Getting around Nagoya: start with the subway and an IC card

Nagoya is easier to navigate when you separate city sightseeing from airport and regional travel. The subway reaches Sakae, Osu, Nagoya Castle and the Atsuta area; Meitetsu connects the airport; the Aonami Line serves LEGOLAND; and Linimo takes you to Ghibli Park. These are different networks, so choose a route before buying a pass.

For most first visits, use an existing Suica, ICOCA, TOICA or manaca card for individual journeys, then buy a municipal pass only on a busy sightseeing day. The Nagoya travel guide and Nagoya accommodation guide help match your base to your plans. These linked guides offer more planning detail.

Nagoya Station, Sakae and Kanayama: three useful bases

Nagoya Station is the main hub for Shinkansen trains, regional JR services, Meitetsu, Kintetsu, the subway and Aonami. Their platforms are not interchangeable: JR Nagoya, Meitetsu Nagoya and Kintetsu Nagoya have separate entrances and ticket gates. As a planning allowance, leave 10–20 extra minutes for an unfamiliar transfer with luggage rather than relying on the train-to-train time alone.

Sakae works well for shopping, restaurants, Oasis 21 and Hisaya-odori. Nearby Fushimi is useful for both the Higashiyama and Tsurumai lines. If your days are mostly local, either can be more convenient than returning to Nagoya Station every evening.

Kanayama combines Meitetsu airport trains, JR and the Meijo/Meiko subway lines. It is a practical base for the airport, Atsuta Shrine and Nagoya Port. A hotel near Kanayama can remove an unnecessary change at Nagoya Station.

Sponsored attraction choices: Nagoya Sword World, Nagoya Castle and LEGOLAND are separate visits with separate ticket conditions. LEGOLAND also needs a journey to the port area. Check dates and age categories before choosing; these are not Meitetsu airport tickets.

Which transport should you use?

Option Best use Main trade-off
Subway + IC card Most city sightseeing, including Sakae, Osu and Nagoya Castle Easy for mixed plans, but fares add up on busy days
City bus The last stretch beyond a subway station Wider coverage, with traffic and stop-finding to consider
Me~guru sightseeing bus Castle and museum visits along its route Useful stops, but fewer departures and a weekly non-operating day
Meitetsu Centrair airport, Inuyama and other regional trips Not included in municipal subway passes
Aonami Line Kinjofuto for LEGOLAND and the railway museum Separate fare from the subway
Higashiyama Line + Linimo Ghibli Park via Fujigaoka One change and separate Linimo fare
Private transfer Airport arrival with several bags or a group Door-to-door convenience at a higher cost

There is no need to find one ticket covering every journey. A city pass plus a separate airport ticket is often a better fit than a broad regional pass. On a day with only one or two short rides, pay as you go.

Subway lines, fares and IC cards

Nagoya has six subway lines: Higashiyama, Meijo, Meiko, Tsurumai, Sakura-dori and Kamiiida. Most first-time visitors use Higashiyama for Nagoya–Fushimi–Sakae–Fujigaoka and Meijo for Sakae, Nagoya Castle, Kanayama and the Atsuta area. Tsurumai is useful for Osu Kannon; Meiko runs towards Nagoya Port.

Adult single fares are ¥210, ¥240, ¥270, ¥310 or ¥340 according to distance. Major interoperable transport IC cards work on the subway, so you normally do not need a new manaca if you already have Suica or ICOCA. Tap in and out with the same card and keep enough balance for your journey. Interoperability does not turn the card into a rail pass or include limited-express supplements.

Use the official multilingual bus and subway guide with route maps to check line colours and interchange stations. When arriving from Tokyo by Shinkansen, the Tokyo planning guide can help you choose between boarding at Tokyo or Shinagawa before continuing to Nagoya.

Can you tap a credit card?

Bank-card tapping began across Nagoya subway stations on 3 September 2026. Use a gate with the appropriate card reader; some entrances still lack one, so ask station staff if necessary. Each traveler needs their own supported card or device, and must use the same physical card or device at entry and exit.

This service charges adult ordinary fares, without child fares or transfer discounts. It cannot be combined with a subway 24-hour ticket. Meitetsu support is limited to designated stations, so do not assume a through-train journey is covered just because it begins on the subway. An IC card remains the simpler choice for mixed transport and child fares. Check the official contactless guide for eligible stations and cards.

City buses and the Me~guru sightseeing bus

A normal city-bus ride costs ¥210 for an adult; special express and late-night services can have supplements. Use the subway for longer city crossings and a bus where it removes a long walk. Leave more margin before timed bookings because traffic can affect arrival times.

Me~guru links Nagoya Station with attractions such as the Toyota Commemorative Museum, Nagoya Castle and Tokugawa Garden. Its adult single fare is ¥210 and the dedicated day ticket is ¥500, making three rides cheaper than three separate fares. The municipal bus/subway day ticket and Donichi Eco Kippu also cover Me~guru, so avoid buying a second overlapping pass.

It normally runs Tuesday–Sunday; when Monday is a holiday, the non-operating day moves to the next weekday. Check year-end dates too. The dedicated pass also covers C-758 on days when Me~guru operates, but is not an unlimited subway pass. Check the official route and boarding map before planning museum visits; a service using a shortened route may not stop everywhere.

Centrair airport to Nagoya: train, bus or transfer?

Option Journey and adult fare Choose it when
Meitetsu μSKY As fast as about 28 minutes to Meitetsu Nagoya; ¥980 basic fare + ¥450 μticket = ¥1,430 You want an assigned seat and a straightforward rail arrival
Ordinary cars on suitable Meitetsu services Roughly 36–50 minutes depending on train; ¥980 basic fare to Meitetsu Nagoya You prefer a lower price and can travel without a reserved seat
Airport bus to Sakae/Fushimi Published guide time about 55 minutes; ¥2,000 Your hotel is close to a served stop
Private transfer Quote depends on destination, vehicle, date and inclusions Your group values a direct hotel drop-off

Every μSKY seat is a first-class reserved seat, so a basic fare or an IC-card tap alone is insufficient. On other Meitetsu trains, only use the ordinary cars if you have not paid for first-class seating. Compare the exact inclusions of Meitetsu airport tickets, especially whether the offer includes the μticket.

The airport’s published bus directory lists the daytime Meitetsu Bus Center service as suspended; do not plan a Nagoya Station arrival around it. Sakae/Fushimi and the separate late-night/early-flight Nagoya Station West Gate service have different schedules. Check the official airport bus directory for your travel date rather than assuming either operates for every flight.

Terminal 2 arrivals need extra time to reach the Access Plaza rail connection. Account for immigration, baggage collection and terminal walking before choosing a train. For families or multiple large bags, compare a Centrair private airport transfer, checking luggage capacity, child seats and any late-arrival charges.

When Meitetsu, JR and Kintetsu are useful

Meitetsu is important for Centrair, Inuyama and parts of Aichi and Gifu. From Kanayama you can often reach the airport without returning to Nagoya Station. JR serves Nagoya, Kanayama, Tsurumai and Ozone, but its main value for many visitors is onward travel to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Takayama.

Kintetsu is useful for Mie, Ise-Shima and Osaka-Namba. A limited-express ticket is separate from the basic fare. None of these networks becomes part of a Nagoya subway pass, even when a train continues beyond a municipal line without requiring a change. Pay the uncovered section instead of choosing an awkward detour just to use a pass.

LEGOLAND and Ghibli Park use different railways

Aonami Line to LEGOLAND and SCMAGLEV and Railway Park

Take the Aonami Line from Nagoya to Kinjofuto, around 24 minutes and ¥360 one way for an adult, then walk to the attraction. This is a direct rail journey, so most families do not need a tour just to solve the transport. Aonami accepts major interoperable IC cards but is outside the municipal subway-pass network. Follow signs for Aonami at Nagoya Station rather than entering JR or subway gates.

Higashiyama Line and Linimo to Ghibli Park

Take the Higashiyama Line to Fujigaoka, then Linimo to Ai-Chikyuhaku Kinen Koen. Allow roughly an hour or more from central Nagoya including the transfer, then additional walking time to your booked park area. The subway pass ends at Fujigaoka; pay separately for Linimo, which accepts major interoperable IC cards.

Reaching the station is not the same as reaching every Ghibli Park area. Some paths extend a kilometre or more, so preserve a buffer before a timed admission. Read the official park access and walking guide. A Ghibli Park bus tour is an alternative if its date, pickup point and admission package fit your plans; check which park areas are included.

Which Nagoya city pass is worth buying?

Ticket Adult price Validity and useful coverage
Subway 24-Hour Ticket ¥760 Municipal subway, 24 hours after first use
Donichi Eco Kippu ¥620 City buses and subway for one eligible day: weekends, holidays and the 8th of each month
City Bus & Subway 1-Day Ticket ¥870 Both municipal networks for one operating day
City Bus 1-Day Ticket ¥620 City buses; useful for a bus-heavy plan
Me~guru 1-Day Pass ¥500 Sightseeing route bus; C-758 on Me~guru operating days

A 24-hour ticket first used at 14:00 lasts until 14:00 the next day, not indefinitely across two calendar days. A ticket bought from a subway machine must first be used by the last train on the purchase day; advance-use versions are available at staffed sales points. The one-day bus/subway and Donichi tickets instead cover their day of use.

Simple break-even examples make the choice clearer. Three minimum-fare subway rides cost ¥630, just above the ¥620 Donichi ticket. Four minimum-fare rides cost ¥840, above the ¥760 subway ticket. A weekday plan with two ¥210 bus rides and two ¥240 subway rides totals ¥900, just above the ¥870 combined pass. These are illustrative fare calculations, not a promise that your itinerary has those fares.

Municipal tickets do not cover JR, Meitetsu, Aonami or Linimo. Check the official ticket conditions, including special-route exclusions. The discontinued SHORYUDO Nagoya Subway & Bus 1-Day Ticket is different from the regional Shoryudo highway-bus pass.

Regional passes: only for trips beyond Nagoya

Pass Adult price / duration Suitable trip
Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass ¥19,800 / 5 consecutive days Nagoya, Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Hokuriku, continuing towards Kansai on covered routes
Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass ¥24,500 / 5 consecutive days A seasonal journey including the Alpine Route
Ise-Kumano-Wakayama Area Tourist Pass ¥16,500 / 5 consecutive days Ise, Kumano and the Kii Peninsula
Shoryudo Highway Bus Pass Price and duration depend on product Several covered highway-bus journeys through central Japan

Use the official Tourist Pass coverage and purchase rules to check eligibility, reserved-seat limits and excluded trains. Do not treat the first three passes as general Shinkansen or Kintetsu tickets. The Alpine pass has seasonal sales and use dates; winter travel requires a different plan.

A route through Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa may justify a regional pass; a single return trip may not. For a longer trip, compare the Kansai itinerary or Wakayama guide. A bus pass does not guarantee a seat on a reservation-required departure.

Useful attraction routes from each area

Destination Practical route or station Watch for
Nagoya Castle Meijo Line to Nagoyajo; from Nagoya use Sakura-dori and change at Hisaya-odori Use the castle entrance suitable for your visit
Sakae / Oasis 21 Higashiyama Line to Sakae Choose the correct exit for your destination
Osu Kannon Tsurumai Line to Osu Kannon Kamimaezu works for the other side of the shopping area
Atsuta Shrine Meitetsu Jingu-mae, or subway Atsuta-jingu Nishi / Atsuta-jingu Temmacho Meitetsu is separate from municipal passes
Nagoya Port Aquarium Meiko Line to Nagoyako, often via Kanayama Check the train destination; Meijo and Meiko are different routes
LEGOLAND Aonami to Kinjofuto Separate fare and a walk after the train
Ghibli Park Higashiyama to Fujigaoka, then Linimo Allow walking time inside the wider park

From Fushimi, Higashiyama and Tsurumai cover many city plans; from Osu, use Tsurumai or Meijo at Kamimaezu. From Kanayama, Meitetsu and Meiko can be more useful than repeatedly routing through Nagoya Station.

Sponsored tour choices: a driver-only charter is not necessarily a guided tour. Check the actual route, language, meeting point, luggage and passenger capacity, child seats, service hours and extra charges. Shore excursions need to fit the ship schedule; a day tour is not automatically an airport transfer.

A practical one-day city itinerary

Approximate time Plan
09:00 Leave Nagoya Station for Nagoya Castle by subway
09:30–11:00 Castle visit and surrounding grounds
11:15–12:30 Sakae, Oasis 21 and Hisaya-odori
12:45–14:45 Lunch and shopping in Osu
15:15–16:30 Atsuta Shrine
After 17:00 Dinner near Sakae or Nagoya Station

These are planning windows, not a timetable. On an eligible day, Donichi Eco Kippu is a good comparison; otherwise total the fares or consider the subway 24-hour ticket if you will use it again the following morning. Keep Ghibli Park and LEGOLAND on separate days instead of adding them to this already full route.

Day trips, driving and private charters

Give Ghibli Park a full day and arrange admission first. LEGOLAND is straightforward by Aonami and can fill most of a day with the Kinjofuto area. Takayama and Shirakawa-go involve much longer return travel; staying overnight gives more time on the ground, especially if you will continue to Kanazawa.

For a group combining Inuyama, Ena or rural stops, compare a Nagoya private charter against rail and bus. Confirm what can realistically fit in the booked hours. Central Nagoya rarely needs a rental car: parking, congestion and urban driving add work without improving the main sightseeing routes.

Traveling with children, limited mobility or large bags

Choose a hotel near a useful station and favor a direct train over a marginally faster multi-change route. An accessible exit may be farther from the attraction than the nearest staircase. Check station layouts and allow another 10–15 minutes for lifts and unfamiliar interchanges; wheelchair users should ask the operator about assistance for the actual route.

μSKY’s assigned seats can make airport travel easier, but compare the full walk to your hotel too. Store bags at your hotel where possible; large station lockers can fill. Avoid commuter peaks if you can, and do not block doors or wheelchair spaces with luggage.

On the Tokaido Shinkansen, baggage with combined dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires an appropriate reserved seat with an oversized-baggage area. Bags over 250 cm cannot be carried under the ordinary allowance. Handle this when booking rather than assuming the space behind the last row is unreserved storage.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Allowing only a few minutes between JR, Meitetsu and Kintetsu at Nagoya Station
  • Using a subway pass for Aonami, Linimo or airport trains
  • Assuming a daytime airport bus serves Nagoya Station without checking its current timetable
  • Building a Monday museum plan around Me~guru
  • Taking a long JR detour just because you own a regional rail pass
  • Putting LEGOLAND and Ghibli Park into the same day
  • Tapping a bank card for a child journey and expecting the child fare

Nagoya transport FAQ

Do I need to buy manaca if I have Suica or ICOCA?

Usually not. Major interoperable IC cards cover the subway and many local rail journeys. Check a particular bus or special service separately.

What is the simplest ticket choice for a weekend?

For several municipal rides, compare the ¥620 Donichi Eco Kippu. For only one or two rides, individual fares usually make more sense.

Which pass should I use on a weekday?

The ¥760 subway 24-hour ticket suits subway-heavy travel; the ¥870 combined day ticket suits a busy day using both city buses and subway. Add your actual fares before deciding.

Is μSKY compulsory from Centrair?

No. Ordinary cars on suitable Meitetsu trains avoid the ¥450 seat supplement. μSKY’s advantage is a reserved seat and a fast journey, not exclusive access to central Nagoya.

Does the subway pass reach Ghibli Park or LEGOLAND?

No. Pay for Linimo beyond Fujigaoka or the Aonami Line to Kinjofuto separately.

Is a JR Pass useful just for Nagoya?

Not usually. Most visitor routes use the subway. Regional passes should be evaluated against a separate, longer-distance itinerary.

Where should I stay for convenient transport?

Nagoya Station suits Shinkansen and regional journeys, Sakae suits central sightseeing, and Kanayama combines airport and southern-city access.

The easiest Nagoya transport plan

Start with the subway and an IC card, add a municipal pass only for the days that justify it, and buy airport or out-of-town transport separately. Use Meitetsu for Centrair, Aonami for LEGOLAND and Linimo for Ghibli Park. This keeps the ticket choice aligned with your plans rather than making the pass dictate the trip.
