Hakodate to Noboribetsu: the route to book
For most travelers, the simplest way from Hakodate to Noboribetsu is a direct Limited Express Hokuto from Hakodate Station, followed by a Donan Bus to Noboribetsu Onsen. There is no reason to travel all the way to Sapporo and double back.
The important distinction is between Noboribetsu Station and Noboribetsu Onsen. The station is roughly 8 km from the hot-spring town. If you are visiting Jigokudani, staying at an onsen hotel or exploring the hot-spring streets, the train is only the first part of the journey. Allow roughly 2 hours 30–40 minutes for the train, then the bus connection and about 14–25 minutes on the bus to the Noboribetsu Onsen stop.
A well-connected trip takes around three hours from Hakodate Station to the hot-spring town, but a long wait can make it substantially longer. For an itinerary that also includes Sapporo, an overnight stay in Noboribetsu is usually a better use of time than returning to Hakodate that evening. Use our Hakodate travel guide to plan the days before you leave.
| Option | Planning time | Cost to compare | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hokuto to Noboribetsu Station | About 2 hr 30–40 min; no train change | ¥7,790 adult ordinary reserved-seat reference fare | Most independent travelers; Marine Park NIXE visitors |
| Hokuto + bus to Noboribetsu Onsen | Train + waiting time + approximately 14–25 min by bus | ¥8,240 using the above rail fare plus the ¥450 bus fare | Jigokudani and onsen-hotel stays |
| Rental car via the expressway | About 3 hr 10 min in the tourism board’s estimate, before breaks and delays | Rental, fuel, tolls, parking and any one-way return charge | Groups and road trips with stops en route |
| Direct highway bus | No dedicated Hakodate–Noboribetsu service | Do not budget for an assumed direct bus | The Hakodate–Sapporo bus is a different route |
These adult one-way fares are planning references, not quotations for every ticket product. Seat class, discounts and seller charges can change the amount you pay.
Is the Hokuto running again?
The blanket suspension following the August 2026 rain damage is no longer the correct starting point for planning this route. JR Hokkaido announced that the affected Muroran Line section would reopen from the first trains on 10 September 2026. Its 9 September reopening notice also warned of temporary speed restrictions causing delays of around 10 minutes.
That dated notice is not a guarantee of today’s service. Check JR Hokkaido’s train operation information and journey search before leaving, especially after heavy rain or snow. A train can appear in the normal timetable and still be canceled or delayed. If disruption is significant, ask JR about the actual alternatives available that day rather than assuming there will be a replacement bus directly to your hotel.
Taking the Limited Express Hokuto from Hakodate
Board at Hakodate Station in the city center and choose a Sapporo-bound Hokuto that calls at Noboribetsu. You remain on the same train through Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and the coastal section of the route. Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto is a station name; Hokuto is the limited express train. You do not need a separate ride to the Shinkansen station when starting in central Hakodate.
This is a conventional limited express, not a Shinkansen. The official Hokuto train guide shows its stops, and the official JR Hokkaido route map helps put Hakodate, Noboribetsu and Sapporo in order.
Choosing a departure
The following October 2026 timetable examples help you choose a departure. The Noboribetsu column is the scheduled departure time at that stop, not a precise arrival promise. Use the official northbound Hokuto timetable and date-specific journey search for your trip; temporary changes take precedence.
| Train | Leaves Hakodate | Scheduled Noboribetsu stop | Planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hokuto 1 | 06:02 | 08:37 | Early start; check the morning bus gap |
| Hokuto 3 | 07:37 | 10:15 | Useful morning departure |
| Hokuto 5 | 08:56 | 11:29 | Late-morning arrival at the station |
| Hokuto 7 | 10:05 | 12:42 | Good for an afternoon in the onsen town |
| Hokuto 9 | 10:45 | 13:20 | Check hotel luggage-drop arrangements |
| Hokuto 11 | 12:14 | 14:49 | Allow for the bus before hotel check-in |
| Hokuto 13 | 13:31 | 16:10 | Check your hotel’s dinner deadline |
| Hokuto 15 | 15:01 | 17:34 | Less time for sightseeing on arrival |
| Hokuto 17 | 16:40 | 19:18 | Check the last bus carefully |
| Hokuto 19 | 17:55 | 20:26 | After the last station-to-onsen bus shown below |
| Hokuto 21 | 18:43 | 21:21 | Arrange onward transport in advance |
For an onsen stay with dinner included, work backward from the hotel’s latest dinner or check-in time. A train arriving at Noboribetsu in the evening does not necessarily get you to the hotel in time to eat.
Tickets, fares and reservations
JR Hokkaido’s regular-ticket guide gives ¥7,790 as the Hakodate–Noboribetsu adult ordinary-seat fare in its example itinerary. A normal Hokuto booking needs both the basic fare and the reserved-seat limited express charge. Check the total rather than comparing a supplement-only price with an all-in ticket.
All Hokuto seats are reserved. Book your seat ahead of time when possible, using JR-EAST Train Reservation through JR Hokkaido’s site or an appropriate JR station ticket counter or machine. An applicable rail pass covers the journey, but you should still obtain the seat reservation before boarding.
If a train is full, JR has a specific sold-out train procedure: ordinary-ticket travelers need the basic fare plus a “vacant seat only” ticket; eligible rail-pass holders can travel without a seat assignment under JR’s conditions. Neither option guarantees a seat, and the Green Car is excluded. Reserving another train is usually more comfortable than planning to stand for this journey.
You can also compare the existing Hakodate–Noboribetsu rail tickets on KKday (Chinese-language page). Select Hokuto and read the actual ticket collection and change conditions. Generic Shinkansen wording on a booking page does not change the train you are taking.
Do not expect to tap Suica or Kitaca for this entire intercity journey. Arrange a proper rail ticket or valid pass. Buy food and drinks before boarding too: JR Hokkaido does not provide regular onboard sales on its limited express trains.
From Noboribetsu Station to Noboribetsu Onsen

For the hot-spring town, leave the station and take Donan Bus from Noboribetsu-ekimae (登別駅前). The stop named Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) serves the hot-spring town; some buses continue to stops closer to individual hotels, including Daiichi Takimoto-mae and Ashiyu-iriguchi. Check the stop recommended by your accommodation before you travel.
| Detail | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Adult fare to Noboribetsu Onsen | ¥450 one way |
| Bus ride to the Onsen stop | Approximately 14–25 minutes in the current stop-by-stop timetable |
| Suica / Kitaca and similar transport IC cards | Not accepted on this route |
| Visa contactless payment | Listed for NA and NB services; carry cash for other buses |
| Last departure shown from the station | 20:04, reaching Noboribetsu Onsen at 20:25; recheck for your date |
Use Donan’s station-to-onsen timetable for the outward trip and its onsen-to-station timetable for the return. The route page’s headline duration is 27 minutes, but the stop-by-stop table distinguishes the shorter ride to Noboribetsu Onsen from journeys continuing to Ashiyu-iriguchi. Match the actual stop rather than adding 27 minutes to every departure.
Why the connection matters more than a few minutes on the train
In the timetable shown, the 08:54 bus reaches Noboribetsu Onsen at 09:15, while the next listed station departure is 10:25. Missing the earlier bus therefore makes a substantial difference. The 10:25 service reaches the Onsen stop at 10:39; the 10:44 service reaches it at 11:05.
Hokuto 3’s approximately 10:15 station call leaves only about 10 minutes for the 10:25 bus, before any delay or time needed to leave the platform. The 10:44 bus gives more breathing room. Similarly, Hokuto 5’s approximately 11:29 call can connect with the 11:45 bus in normal conditions, but this is not a protected connection.
Leave more room if you have several suitcases, travel with children or need assistance. If you arrive after the last bus or miss it, arrange a taxi or a confirmed hotel transfer. Do not assume taxis will be waiting or that a hotel offers a free shuttle. Get a quote or pickup confirmation rather than relying on an invented fixed taxi fare.
Useful official maps
The tourism association’s official access diagrams show the relationship between the railway, expressway and onsen town. Its English Noboribetsu visitor guide and maps are useful for locating hotels and sights. Use the operator’s live timetable, rather than an older map’s travel-time estimate, for the bus connection.
Going only to Noboribetsu Marine Park NIXE?
Noboribetsu Marine Park NIXE is about five minutes on foot from Noboribetsu Station according to the aquarium. You do not need to ride up to the hot-spring town first and return. This makes an aquarium-focused visit easier to fit into a travel day than a visit that repeatedly switches between the station and the onsen district.
See our Noboribetsu Marine Park NIXE guide for planning the visit. If you want both the aquarium and Jigokudani, group the station-area visit first, then travel uphill once and stay overnight if your itinerary allows.
Is there a direct Hakodate–Noboribetsu highway bus?
There is no dedicated scheduled highway bus from Hakodate to Noboribetsu or Noboribetsu Onsen. The Highway Hakodate bus timetable is for a different service connecting the Hakodate side with Sapporo and listed intermediate stops; it does not make a direct Noboribetsu booking possible just because it uses the same expressway.
For a straightforward public-transport trip from Hakodate, start with Hokuto. Services originating in Sapporo have different options, explained in our Sapporo–Noboribetsu transport guide.
Driving from Hakodate to Noboribetsu Onsen
Hokkaido’s official tourism site estimates about 3 hours 10 minutes via the Do-O Expressway and Noboribetsu-higashi IC, or about 4 hours 20 minutes on ordinary roads. Treat these as broad planning figures, then allow for your exact starting point, rest stops, traffic and weather.
A car makes more sense when the journey is part of a road trip, perhaps with time at Lake Toya, or when a group has enough luggage to make transfers awkward. For a simple move between two city or onsen hotels, the train avoids several hours of driving.
Compare the full car cost: rental, fuel, tolls, parking, necessary equipment and a possible fee for returning the car in a different city. Expressway charges depend on your entry and exit, vehicle and applicable conditions, so there is no single toll that fits every Hakodate departure. Our Hokkaido car rental guide covers the wider planning questions.
Luggage, families and travelers who need more time
For an overnight stay, the easiest plan is to confirm luggage storage with your hotel, drop your bags there and then explore. Do not assume early room access, but ask whether bags can be held before check-in. Dragging a suitcase around Jigokudani or on icy footpaths makes a simple afternoon much harder.
JR states that luggage spaces do not require a separate reservation. Space is still shared and finite; keep aisles clear and keep track of your bags. Its luggage guidance also covers size limits and strollers.
Day visitors can use the tourism association’s baggage storage service in Noboribetsu Onsen. It lists ¥500–¥700 per item, service hours of 09:00–16:30 and closing at 17:00, with possible changes during events. This service is in the onsen district, so it does not remove the need to carry your bag on the uphill bus.
For an aquarium-first itinerary, NIXE’s visitor information lists luggage storage and delivery to participating onsen hotels. Check the hotel’s eligibility and the service deadline before relying on it. Families and older travelers should also ask their hotel about its nearest bus stop and any bookable transfer. A short taxi ride for the final leg may be worth comparing if moving everyone and their luggage between vehicles is the main difficulty.
Does a Hokkaido Rail Pass cover this journey?
| Ticket or pass | Hakodate–Noboribetsu train | Onsen bus |
|---|---|---|
| Hokkaido Rail Pass | Covered within the pass validity and conditions; reserve an ordinary seat | Not covered |
| Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass | Does not cover the full trip from Hakodate | Not covered |
| Hakodate Travel Passport | Does not cover the full trip to Noboribetsu | Not covered |
| Regular point-to-point tickets | Buy the basic fare and Hokuto supplement | Pay separately |
The Hokkaido Rail Pass covers eligible JR Hokkaido journeys, but Donan Bus is a different operator. The smaller Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass does not reach Hakodate. The Hakodate Travel Passport is a local-area product, not a substitute for the entire intercity ticket.
Compare all the eligible rail journeys within the pass’s consecutive validity period. Using the quoted regular fares, two separate tickets for Hakodate–Noboribetsu and Noboribetsu–Sapporo total ¥12,680. That alone is below the ¥22,000 advance-purchase price of the five-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. Additional long-distance trips may change the calculation; buying a pass just for this one train journey does not.
If you continue farther around Hokkaido or return south, use our Sapporo–Hakodate transport guide to compare the rest of your route. Our Hokkaido travel guide (Traditional Chinese) also helps put the destinations together.
Select the actual Hokkaido Rail Pass if you need coverage from Hakodate. The same product page also lists smaller area passes. Check current eligibility, consecutive days and collection requirements before purchasing.
Day trip or overnight stay?
A day trip from Hakodate is possible, but the hot-spring version involves roughly six hours or more of travel once both bus rides and waiting are included. An early train can still give you a useful day, yet a missed connection can take a large bite out of it. It is rarely the most relaxed choice for a first visit.
| Plan | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Hakodate → Noboribetsu Onsen → Hakodate | Possible, but choose a limited sightseeing plan and check the return first |
| Hakodate → NIXE → Hakodate | Simpler final leg because the aquarium is near the station; still a long rail day |
| Hakodate → Noboribetsu overnight → Sapporo | The strongest fit when you want hot springs and are already heading north |
| Hakodate → Noboribetsu → Sapporo in one day | Works as a stopover if you keep the visit focused and have a luggage plan |
A practical two-day plan
Day 1: leave Hakodate in the morning, take Hokuto and the onsen bus, leave luggage at your accommodation, then visit Jigokudani and the hot-spring streets before dinner and a bath. Staying overnight removes the pressure to catch a train all the way back to Hakodate.
Day 2: allow time for breakfast and another bath, then take the bus back to Noboribetsu Station and continue toward Sapporo. Check the reverse-direction services rather than reading the outward timetable backward. Our Sapporo travel guide can help with the next stop.
If you only have an afternoon
Make that an afternoon in Noboribetsu after leaving Hakodate, ideally with an overnight stay. If you must continue to Sapporo the same evening, choose the core Jigokudani visit and hot-spring streets rather than trying to add the aquarium, Bear Park and several other attractions. Work out the luggage pickup time and bus back to the station before you start walking.
Winter travel and disruption planning
For travelers without snow-driving experience, Hokuto plus the bus is generally the easier winter choice when services are operating. Hokkaido’s winter-driving guidance explains the risks from slippery surfaces and poor visibility. Black ice can resemble a wet road; bridge decks, shaded sections and tunnel approaches deserve particular care.
A canceled train does not automatically make a rental car a sensible backup. Snowstorms can affect trains, buses and roads together. Leave room to change the travel day, avoid a fragile last connection and contact your hotel if disruption could affect dinner or check-in. At the onsen end, allow extra time for snowy sidewalks and move luggage before sightseeing.
Hakodate to Noboribetsu FAQs
Do I need to change trains at Sapporo or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto?
No. From central Hakodate, a direct Hokuto takes you to Noboribetsu. Sapporo is farther along the route.
Is there a Shinkansen to Noboribetsu?
No. The direct train for this journey is the Limited Express Hokuto. Do not select a Shinkansen product merely because a reseller uses that word in a page address.
Can I walk from Noboribetsu Station to Jigokudani?
The hot-spring town is roughly 8 km from the station, so this is not a practical station-to-sight walk for most visitors. Take the onsen bus or arrange a taxi, then explore locally.
Can I use Suica on the onsen bus?
No. Donan lists transport IC cards such as Suica and Kitaca as unavailable on this route. NA and NB services support Visa contactless payment; carry cash for other services.
What if I arrive on a late Hokuto?
The station-to-onsen timetable shown ends at 20:04. Hokuto 19 and 21 reach the station later than that. Arrange a confirmed taxi or hotel pickup, or choose an earlier train.
Is a reserved seat compulsory?
Hokuto has no non-reserved-seat carriage. Reserve ahead for a guaranteed seat. When a train is full, JR’s specific vacant-seat/standing arrangements apply, depending on whether you hold ordinary tickets or an eligible rail pass.
Does the Hokkaido Rail Pass include the last bus?
No. The train and Donan Bus have separate coverage. The adult one-way bus fare to Noboribetsu Onsen is ¥450 at the time of checking.
What is the best overall plan?
Take a morning or early-afternoon Hokuto, leave enough time for the bus and stay one night if hot springs are a priority. Continue to Sapporo the next day if it is already on your itinerary. That keeps the route straightforward and leaves time to enjoy Noboribetsu after you arrive.
