Otagawa Winter Illumination connects event plazas on both sides of a Meitetsu station. It can be a useful evening stop for a Nagoya-based traveller already heading towards the Chita area: the last stage does not require a rural bus, and the visit can stay short.

Tokai City’s tourism association lists December 1, 2026–January 11, 2027, with lighting planned for 17:00–23:00. Detailed seasonal designs and programming still need their own announcement. Last season’s large symbolic tree and starry setting are historical examples, not confirmed installations for the new edition.

What has been announced for this season?

The tourism association’s current notice, dated July 15, 2026, is primarily a sponsorship appeal but explicitly includes the event dates, plazas and planned hours. Sponsorship amounts in that notice are not visitor ticket prices.

Current advance information 2026–27 arrangement
Dates December 1, 2026–January 11, 2027
Lighting 17:00–23:00, planned
Location Otagawa Station event plazas, including Ooyane Hiroba and Donden Hiroba
Detailed theme and performances Separate programme information still required

The previous edition ran December 1, 2025–January 12, 2026. This season is scheduled to finish on January 11, so the shared December 1 start is not a reason to reuse last year’s final date.

Treat the two plazas as distinct stops

The tourism association’s event description explains that the yearly theme links spaces on the station’s east and west sides. On a first visit, do not assume the first illuminated plaza is the whole event. Consult the current map before deciding whether to continue to the other side.

The 2025–26 Stardust Stellar Symphony programme featured a large symbolic tree, starry illumination and light-and-sound effects at Ooyane Hiroba, with an original photo setting at Donden Hiroba. That is an account of the previous design. It explains the different roles the spaces can play without promising an identical repeat.

Your interest What to prioritise
The overall atmosphere A wider view of the plaza rather than only close-up bulbs
A portrait with a large installation The new map and actual designated photo setting
A light-and-sound performance The new show timetable, not merely general lighting hours
A casual stop on the way back One or two plazas that fit the return route

The former opening programme also included performances and food trucks. An opening-day programme is not evidence of a daily Christmas market. Check the specific date before relying on trucks as your evening meal.

Rail access and luggage need a little thought

The destination is Otagawa Station in Tokai City, Aichi. Meitetsu identifies it as the connection between the Kowa and Tokoname lines, and the event plazas are immediately around the station. Confirm whether your particular service stops and whether a transfer is required; an airport-direction train is not automatically the right choice.

The Nagoya transport guide helps with railway and subway connections. On an airport day, settle the main journey using the Chubu Airport–Nagoya guide first. Do not build a luggage-heavy stop around an assumption that an empty station locker will be available.

For a departure-day visit, the flight’s timing takes priority. Illumination is not a reason to reduce airport check-in margins. A short stop is worthwhile only when train times, luggage and the remaining journey make it genuinely relaxed.

Timing the walk and dinner

Allow approximately 30–60 minutes for two plazas and photographs as a planning estimate. Add any waiting time once a detailed show schedule appears. Earlier evening may suit families; photographers can put dinner before or after the walk without turning every pause into a long outdoor wait.

If eating in Nagoya first, include the return railway journey rather than using the planned 23:00 switch-off as permission to start indefinitely late. The Nagoya food guide and hotel-area guide can help keep dinner and the eventual return convenient.

Otagawa offers an urban-plaza contrast to a large light garden. If you would rather avoid another train trip, the Nagoya illumination guide can help choose a central alternative. More stops are not automatically a better evening.

Frequently asked questions

When is the new edition?

The association lists December 1, 2026–January 11, 2027, with lighting planned for 17:00–23:00.

Is last year’s large tree guaranteed to return?

No. The large tree belonged to the previous edition; the new design is still pending.

Are Ooyane Hiroba and Donden Hiroba one plaza?

No. They are different spaces within the station-area event. Use the current map to connect them.

Are food trucks and performances available every evening?

Do not assume so. The previous opening-day programme is not a season-long trading schedule.

Can I stop between the airport and Nagoya?

Only if the actual trains, luggage arrangements and flight timing make sense. Preserve your airport margin rather than forcing a sightseeing stop.
