Kiyosu’s winter illumination offers something different from a shopping-centre Christmas tree: a castle transformed by light and projection, with free outdoor viewing. Paying to enter the castle keep is an optional second experience, not a prerequisite for seeing the display.

The important distinction is between the lights, the keep’s night opening and the small market. They do not share identical calendars. Choose a weekend or public holiday if stalls are a priority; a castle-photography visit does not depend on the market being open.

Dates and three separate schedules

The 2026 Kiyosu illumination runs November 14–December 25, with lights 17:00–21:00 around Kiyosu Castle and the old castle-site park.

Component Published arrangement Cost implication
Lights and castle projection 17:00–21:00; projection approximately every 20 minutes Free viewing
Castle and Furusato no Yakata night opening Until 21:00; Monday closures move when Monday is a holiday Keep admission is extra
Mini market Weekends and public holidays, 16:00–20:00 Purchases are separate
Food trucks and stalls Generally 16:00–20:00; food trucks have Monday-related exclusions Do not expect an identical line-up daily

The opening ceremony is planned for November 14 at 17:00 in front of Furusato no Yakata. It is an opening-day occasion, not a daily performance. Weather can change the stalls and programme, so check the current notice before leaving.

Outdoor projection or the castle interior?

For a first visit, start with a complete projection cycle from ground level. The roughly 20-minute interval gives flexibility, but does not mean the show is continuously in progress from the instant you arrive.

Consider the keep afterwards if you enjoy elevated city views and it is an operating day. The two experiences look in different directions: outdoor viewing reveals the illuminated building, while the keep offers views of its surroundings. A paid entry does not automatically provide the best view of the exterior projection.

For photographs, leave space around the castle silhouette and choose a position that keeps the walkway open. If someone in the group is cold, agree to reassess after one cycle rather than repeating every colour indefinitely.

Kiyosu and Shin-Kiyosu both involve a walk

To reach the Kiyosu Castle illumination from Nagoya, take JR to Kiyosu Station or Meitetsu to Shin-Kiyosu Station, followed by approximately 15 minutes on foot in either case. This is not a station-exit display.

Choose the railway that best matches your hotel and onward journey. The Nagoya transport guide explains the distinction between the subway, JR and Meitetsu; a city subway day pass should not be assumed to cover every suburban line.

Drivers should use the designated free Kiyosu Park or castle parking areas. Do not park on neighbouring streets.

Make it the main early-evening stop

As an editorial estimate, allow roughly 60–90 minutes for the lights, a walk and a projection cycle. Add time for the keep, food or market browsing. Eat before the 20:00 stall finish rather than assuming food continues until the lights switch off at 21:00.

You can return to the station-area displays using the Nagoya illumination guide, but there is little benefit in racing to another distant suburban venue the same night. A convenient Nagoya hotel area keeps the return manageable.

If Inuyama is also in your plans, treat the Nagoya–Inuyama journey as a separate castle-town outing. Kiyosu and Inuyama are different destinations, not interchangeable stops because both involve castles near Nagoya.

Frequently asked questions

Must I buy a castle ticket to see the lights?

No. Outdoor illumination viewing is free. Entering the keep costs extra.

Are the lights closed on Mondays?

The illumination is listed daily. The keep, Furusato no Yakata and food trucks have separate Monday-related exclusions.

Is the mini market open every day?

No. It is scheduled on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

How far is the venue from the station?

Both JR Kiyosu and Meitetsu Shin-Kiyosu involve an approximately 15-minute walk. Include the return walk in your plan.

Is there only one projection show?

No. It is scheduled about every 20 minutes between 17:00 and 21:00, unlike the one-off opening ceremony.
