinoura area and Keya via Nogita. It can make a no-car coastal day possible, but it is not a frequent sightseeing shuttle and the name does not mean it will necessarily take you home after sunset.

Read the Nishinoura / Sunset Line timetable for the right weekday, weekend, holiday or school-calendar pattern. Work backwards from your Keya-to-Maebaru return connection before assigning time to cafés and viewpoints. The Sunset Line uses distance-based fares, so do not apply the city’s ¥200 flat fare to it.

A useful outline is Futamigaura → Nogita → Keya Kobaisho / Keya no Oto Park, followed by the Keya Line to Chikuzen-Maebaru. If the connections do not work, drop Nogita or choose only one coastal area. A last-minute taxi between distant beaches can be expensive and may not be immediately available.

Which Itoshima bus pass is worth buying?

Itoshima Peninsula Marutto 1day Free Pass

Pass Adult Child Main coverage
Local-bus version ¥1,000 ¥500 Eligible Showa local routes in Itoshima and Fukuoka
Highway-bus version ¥2,000 ¥1,000 Eligible local routes plus West Coast Liner and Ito-Shima-go

The operator’s current pass information lists both products in the my route smartphone app, with English support. Download and register before the journey, and read the current in-app usage conditions. Showa’s 1 October 2026 ticket notice says other special tickets and free passes keep their existing prices and validity.

A simple break-even check

  • West Coast Liner return to Futamigaura: ¥1,400 × 2 = ¥2,800. The ¥2,000 highway-bus pass saves ¥800, even without another bus ride, provided your journeys are covered
  • Only ¥200 community buses: five adult rides total ¥1,000, so the local pass breaks even at five rides and saves on the sixth. One or two local rides cost just ¥200–¥400
  • One highway-bus ride plus local buses: add the actual fares first. A ¥1,400 single plus one ¥200 community ride is ¥1,600, below the highway pass price
  • Nishinoura or Sunset Line travel: use the distance-based fare table in your calculation; these rides are not automatically ¥200

Neither version replaces your subway/JR train fare. A rail trip to Chikuzen-Maebaru with a simple Keya return normally does not justify a ¥1,000 local bus pass. The pass becomes more useful when your actual covered routes and fares add up, rather than simply because you are visiting Itoshima.

Should you buy a SUNQ Pass?

A SUNQ Pass makes more sense for a wider Kyushu bus itinerary than for a single Itoshima outing. If your trip also includes Nagasaki, Kumamoto (Traditional Chinese guide), Beppu or Yufuin, compare the covered journeys over the pass’s valid days. Check eligibility for every intended service, including any community or on-demand bus, instead of assuming all Showa-branded vehicles qualify.

No-car half-day itinerary: Futamigaura and a seaside café

For a first visit with few transfers, keep the day around Futamigaura. This is a planning sequence, not a published bus schedule: select actual outbound and return services first, then fit the walk and meal between them.

Part of the day Plan
Morning West Coast Liner from Hakata or Tenjin to Futamigaura
After arrival Walk to the white torii and Married Couple Rocks
Late morning / lunch Choose a nearby café or restaurant
Early afternoon Walk along the coast towards the Palm Beach area
Afternoon Take the return service selected before leaving Fukuoka

Do not force Shiraito Falls or Keya into this half-day. Read our Futamigaura rocks and white torii guide (Traditional Chinese) for the sightseeing side of the visit. If sunset is essential, plan the return transport around that priority before you go.

No-car day itinerary: Chikuzen-Maebaru and Keya

This is a straightforward choice for a town walk, the forest path and coastal scenery. Start with the Keya Line timetable, then place lunch and an optional boat trip into the available gaps.

Part of the day Plan
Morning Subway/JR train to Chikuzen-Maebaru; a short town or café stop
Late morning Keya Line bus from the station’s north side
Midday Keya no Oto Park / forest trail and lunch
Afternoon Optional sightseeing boat if it is operating and the timing fits
Later afternoon Preselected Keya Line bus back to Chikuzen-Maebaru
Evening Train to Tenjin, Hakata or Fukuoka Airport, with an appropriate travel buffer

Do not lock in a sailing and restaurant reservation before checking the buses. The train is the flexible part of this day; the local bus connection is what sets your pace.

A more ambitious coastal day: Futamigaura, Nogita and Keya

A workable direction is Fukuoka → Futamigaura → Nogita → Keya → Chikuzen-Maebaru → Fukuoka by train. Use a combination of the West Coast Liner or train/Nishinoura Line to reach the coast, then suitable local routes for onward travel.

  • Confirm both Futamigaura–Nogita and Nogita–Keya connections for your exact date
  • Keep café stops short enough to catch the planned onward bus
  • Save the final Keya–Maebaru bus details before leaving the station
  • Read weekday and weekend columns separately
  • Leave a backup service rather than making the last bus your only way home

If the gaps make the day feel rushed, choose Futamigaura and Keya only or stay within one area. The fact that places appear close on a peninsula map does not mean they have convenient bus connections.

Driving to Itoshima and choosing a rental-car pickup point

A car is useful when you want to combine the coast and the mountains, carry a stroller or change the day around the weather. From central Fukuoka, routes may use the Fukuoka Urban Expressway and Fukuoka–Maebaru Road / Nishi-Kyushu Expressway before local roads. Imajuku-side access can suit Futamigaura; Maebaru-side access is useful for central Itoshima and the mountains. Follow navigation for the exact destination rather than treating one interchange as best for every stop.

Allow about 40–60 minutes to parts of Itoshima in light traffic, and longer for farther sights or a busy weekend. Summer beach traffic, holiday parking queues and autumn foliage crowds can change the calculation substantially. The total driving cost includes the rental, fuel, tolls, parking and any selected insurance options.

Pickup area Best fit Trade-off
Fukuoka Airport Arriving and starting a longer Kyushu road trip Allow time for the rental company’s pickup/shuttle procedure
Hakata Staying near Hakata or exploring the city before the drive City traffic when leaving and returning
Tenjin A hotel close to the rental branch Busier streets, one-way roads and parking to navigate
Chikuzen-Maebaru Taking the train first and avoiding central Fukuoka driving Fewer vehicles/branches; reserve well ahead

Documents and driving eligibility

Bring your passport, the original valid driving licence, the permit or official Japanese translation required for that licence, your reservation confirmation and the payment method required by the rental company. Eligibility depends on the licence’s issuing country or region, so check JAF’s official guidance for foreign licence holders before booking.

For example, Taiwan-issued licences require the original licence plus an accepted Japanese translation. A Hong Kong visitor generally needs an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention together with the required original documents. A home-country licence alone, an unofficial translation or an IDP issued under a different convention is not a safe assumption. Check age, licence-history and card requirements with the rental company as well.

Parking and a sensible driving route

  • Futamigaura: use designated public or commercial parking; never stop on the road or private land for a photo
  • Keya: allow extra time when the beach and sightseeing boats are busy
  • Shiraito Falls: summer weekends can bring queues on the approach road
  • Raizan: foliage-season traffic and parking restrictions may apply
  • Cafés: spaces are generally intended for customers; a café car park is not all-day sightseeing parking

One useful full-day outline is Fukuoka → Shiraito Falls → Keya no Oto Park → Nogita lunch → Futamigaura → Fukuoka. It puts the mountain visit earlier and moves east along the coast later. Treat it as a selection of stops, not a requirement to do everything: a long lunch, traffic or time at the falls may mean dropping a stop. If you want sunset at Futamigaura, make the rental return time late enough without forcing a rushed night drive.

Taxis and private transfers: solve the difficult leg

A taxi can be a good compromise between using buses for everything and renting a car. Take the train to Chikuzen-Maebaru or another suitable station, then arrange the one transfer that is hard by bus. This is particularly useful for a small group, limited mobility, luggage or a mountain trip that does not fit the bus schedule.

Arrange the return pickup before setting off for a remote sight. Do not assume a taxi rank or a ride-hailing car will be available on the coast. Ask the hotel, tourism office or taxi company for an estimate based on the actual route; a full day of metered taxis can cost much more than a prequoted charter. The tourism association’s local transport page lists taxi options and explains the main station transfers.

For a private group, compare the existing Kyushu custom day-charter listing and check that Itoshima, the vehicle size and your requested stops are included in the chosen package. A Kyushu-wide product title alone does not guarantee any particular route.

Guided day tours from Fukuoka

A day tour is practical when you want several distant sights without driving or coordinating low-frequency buses. The trade-off is a fixed meeting point, limited time at each stop and less freedom to wait for better weather or sunset. A tour is a full itinerary, not a one-way transport ticket or hop-on/hop-off pass.

Existing tour option What to compare before booking
Fukuoka coastal / Itoshima day trip The selected route’s stops and seasonal changes
Shiraito Falls, Meoto Iwa and Totoro Forest day trip Walking, meeting point, guide language and the package’s actual inclusions
Yanagawa and Itoshima scenic day tour Whether the selected option includes Yanagawa/Dazaifu, and how much time remains in Itoshima
Kyushu custom private day charter Service area, vehicle, hours, tolls, parking and the agreed itinerary

The linked products are separate bookings with different routes. Read the selected date and package rather than relying on the headline image: waterfalls, autumn temples, Yanagawa and Dazaifu are not necessarily included together. Confirm lunch, admission, child seats, guide language and cancellation conditions.

Luggage is a real restriction, not a minor detail. The Shiraito Falls / Meoto Iwa / Totoro Forest listing warns that smaller vehicles can be used and that large suitcases or strollers may not be carried. Families should verify their exact arrangement before booking. Leave flexibility after the return journey instead of planning a tight flight or Shinkansen connection.

Itoshima with children or older travellers

Your group’s plan A manageable transport choice
Futamigaura only Direct West Coast Liner, with a planned return
Futamigaura + a nearby café Direct bus or rental car
Keya park + beach Train + Keya Line if the walks and bus times suit
Shiraito Falls Car, suitable tour or arranged taxi is easier than the uphill bus-stop walk
Three or more scattered sights Rental car, private charter or a suitable day tour
Large stroller / substantial luggage Check vehicle limits carefully; a rental car can be easier

For older travellers, limit the number of changes and the time standing outdoors. A car or private transfer gives the most control over rest stops; a suitable tour is another option, but check the walking involved. A direct bus outing to Futamigaura is more manageable than a day linking Futamigaura, Nogita, Keya and the mountains by several local buses.

Coastal stops may have little sheltered waiting space, while summer heat, wind and rain can make even a modest walk tiring. Choose the route for the least mobile person in the group. “Accessible by bus” does not mean “step-free from the stop to the attraction”, especially at Shiraito Falls and on the forest paths.

What to do with large luggage

For a day trip, leave large bags at your Fukuoka hotel or arrange storage around Hakata or Tenjin, subject to availability. Travel with a small day bag. Do not rely on finding a large locker at Chikuzen-Maebaru or on a café storing a suitcase for you.

  • Local buses are not airport luggage coaches and popular services can be full
  • Walking to waterfalls, forest paths and coastal stops is awkward with rolling luggage
  • Tour vehicles may have explicit suitcase and stroller restrictions
  • If arriving from the airport for an Itoshima overnight stay, confirm luggage storage with the accommodation or choose transport that fits your bags

If you are still deciding where to leave your bags and stay, our Fukuoka accommodation guide compares useful base areas.

Rain, seasons and food stops: adjust the route

Itoshima’s coast, sunsets and outdoor walks are best enjoyed with enough weather flexibility. In light rain, a shorter plan around Chikuzen-Maebaru, a seafood lunch or a café can still work. Ito Sai Sai produce market, the Ito-koku History Museum and seasonal oyster huts are alternatives, but each still needs its own transport plan; they are not all clustered around one station.

Avoid forcing an exposed coastal bus-hopping day, a long waterfall approach walk, a Tateishiyama hike or a sightseeing boat trip in poor conditions. Strong winds, heavy rain and typhoons can affect roads and services. Check Showa Bus’s operating notices and the attraction’s own information before leaving.

Season / interest What changes in your transport plan
Spring and autumn walks Comfortable for a focused coastal route; check the forecast
Summer beaches and waterfalls Allow for heat, road queues and busy parking
Autumn Raizan visit Confirm the current year’s transport notice and weekday reservation rule
Winter oyster huts Check the hut’s operating season and transport to the particular harbour
Sunset photography Arrange the actual journey home before committing to a late stay

Seafood bowls, oyster huts, cafés and local produce can all anchor a day, but choose lunch within the area you are already visiting. A famous café on another part of the coast can cost an extra bus connection and a long wait. Leave room for a meal without making every food stop a separate destination.

Transport trade-offs at a glance

Option Cost and reliability Sightseeing reach Luggage / comfort
Train Good value and unaffected by road congestion Rail corridor and onward connections Useful main leg; sightseeing still needs another mode
West Coast Liner Moderate fare; affected by traffic and capacity Best direct public option for Futamigaura Fewer changes, but seats and bag space are not guaranteed
Ito-Shima-go Fare depends strongly on the destination Maebaru, Kafuri and Shima-route destinations Choose according to the accommodation or stop
Train + ¥200 community buses Low fares; infrequent departures shape the day Good for one selected area More walking and waiting
Rental car Costs shared more effectively in a group; traffic still matters Most flexible combination of coast and mountains Useful for bags, children and rest stops
Guided tour Package price and fixed schedule Several selected sights Check vehicle and walking requirements
Taxi / charter Higher cost; obtain a quote for a long route Flexible point-to-point access Arrange vehicle size and the return ride

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating Chikuzen-Maebaru Station as if it were beside Futamigaura
  • Looking for the abolished 二見ヶ浦・夫婦岩前 bus stop
  • Using 大口・櫻井神社西口 as the closest stop to the Married Couple Rocks
  • Assuming a subway pass covers the JR section west of Meinohama

Itoshima transport FAQ

Can I visit Itoshima without renting a car?

Yes. Futamigaura by direct bus and Chikuzen-Maebaru plus Keya by train/local bus are sensible choices. A multi-stop day across both the coast and the mountains is much harder; use a tour or prearranged transport if that wider route matters.

How long does it take from Fukuoka, and what is the train fare?

A through train to Chikuzen-Maebaru takes about 35–40 minutes from Tenjin, 40–45 minutes from Hakata or 45–50 minutes from Fukuoka Airport. Adult single fares are ¥640 from Tenjin/Hakata and ¥680 from the airport. Add the airport terminal shuttle if needed, plus onward travel from the station to your sight.

Can I go directly from the airport?

Some Airport Line trains continue onto the JR Chikuhi Line, so a direct train is possible. Check the destination display; a service ending at Meinohama needs a change. The subway station serves the domestic terminal, so international arrivals need the terminal shuttle first.

What is the easiest bus to Futamigaura, and where do I get off?

The West Coast Liner runs from Hakata and Tenjin without a rail transfer. Get off at 二見ヶ浦・月と太陽糸島茶房前 or 二見ヶ浦・PALMBEACH前. Alternatively, use the Nishinoura Line from Kyudai-Gakkentoshi or the Nogita–Futamigaura Line from Chikuzen-Maebaru.

How much is the West Coast Liner, and should I buy the pass?

Hakata/Tenjin to the Futamigaura stops is ¥1,400 each way from 1 October 2026. A same-day return is ¥2,800 separately versus ¥2,000 for the highway-bus day pass, a saving of ¥800 if your rides meet the pass conditions. It is not necessary to add more sightseeing just to make that comparison work.

Can I reserve the West Coast Liner?

No. Boarding is subject to capacity. Queue early on busy days and plan a backup departure; the pass does not reserve a seat.

Do the buses accept Suica or ICOCA?

Many regular Showa services accept interoperable transport IC cards, but do not assume that every city or on-demand vehicle does. Check the payment signs for the route and carry cash. The city’s on-demand information lists cash, PayPay and specified tickets/passes rather than transport IC payment.

How do I reach Keya, Shiraito Falls or Raizan?

For Keya, use the Keya Line from Chikuzen-Maebaru’s north side. Keya Kobaisho is about 8 minutes from the park; Keya stop is about 10 minutes from the boat boarding point. For Shiraito Falls, the south-side Shiraito Line leaves you about 30 minutes uphill on foot from the falls. For Raizan, use the south-side route to Raizan Kannon-mae plus a 7-minute walk, remembering that weekday 08:30–17:00 travel requires the registered on-demand service.

How much are the local buses and local-only pass?

Itoshima community buses are ¥200 per adult ride or ¥100 per child ride. The local-only Itoshima Peninsula pass is ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for children. For adults riding only ¥200 buses, five trips break even and six save money. The Nishinoura and Sunset lines have their own distance-based fares.

Is cycling a realistic alternative?

It can work for a selected area, particularly with enough time and a suitable bicycle. It is not a shortcut around the whole peninsula: the coast is farther from Chikuzen-Maebaru than a station map suggests, there are hills and wind, and the mountain sights are a different undertaking. Check rental availability, opening/return times and your own fitness before replacing the bus plan with a bicycle.

Is Itoshima suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes, with a route that fits the group. Keep public-transport outings simple, allow rest stops and check walking surfaces. For several scattered sights, a car or suitable tour is easier; Shiraito Falls’ bus-stop walk deserves particular attention.

Do I need to stay overnight?

No for a focused Futamigaura or Keya day trip. An overnight stay gives you more freedom for sunset, a boat trip and a slower coastal or mountain visit. Check dinner options and the last transport to the accommodation, especially away from the railway.

Where to stay for your Itoshima transport plan

Base Best for Transport consideration
Chikuzen-Maebaru A no-car overnight stay JR access and several bus routes; still plan the last local departure
Futamigaura / Nishinoura Sea views, couples and sunset West Coast Liner or car; evening transport is limited
Keya Beach, boat and a quieter nature stay Train + Keya Line or car; fewer transport choices after dark
Meinohama / western Fukuoka Combining the city with Itoshima Useful rail access or a shorter drive west
Tenjin A day trip plus city shopping and food Choose the train for Maebaru or West Coast Liner for Futamigaura
Hakata Airport, Shinkansen and wider Kyushu travel Easy access to subway through trains and highway buses

For most single-day visits, staying in Hakata or Tenjin avoids moving luggage. Stay on the coast if the slower pace or sunset is part of the trip, then plan the final journey to the hotel rather than assuming local buses run late.

Other Fukuoka activities for a separate part of the trip

Fukuoka city attractions need their own tickets and travel time. If you add one after Itoshima, check its last admission and your actual return rather than booking it tightly after a bus or tour.

The simplest way to choose your route

Choose the destination first. Take the subway/JR through train for Chikuzen-Maebaru, the West Coast Liner for a simple Futamigaura outing, or train plus the Keya Line for Keya. For Shiraito Falls, account for the uphill walk; for Raizan, check the weekday reservation requirement. A car, charter or suitable day tour is the practical choice when coast and mountains must fit into the same day.

Before you leave, check the current stop name, the actual return service and the full-day fare. That short check makes much more difference to an Itoshima day than adding one more attraction to the list.
