The most practical way to get from New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya is to take a JR train one stop to Minami-Chitose, change to the Limited Express Hokuto for Toya Station, then take a local bus or taxi to Toyako Onsen. Toya Station is not on the lakeshore: the final connection is an essential part of the journey, especially when choosing a hotel or arriving late.
Allow roughly 2–2½ hours from the airport railway station to Toyako Onsen when the connections work well, with additional time for airport arrivals procedures and reaching your hotel. A standard ordinary-season adult fare is ¥5,460 to Toya Station, plus ¥400 for the local bus, giving a useful one-way reference of ¥5,860. Your travel date, ticket type and actual connections determine the final price and journey time.
For most visitors, a single rail ticket is the sensible starting point. A Hokkaido Rail Pass is worth comparing if you will also take several long-distance trains. Families with several bags should first check whether their hotel offers a bookable airport shuttle, then compare a private transfer and Chitose car rental.
New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya: which route should you choose?
| Option | Time and cost guide | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport train + Hokuto + local bus | About 2–2½ hours with workable connections; approximately ¥5,860 one way in an ordinary fare period | Most independent travellers | One train change and a separate bus connection |
| Local trains + bus | Often 3 hours or more before the final bus; ¥3,100 rail fare + ¥400 bus | Travellers prioritising a lower rail fare | Infrequent connections and more luggage handling |
| Reserved hotel shuttle | Hotel-specific timetable and charge | Eligible hotel guests whose flights fit the departure | Advance booking, limited seats and guest restrictions |
| Private airport transfer | Get a quote for the exact hotel, vehicle and arrival time | Families, older travellers and groups with several bags | Usually a higher total cost; coverage must be confirmed |
| Rental car | Allow roughly 1½–2 hours on the road in reasonable conditions, after collection | A wider trip around Lake Toya and the surrounding countryside | Rental, fuel, tolls, parking and winter driving |
| Via Sapporo, then the reserved Toyako bus | The Sapporo–Toyako leg alone is about 2 hours 45 minutes and ¥3,700 | Visitors already planning a Sapporo stay | A substantial detour from the airport |
If your only aim is to reach a lakeside hotel, keep the route simple: change at Minami-Chitose rather than going into Sapporo. The hotel shuttle can be cheaper and easier for eligible guests, but a fixed afternoon departure is of little use if your flight lands too late to meet it.
Taking the train via Minami-Chitose
New Chitose Airport Station is beneath the domestic terminal. International passengers need to complete immigration and baggage collection, then follow the connecting walkway towards the domestic terminal and the JR signs. The official airport-to-JR station map is useful for seeing this walk before you arrive.
- At the airport station, buy the rail tickets through to Toya and arrange a Hokuto seat.
- Take an Airport service that stops at Minami-Chitose, the first stop from the airport.
- At Minami-Chitose, follow the departure display for a Hakodate-bound Limited Express Hokuto that calls at Toya.
- Get off at Toya Station and continue to Toyako Onsen by Donan Bus or a prearranged taxi.
- Complete the walk or local transfer from the lakeside bus stop to your hotel.
The rail journey is often around 1½ hours, but the wait at Minami-Chitose matters. Check the complete itinerary in JR Hokkaido’s timetable search rather than adding up only the minutes spent on trains. Do not follow a fixed platform number from an old guide; use the station display on the day.
Tickets, reserved seats and IC cards
The ordinary-season reference fare to Toya is ¥3,100 for the basic fare plus ¥2,360 for the Hokuto ordinary-class reserved seat. This assumes an ordinary unreserved car for the short airport-train leg. Reserved-seat seasonal supplements and discounts can change the amount you pay; an Airport u-seat is a separate optional upgrade.
Hokuto is an all-reserved-seat train. Reserve before boarding, including when travelling with a pass that covers the journey. If the train is sold out, JR’s vacant-seat-only ticket rules allow a different arrangement, but they do not guarantee a seat. Travellers with children or limited mobility are better served by a train with confirmed seats.
Toya is outside the airport’s IC-card area, so do not start this through journey by simply tapping a Suica or Kitaca at the airport gate. Obtain the appropriate basic-fare and limited-express tickets, or use a valid rail pass. The official JR route map shows both the route and IC-card boundaries.
How much time should you leave after landing?
Landing time is not the time you can reach the platform. Immigration, baggage delivery, the terminal walk, ticket collection and queues all come first. Avoid a non-flexible reservation based on a best-case arrival: international passengers should leave a generous allowance and be prepared for a later train. Even a 60–90-minute gap may be insufficient when arrivals are busy or the flight is delayed.
For domestic flights, checked baggage and the walk still take time. If buying after arrival, find a train with seats available and check its Toya bus connection before committing. Travellers already staying at an airport hotel have a more predictable start and can plan around a specific morning departure.
Toya Station to Toyako Onsen: the final bus connection
JR Toya Station serves the coastal side of the area, away from the main lakeside hotel district. From the station forecourt, take Donan Bus towards Toyako Onsen. The operator lists an adult one-way fare of ¥400 and a reference journey time of 26 minutes, although individual services take different routes and can be quicker or slower.
Check both the Toya Station–Toyako Onsen timetable and the return timetable while choosing your trains. Services are not frequent enough to assume there will always be a bus waiting. Some buses continue beyond the terminal towards Higashimachi; your hotel may recommend a later stop.
From Toyako Onsen Bus Terminal, the central lakeside promenade, cruise departure area and many hotels are within walking distance. Check the actual address before assuming that this applies to your accommodation. A hotel marketed as being “at Lake Toya” may be elsewhere around the lake or on a hillside.
Carry some yen cash for the local bus and follow the payment instructions on board. With heavy luggage, bad weather or a hotel far from the bus route, arrange a taxi from Toya Station. Do not rely on a taxi being immediately available for a late-night arrival; ask the hotel or taxi company in advance.
Is there a direct airport bus or hotel shuttle?
There is no frequent, turn-up-and-go airport bus that serves every Lake Toya hotel. Some hotels offer their own reserved shuttles. These are useful only when your accommodation, travel date and flight arrival meet the service’s conditions.
A concrete example is The Lake View TOYA Nonokaze Resort’s airport shuttle. Its published schedule departs New Chitose Airport at 14:00 and reaches the hotel at 16:20. The listed one-way fare is ¥1,500 per person, reduced to ¥1,000 for guests who book accommodation directly with the hotel by phone or through its official website. The bus is shared with other hotels in the group.
Book the shuttle separately and receive confirmation. Online applications are accepted until three days before the stay, subject to available seats. Follow the hotel’s current meeting instructions and arrive before departure; this is not a service that waits indefinitely for a delayed flight. If you change the room booking, check whether the shuttle reservation also needs to be made again. Other hotels may have entirely different rules.
Private transfers and sightseeing charters
A private transfer reduces luggage handling and takes you to the hotel rather than to a railway station. It is especially worth pricing for families, groups and travellers who would find the train-and-bus combination tiring. The quote needs to cover your exact hotel address, arrival time, passenger count and bags.
A generic airport-transfer search is a place to check availability, not proof that Lake Toya is included in every package. Select New Chitose Airport and the hotel address. Before paying, confirm the service area, child seats, flight-delay waiting policy, tolls and any late-arrival surcharge. Wheelchairs, strollers and ski equipment also use vehicle capacity.
A sightseeing charter serves a different purpose. The existing Sapporo-departure Lake Toya and Noboribetsu charter offers Toya-area routes, but its listed pickup and drop-off are in Sapporo. Do not book it as an airport-to-hotel transfer unless the operator explicitly confirms that change. It can make sense after a Sapporo stay if you want to visit several dispersed sights in one day.
Driving from New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya
The usual expressway route uses the Do-o Expressway towards Abuta-Toyako Interchange. The Nonokaze access guide quotes 109.1 km between Chitose Interchange and Abuta-Toyako Interchange; this is an interchange-to-interchange distance, not the complete airport-to-hotel trip.
Allow roughly 1½–2 hours on the road in reasonable conditions, then add the rental-company shuttle, collection paperwork, stops and the final drive to your accommodation. A rental car is most useful when you also want to explore Mount Usu, Showa-Shinzan, Silo Observatory or other parts of the lake. It is less compelling if you only plan to check into a central hotel and walk along the waterfront.
- Check the luggage capacity as well as the advertised number of seats.
- Budget for tolls, fuel, parking and the insurance options you choose.
- Confirm where the rental-office shuttle leaves from and allow time for collection.
- For winter travel, verify winter tyres and equipment with the rental company.
- Use a driver-operated option if you are not confident on snow and ice.
Snow tyres do not remove the risks of ice, poor visibility and early darkness. Roads and railways can both be disrupted by severe weather. Leave flexibility in your plans rather than relying on the normal driving estimate for an evening flight connection.
Are local trains worth the saving?
Travelling without Hokuto removes the limited-express charge. The standard rail fare is approximately ¥3,100, followed by the ¥400 bus fare. Depending on the itinerary, you may need changes at Minami-Chitose, Tomakomai and Higashi-Muroran. Rail travel and waiting can take three hours or more, before the last bus and hotel walk.
This can work if you are travelling light and have checked every connection. It is a poor fallback to improvise after a flight delay: a missed local service can leave a long wait, and the eventual arrival must still fit the lakeside bus. A confirmed hotel shuttle may also cost less than the local-train option for eligible guests, so compare your actual choices rather than assuming local trains are always cheapest.
Should you go via Sapporo for the direct bus?
Donan Bus runs a reservation-only Sapporo–Toyako Onsen service, with an adult one-way fare of ¥3,700 and a published reference time of 2 hours 45 minutes. It reaches the onsen district without the Toya Station transfer. The operator requires online reservations by two hours before the service’s departure from its starting point.
It is a useful option when you are already in Sapporo. From the airport, however, it means first travelling north into the city and then heading back towards Lake Toya. Once you add the airport leg, boarding-point walk and wait, the journey can exceed four hours. Choose it because Sapporo is part of your itinerary, rather than as a shortcut.
For that route, see our Sapporo to Lake Toya guide and Sapporo accommodation guide, the latter in Traditional Chinese.
Which rail pass covers this journey?
| Ticket | Adult price | Coverage for this trip | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single rail ticket | ¥5,460 ordinary-season reference, plus ¥400 local bus | Airport–Minami-Chitose–Toya | A one-off transfer or a short itinerary |
| Hokkaido Rail Pass, 5 consecutive days | ¥22,000 pre-purchase; ¥23,000 at designated stations | JR journey including Hokuto ordinary-class reserved seat; local bus separate | Several long-distance rail journeys within five days |
| Hokkaido Rail Pass, 7 consecutive days | ¥28,000 pre-purchase; ¥29,000 at designated stations | Same JR coverage | A longer multi-city rail trip |
| Hokkaido Rail Pass, 10 consecutive days | ¥37,000 pre-purchase; ¥38,000 at designated stations | Same JR coverage | Extensive rail travel over ten days |
| Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass | 4 consecutive days; ¥10,000 pre-purchase | Toya is outside its valid area | A different itinerary around Sapporo, Otaru and Noboribetsu |
The official Hokkaido Rail Pass page gives the current prices, eligibility and valid areas. Check those conditions before buying, and count only the journeys inside the consecutive validity period. The pass does not pay for the Donan Bus connection to Toyako Onsen.
A single airport transfer does not justify a ¥22,000 pass. It becomes more relevant when the same trip also includes long journeys to Hakodate, Sapporo or Asahikawa. Add up your planned tickets first. For the wider itinerary, our guides cover Hakodate, Sapporo, Otaru and Hokkaido trip planning (the Otaru and Hokkaido guides are in Traditional Chinese). The cheaper Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass should not be bought in the belief that it also includes Toya.
Getting from the station to hotels and sights
| Destination | Practical approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Toyako Onsen Bus Terminal | Donan Bus from Toya Station | Train-to-bus connection in both directions |
| Central lakeside hotels and promenade | Bus to the onsen district, then walk | Your hotel’s recommended stop and walking route |
| Cruise departure area | Bus to Toyako Onsen, then walk towards the lakeshore | Actual sailing times and weather conditions |
| Hotels elsewhere around the lake or uphill | Hotel shuttle, taxi or rental car as appropriate | Whether pickup is from Toya Station or Toyako Onsen |
| Showa-Shinzan and Mount Usu Ropeway | Check seasonal buses, or arrange a taxi or car | Operating dates and the return trip |
| Silo Observatory | Car or a carefully timed bus journey | The Sapporo–Toyako route serves the observatory, but runs infrequently |
The lakeside onsen district is manageable on foot once you have left your bags at the hotel. The wider lake is a different proposition. Do not assume that the ropeway, the observatory and a hotel on another shore are all within an easy walk of the bus terminal.

Can you visit Lake Toya as a day trip from the airport?
A day trip is possible if you are already near the airport early in the morning and can choose suitable trains. It is much less appealing immediately after an international arrival. The outward and return journeys can take up much of the day before you account for flight delays or luggage storage.
A realistic public-transport day focuses on the lakefront: take a morning train and bus, leave your bags with an agreed storage provider or hotel, have lunch, walk along the lake and choose one main activity. Keep the afternoon flexible and work backwards from a confirmed return bus and train. Treat this as an outline, not a published timetable.
For a first visit, an overnight stay is usually more rewarding. It gives you time for the hot springs and lake without trying to fit the ropeway, Silo Observatory and Noboribetsu into the same short stop. Avoid pairing an ambitious day trip with a tight same-day flight departure.
Luggage, winter travel and late arrivals
Hokuto’s train guide shows shared luggage spaces, including larger areas near the carriage entrances. They are available when free; a seat reservation does not reserve a private luggage slot. Keep aisles and doors clear, label your bags and keep passports and valuables with you. Buy food and drinks before boarding, as there is no onboard sales service.
Families should reserve seats together and leave enough time to use lifts and move bags. If you need wheelchair assistance, confirm arrangements with JR and your hotel before travel. For a private vehicle, make sure accessibility and luggage requirements are accepted explicitly rather than relying on a vehicle’s seat count.
For an afternoon or evening arrival, check the final useful connection all the way to the hotel. The last airport train is not necessarily the last train that can connect to Hokuto, and the last Hokuto does not guarantee a bus onward to the lake. Confirm the hotel’s check-in and dinner deadlines too.
If the arrival is too late or too uncertain, stay near the airport and travel the next morning. Our New Chitose Airport hotel guide is available in Traditional Chinese. In winter, keep extra time for both rail and road travel, check JR Hokkaido’s live service information, and recheck bus notices before setting out.
New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya FAQ
Is there a direct train from New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya?
No. Change at Minami-Chitose for Hokuto to Toya, then use a bus or taxi to reach the lakeside hotel district.
How much should I budget for the train and bus?
The ordinary-season adult reference is ¥5,460 for the train plus ¥400 for Donan Bus, or ¥5,860 one way. Confirm the fare for your travel date and any optional seat upgrades when booking.
Is Toya Station within walking distance of the onsen hotels?
Do not plan it as a station-to-hotel walk. Take the bus to Toyako Onsen or arrange a taxi. After reaching the onsen district, many central hotels are walkable, but your hotel’s exact location matters.
Can I use Suica or Kitaca for the whole rail journey?
No. Toya lies outside the airport’s IC-card area. Buy the correct through tickets or use a valid rail pass, and arrange your Hokuto seat.
Does the Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass include Toya?
No. Travel beyond its valid area requires additional payment. The wider Hokkaido Rail Pass covers the relevant JR journey, but the local bus is separate.
Should I book the hotel shuttle or the train?
Check the shuttle first if your hotel offers one and the flight leaves enough time to reach it. Choose the train when you need a wider choice of departures or the shuttle does not serve your booking.
What if my flight arrives late?
Check whether you can still reach both Toya and your hotel. Reserve a suitable transfer if available, or stay near the airport. Do not assume a lakeside bus or taxi will be waiting after the final useful connection.
The simplest plan for an overnight Lake Toya stay
For most independent travellers, book a Hokuto seat via Minami-Chitose and match it to the Toya Station bus. Keep the airport arrival allowance separate from the transport time, and check the hotel’s final walking or pickup instructions.
An eligible hotel shuttle can simplify the trip considerably. A private transfer earns its higher price when avoiding luggage transfers matters, while a rental car is most useful for exploring beyond the central lakefront. If you are continuing around southern Hokkaido, our guides to New Chitose Airport to Noboribetsu and Sapporo to Hakodate can help you choose a sensible route order.
