The Ice and Light Festival at Hida World Seikatsu Bunka Center suits travellers already staying in Takayama who enjoy ice sculpture and the way coloured light changes its appearance. It is not a December Christmas market or an attraction available every winter evening. The previous edition ran January 10–12, 2026, and its middle day opened only in the evening.

Dates for the January 2027 edition have not yet been announced. Keep future plans flexible until the centre’s event news confirms the next event rather than buying inflexible transport around a past three-day festival.

Daylight sculpture or illuminated ice?

The 18th Ice and Light Festival in 2026 featured work by the Chubu Ice Sculpture Association. Daylight highlights the transparency and carved details; after dark, illumination and the surrounding “forest of light” create a different atmosphere.

Its appeal is the changing texture of the same material, not a checklist of guaranteed giant figures. For photographs of coloured ice, a focused evening visit makes sense. For a closer interest in carving, daylight and night visits offer contrasting views. Allowing roughly 45–60 minutes is a useful planning estimate, not a guaranteed length for every visit.

Visit style Best for Main constraint
Daylight Carving details and an earlier return Not every festival day had daytime hours
After dark Colour, atmosphere and a winter date Arrange transport before relying on an evening visit
Both Travellers with time and a Takayama base Plan meals, breaks and indoor opening hours separately

Photographs of earlier events do not promise identical sculptures, animal designs or lighting layouts at the next edition. Outdoor ice also responds to weather, so check the organiser’s latest notice on the day.

The last complete schedule had a significant Sunday exception

Past January 2026 date Festival hours
Saturday, January 10 09:00–21:00
Sunday, January 11 17:00–21:00
Monday, January 12, a Japanese public holiday 09:00–21:00
Admission and venue Free; Fureai Plaza

Sunday’s 17:00 opening matters. Copying Saturday’s 09:00 start into a Sunday itinerary would not put you at an open festival. The historical notice also says weather may change the event period. Free admission removes a ticket cost, not the need for a flexible alternative.

The free ice event and the centre’s museum are separate attractions. A museum ticket is neither required admission nor a reservation for the outdoor sculptures.

A cultural centre address does not mean an indoor exhibition

Fureai Plaza is an outdoor ground-floor space connecting four buildings, with an octagonal paved central area. Dress for winter outdoors rather than expecting a heated exhibition hall.

Choose stable, slip-resistant footwear and keep gloves, a hat and extra layers accessible. Stop walking before framing a photograph, particularly when stepping backwards. With children, a short comfortable circuit is preferable to insisting on every possible angle while they become cold.

Start with a wider image of a sculpture and its lighting, then look more closely at the surface and refraction without touching or leaning on the work. Keep paths clear instead of using tripods or companions to hold an entire passage for a photograph. These are practical visiting suggestions, not permission to treat the plaza as a private shoot location.

From Takayama Station: not every Sarubobo bus stops here

Start at Takayama Nohi Bus Center beside the station’s east, or Norikura, exit. Take a Sarubobo service travelling via Matsuri no Mori; the centre is approximately 18 minutes away. Other buses carrying the same route name may skip this stop.

Option Typical travel estimate Planning point
Sarubobo bus About 18 minutes from the bus centre Check the Matsuri no Mori routing and S12 stop
Taxi About 15 minutes from Takayama Station Arrange the return before an evening visit
Car About 20 minutes from Takayama IC Use the first car park as directed; address: 900-1 Chishimacho, Takayama

These are approximate ordinary travel times, not guarantees in snow or traffic. Visitors needing accessible or priority spaces should consult the parking facilities page before choosing an entrance.

Intercity travel is additional. The Nagoya–Takayama transport guide helps establish a realistic arrival plan. A long return journey to Nagoya plus late-night ice viewing can make an unnecessarily demanding day.

The evening return is the decisive transport issue

In the October 2026 timetable, the Nohi city-bus timetable lists its final call at S12, World Seikatsu Bunka Center, at 16:18. Later Sarubobo services elsewhere on the route do not mean another service calls here. The published timetable has no departure from this stop after the night display.

Taking the bus out and staying after dark therefore requires another dependable return arrangement. A 21:00 festival closing time is not evidence of a bus after 21:00, and it is unwise to arrive assuming a taxi will be immediately available. Only a newly announced event shuttle would justify a different transport plan.

Staying in Takayama provides more flexibility. The Takayama hotel-area guide and family hotel guide can help connect the evening plan with dinner, warm clothing and a practical return.

Add the museum only if it interests you in its own right

The separate Hida Living Culture Museum introduces local craftsmanship and furniture, including around 100 chairs visitors can try. Its current normal hours are 10:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:20. Advance booking is recommended rather than compulsory for every visitor.

General admission is ¥500 for adults and high-school students and ¥200 for elementary and junior-high students. Gifu residents, people working in the prefecture and other qualifying visitors have separate exemptions. These are museum rules, not ice-festival fees. Its shop closed on March 30, 2026, so do not build a present-day souvenir-shopping stop around it.

Nor is the museum an all-evening warming room. If you prefer exploring central Takayama, a daytime visit to Takayama Jinya offers a different combination. Choose an indoor attraction because you want to see it, rather than spending an entire day at the centre just to wait for darkness.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a December Christmas event?

No. The previous festival took place January 10–12, 2026. It is winter ice-sculpture and illumination coverage, not a December Christmas market.

Was admission free?

The January 2026 festival was free. The centre’s museum has separate admission charges and exemptions.

Could visitors go on Sunday morning?

Not under that edition’s schedule: Sunday, January 11 opened 17:00–21:00. Check each day again when a new edition is announced.

Can I take a Sarubobo bus back after the illuminations?

The October 2026 timetable’s last call here is 16:18. Arrange a taxi, collection or car rather than relying on a post-event bus.
