Nagasaki Lantern Festival 2027 is scheduled for February 5–21, a 17-day period. Keep at least one full evening in Nagasaki if the festival is central to your Kyushu trip. Two nights offer a more comfortable balance of daytime sightseeing, lantern walks and weather flexibility.
The 2027 Emperor Parades are announced for February 13 and 20, with Mazu processions on February 7 and 14. Daily lighting hours, precise procession times and routes still need the detailed notice. Use the confirmed dates to choose a stay, then add the actual timetable.

Choose lantern viewing or a particular performance
The city’s date announcement specifies February 5–21. Lunar New Year’s Day falls on February 6 in 2027, so the announced festival begins one day earlier. Use the event dates rather than deriving them from the lunar calendar.
If your priority is an evening walk, choose a day when you can stay without rushing. For the Emperor Parade, choose February 13 or 20; for a Mazu procession, choose February 7 or 14. Before booking non-refundable transport, check the eventual start time and route so that the right date does not become the wrong arrival time.
Understand the city in two sections
Shinchi Chinatown and neighboring Minato Park are the natural starting points for orientation. Locate tram stops, restaurants and street entrances during daylight, then use the year-specific venue map for the evening.
Hamamachi, the Nakashima River and Meganebashi provide another useful central-city walking area. These are geographical landmarks for planning, not a claim that every place already has a confirmed 2027 programme or identical lighting hours.
Once the official map is available, connect only the sections you can comfortably walk. There is no need to visit every venue on a first evening. Time for photographs and indoor breaks matters more than the shortest line between points.
Trams and the final walk

The city tourism site describes the ordinary route from Nagasaki-ekimae by tram toward Sofukuji, getting off at Shinchi Chinatown. Festival diversions, extra services and queues require a separate current check.
Allow time from JR platforms to the tram stop and from the tram to the actual viewing area. Drop large luggage at the hotel before entering crowded streets rather than searching for storage while sightseeing.
Choose the return route according to the hotel entrance. “Central Nagasaki” covers different neighborhoods, and slopes, crossings and crowds can make a short map distance less convenient than expected.
One night or two?
For one night, arrive during the afternoon, leave luggage, orient yourself and eat early. Spend the evening in one main area, adding another only if energy allows. Use the following day for ordinary city sights instead of forcing a late return to Fukuoka.
For two nights, give the first evening to the Chinatown area and use the second for another section after daytime sightseeing. Anchor the plan to the announced procession dates if one is a priority, then arrange other sights around its detailed timetable.
Huis Ten Bosch is a separate destination, not a nearby downtown stop. Give its evening entertainment a different night rather than trying to make two night-view destinations fit the same day.
Where to stay
The station area suits rail arrivals, substantial luggage and early onward journeys. Shinchi Chinatown and Hamamachi suit travelers prioritizing downtown meals and evening walks. Compare the real route from each hotel entrance with your plans.
The Nagasaki accommodation guide helps compare those areas. With children or older travelers, being able to return for a rest may matter more than a room view. Do not assume a “view room” overlooks festival lanterns.
Compare the same occupancy, bedding, meals and cancellation deadline. A festival-wide date range is not a guarantee that a specific parade happens during your stay.
Photography and bad-weather plans
Keep narrow junctions clear and avoid lining up a large group for photographs in the pedestrian flow. Respect worship spaces and do not touch lanterns, wiring or installations.
In rain, shorten outdoor sections and add indoor meals or breaks. Check the day’s announcements for performances. Stay on safe paths by the river rather than approaching slippery edges for reflections, and bring warm layers for the evening.
Common questions
Does the event start on February 6?
The announced 2027 start is February 5. Do not substitute Lunar New Year’s Day for the actual festival opening date.
Is the imperial parade held daily?
The Emperor Parades are scheduled for February 13 and 20; the Mazu processions for February 7 and 14. They are not daily. Start times and routes still need a separate check.
Is there a festival-wide ticket?
Do not treat a general transport or attraction pass as an all-area festival ticket. Transport, dining, individual paid facilities and special experiences have separate conditions.
