Takamatsu Airport Transport: The Bus Is the Default
Takamatsu Airport has no JR or private railway station. For most independent travellers, the airport limousine bus is the practical way into the city. It runs past several useful hotel districts before reaching Takamatsu Station and the port, so you do not always need to ride to the terminus.
For a hotel near JR Takamatsu Station or the ferry terminal, allow around 40–45 minutes on the Kotoden limousine bus. The adult fare is ¥1,300 following the October 1, 2026 fare revision. Kawaramachi and Ritsurin Park are earlier stops and cost ¥1,000. A taxi or private airport transfer becomes more attractive when several people share, you have substantial luggage, or the hotel is far from a bus stop.
If your first night is in Kotohira, Sakaide, Utazu or Marugame, check the direct airport buses first. Travelling through central Takamatsu can add an unnecessary train connection. The Takamatsu travel guide can help you choose a base before deciding on transport.
Quick Comparison: Which Route Should You Choose?
| Option | Best for | Why choose it? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kotoden airport limousine | Takamatsu Station, port, Kawaramachi or Ritsurin hotels | Direct stops in the main hotel districts; luggage hold | Road traffic and flight-linked timetable |
| Kotohira airport bus | A first night in Kotohira | Avoids going through Takamatsu | Fewer departures to fit your flight |
| Kotosan bus via Sakaide | Sakaide, Utazu and Marugame | No luggage transfer to a train | Longer ride to the western end of the route |
| Taxi | Groups, late arrivals, hotels away from stops | Door-to-door journey | Higher fare; confirm quote or meter conditions |
| Prebooked private transfer | Families or groups wanting arrangements settled in advance | Vehicle and pickup agreed beforehand | Capacity, waiting and cancellation conditions matter |
| Rental car | Rural Kagawa and a wider Shikoku itinerary | Flexible access to dispersed sights | Parking, insurance and driving responsibilities |
For a city stay, begin with the bus stop nearest your hotel. The real comparison is the whole journey, including the walk after getting off, rather than just the airport-to-station fare.
Kotoden Limousine Bus to Central Takamatsu
Board the city-bound Kotoden limousine bus at airport stand 2. Useful stops include Youme Town Takamatsu, Ritsurin Koenmae, Kawaramachi, Kenchodori Chuo-koenmae, Hyogomachi, Takamatsu Chikko and Takamatsu Station or the ferry terminal. The following adult fares reflect the October 1, 2026 revision; child fares are half.
| Stop | Approximate ride | Adult fare | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youme Town Takamatsu | 19 minutes | ¥1,000 | Southern-city accommodation and shopping |
| Ritsurin Koenmae | 23 minutes | ¥1,000 | Ritsurin Park area hotels |
| Kawaramachi | 30 minutes | ¥1,000 | Shopping arcades and Kotoden connections |
| Kenchodori Chuo-koenmae | 34 minutes | ¥1,000 | Central Park and central shopping streets |
| Hyogomachi | 37 minutes | ¥1,300 | Northern shopping streets |
| Takamatsu Chikko | 40 minutes | ¥1,300 | Kotoden station and port area |
| JR Takamatsu Station / ferry terminal | About 45 minutes | ¥1,300 | JR trains, ferries and station hotels |
The operator gives about 40 minutes for the station route, while the airport’s stop table gives about 45 minutes. Use 40–45 minutes as a planning range, then allow separately for waiting, traffic and walking. A ferry or reserved train should not be booked as a tight connection based on the quickest figure.
Services are scheduled around flights: the operator normally plans departures roughly 15 minutes after domestic arrivals and 45 minutes after international arrivals, adjusting for delayed flights. This does not remove the need to check the actual bus available after immigration and baggage reclaim. Timetables change with airline schedules.
Seats are unreserved. Buy a ticket at the airport vending machine, or follow the operator’s rules for paying when getting off with cash, an accepted transport IC card or supported contactless credit/debit card. Small suitcases stay with you; larger cases can use the underfloor hold. Keep valuables in your hand luggage.
Open the official fare table and individual stop maps and the current timetable and airport boarding diagram. Some airport-bound departures do not pass through Kawaramachi, so check your return journey separately.
Going Straight to Kotohira
If your first night is near Kotohira Station, Kotohira Onsen or Kotohira-gu, the direct airport bus is usually easier to understand than going to Takamatsu and changing to JR or Kotoden. Kinku Bus leaves from airport stand 1. The airport lists approximately 48 minutes and ¥2,000 to JR Kotohira Station.
The benefit is avoiding a luggage transfer, not a guarantee that every departure beats every rail connection. Compare the bus timetable with your flight before booking a hotel that assumes a convenient arrival. A long wait after landing can change the decision.
From the station, check the walk or taxi ride to your accommodation. A hotel described as being in the Kotohira area may not be immediately beside the bus stop. The airport’s destination and boarding guide links to the current Kotohira operator timetable.
Sakaide, Utazu and Marugame Airport Buses
Kotosan’s airport service via Ayagawa and Sakaide leaves from stand 4. It is useful when your hotel is already in western Kagawa, saving the detour through Takamatsu Station.
| Destination | Planning time | Adult fare |
|---|---|---|
| Ayagawa Station | About 20 minutes | ¥600 |
| Sakaide Station | About 50 minutes | ¥1,200 |
| Utazu Station south exit | About 60–65 minutes | ¥1,300 |
| Central Marugame / Marugame Station | About 75–80 minutes | ¥1,400 |
| Okura Hotel Marugame | About 85–90 minutes | ¥1,500 |
The airport overview rounds Marugame to about 75 minutes; many current operator departures take 78 minutes. Check the Kotosan timetable, route map and stop guide for your date. This service does not take advance reservations. Not every departure serves the same final stops, and major flight delays can exceed the operator’s waiting allowance.
Do not confuse this with a bus calling at Kosoku Marugame or Kosoku Zentsuji, which are highway stops rather than city-centre railway stations. The airport lists a separate Seisan Kanko route from stand 0 with its own reservation rules. Kotosan’s separate Marugame–Zentsuji variant is currently suspended; that does not mean its operating Marugame–Sakaide route is suspended too.
Taxis: Useful for Groups and Late Arrivals
The airport’s reference taxi fares start at approximately ¥6,300 to JR Takamatsu Station, ¥6,000 to Kawaramachi and ¥5,400 to the east entrance of Ritsurin Park. These are estimates rather than a guaranteed meter total; traffic, route and the precise destination affect the charge.
A separate fixed-fare arrangement applies to specified central-city zones: currently ¥5,200, ¥5,800 or ¥6,000 in ordinary hours, depending on the zone. It must be reserved and agreed in advance. You cannot board an ordinary taxi and then demand the fixed fare. Late-night/early-morning amounts differ; check the official taxi zone map and conditions.
For four adults, the ¥1,300 city bus totals ¥5,200 before any local connection. That makes a taxi quote worth comparing, particularly if the hotel is away from the route. Luggage capacity still matters, and a larger vehicle may cost more. The airport recommends advance taxi reservations for arrivals after 20:00.
Prebooked Private Transfers
A private airport transfer suits families, older relatives and groups that want the vehicle size and pickup settled before flying. Provide the actual flight, accommodation address, passenger count and luggage dimensions when comparing options.
Check whether the booking includes waiting after a delayed flight, child seats, the correct pickup terminal and the entire destination area. Do not choose the smallest vehicle solely because its nominal passenger count matches your group. Strollers and several large cases can make that impractical.
The existing Takamatsu Airport transfer option is a place to compare the current vehicle and service conditions. It is a different product from a sightseeing charter.
When Renting a Car Is Worthwhile
A car is rarely necessary for a stay centred on Takamatsu Station, the shopping arcades, Ritsurin Park and passenger-ferry trips. Hotel parking and finding spaces can add cost without saving much time.
Driving becomes more useful for dispersed places such as Takaya Shrine, Chichibugahama, rural udon shops, Zentsuji, Iya and Oboke. Airport rental desks and company shuttles make collection practical, but confirm the specific company’s hours and pickup procedure. Compare Takamatsu rental-car options by vehicle capacity, insurance and return arrangements, not just the headline daily rate.
If you want to link scattered sights without driving, a Takamatsu sightseeing charter may suit the itinerary. Confirm its pickup area and actual route; do not assume airport transfer is included.
Airport and Rail Passes: Important October 2026 Changes
For an airport return journey and a light city stay, ordinary tickets may be enough. The airport bus is not included in the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass, and older guides may describe passes or ferry benefits that are no longer sold on the same terms.
| Product | Current position | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rail & Limousine Pass | ¥4,400; use within one week of purchase | Two eligible Kotoden bus rides plus two Kotoden railway day tickets |
| KAGAWA Mini Rail & Ferry Pass | Sales ended September 30, 2026 | Not a current purchase option; existing holders must check their ticket conditions |
| ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass | New issues from October 1: 3 days ¥12,000 or 7 days ¥20,000 | Several eligible rail journeys around Shikoku; no airport buses |
Rail & Limousine Pass
This airport-only package contains two Kotoden airport-direction bus vouchers and two Kotoden railway one-day tickets. It costs ¥4,400 and is valid for one week from purchase. The bus voucher conditions specify the eligible Kotoden airport limousine and Fuseishi–airport Shionoe-line service; it is not a ticket for every airport operator.
For a Takamatsu Station return, ordinary airport buses total ¥2,600, leaving ¥1,800 of the package price to justify through the two railway days. If you only walk around the station and port, separate tickets are likely simpler. Use the official package details to check the purchase location and current conditions.
KAGAWA Mini Rail & Ferry Pass Has Ended New Sales
Do not plan a new trip around buying the former ¥6,000 two-day KAGAWA Mini Rail & Ferry Pass. JR Shikoku ended sales on September 30, 2026. It previously bundled specified Kagawa railways with the Takamatsu–Tonosho ferry and Shodoshima Olive Bus, but it was never an airport-limousine pass.
If you already purchased one, follow the conditions and validity of your actual ticket or exchange order and contact the seller about any uncertainty. New travellers should price their Kotoden, JR, ferry and island-bus journeys separately or compare current packages for the routes they will use.
ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass: New Tickets Have Different Benefits
For passes issued on or after October 1, 2026, the available editions are three days at ¥12,000 and seven days at ¥20,000 for adults. Four- and five-day editions have ended. New tickets no longer include Shodoshima Ferry or Shodoshima Olive Bus. Passes purchased by September 30 retain those older benefits under their applicable conditions.
The pass is for qualifying foreign visitors with Temporary Visitor status. It covers specified Shikoku railways and trams, not the airport limousine; Iyo Railway is not in the current coverage. It makes more sense for a route involving several longer rail journeys, such as Takamatsu, Tokushima and Kochi, than for Takamatsu and Kotohira alone. Read the official dated change notice and coverage before choosing the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass booking option.
For an autumn itinerary, the Shikoku autumn-leaves guide helps decide which towns you actually need to connect before buying a pass.
Hotel Districts and Onward Connections
Stay near Takamatsu Station or the port for JR departures and island ferries. Kawaramachi is convenient for the shopping arcades, restaurants and Kotoden lines; get off the airport bus there rather than riding to the station and returning. Ritsurin-area hotels can use Ritsurin Koenmae directly.
If your first accommodation is in Kotohira, Sakaide, Utazu or Marugame, the direct airport route may be more useful than a central Takamatsu base. Compare the final walk as well as the headline journey time.
Takamatsu Port, Naoshima and Shodoshima
JR Takamatsu Station, Takamatsu Chikko and the port are close enough to connect on foot, but individual ferry berths are distinct. After the airport bus, allow time to find the correct terminal, buy or collect tickets and board. International arrivals also need time for entry procedures and baggage reclaim.
Use the Naoshima transport guide and Shodoshima transport guide for the sea crossing and onward island transport. Do not assume a rail pass purchased now includes those ferries.
The Setouchi hotel-area comparison and Shodoshima accommodation guide can help you decide whether to sleep on an island. A late flight is often easier to pair with a night in Takamatsu and a ferry the following morning.
Kawaramachi and Ritsurin Park
Kawaramachi is a practical base for shopping and restaurant evenings, while Ritsurin Park works well as a relaxed sightseeing block. Store your bags before visiting the garden. Being close to a sightseeing entrance is less useful on arrival if your hotel still requires a long walk from the bus stop.
A Relaxed Arrival-Day Plan
With a morning flight, take the bus to the stop nearest your hotel and leave your luggage. Have udon for lunch, spend the afternoon at Ritsurin Park, and finish around Kawaramachi or the central shopping streets. If you still have time and energy, walk around Sunport and the harbour before dinner.
With an afternoon arrival, move the garden to the next day. Avoid combining an international arrival, Kotohira, Chichibugahama, Takaya Shrine and a return to Takamatsu in one rushed afternoon. Rural services are not frequent enough to make missed connections harmless.
If the main objective is Naoshima or Shodoshima, an overnight stay by the port gives you a more comfortable start than trying to catch the final suitable ferry immediately after landing.
Families, Older Travellers and Luggage
For a hotel close to a city-bus stop, the limousine is usually convenient enough for a family. There are no reserved seats to arrange, and large cases can use the hold. The harder part may be the walk from the stop to the hotel, particularly with a stroller or several suitcases.
For wheelchair travel, do not assume an ordinary departure will provide the required vehicle. Kotoden offers a reservation-required lift-equipped arrangement described on its official limousine page; contact the operator in advance about availability. A taxi or private vehicle also needs the right capacity and accessibility confirmed.
For self-drive trips, reserve suitable child seats and include luggage in the vehicle-size decision. A small car advertised for four adults may be unsuitable once two large cases and a stroller are added.
Common Mistakes
- Searching for a train from a nonexistent Takamatsu Airport station.
- Using the old ¥1,000 station fare after the October 2026 increase.
- Going all the way to Takamatsu Station when the hotel is near Kawaramachi.
- Using a months-old bus timetable or assuming the same return stopping pattern.
- Buying the rail pass expecting airport buses or new-ticket Shodoshima benefits.
- Mistaking Kosoku Marugame for JR Marugame Station.
- Adding flight, bus and ferry running times without any waiting or transfer buffer.
Takamatsu Airport Transport FAQ
How long does the bus take to Takamatsu Station?
Allow approximately 40–45 minutes on the bus, plus waiting and any traffic delay. A taxi can be quicker in clear traffic, but the destination and road conditions determine the real saving.
How much is the airport bus?
Since October 1, 2026, the adult fare to Takamatsu Station, Takamatsu Chikko and the ferry terminal is ¥1,300. Kawaramachi and Ritsurin Koenmae cost ¥1,000. Child fares are half.
Do I need to reserve a seat?
The Takamatsu city limousine has unreserved seating. Kotosan’s Sakaide–Marugame service does not accept advance reservations. Other western routes have different rules, so check the specific operator instead of applying one answer to all airport buses.
Can I use Suica or a contactless bank card?
The Kotoden city limousine supports accepted nationwide transport IC cards, cash and supported contactless credit/debit cards. These rules do not automatically apply to the other airport operators.
Can I go directly to Kotohira or Marugame?
Yes. Kotohira uses stand 1 and is approximately 48 minutes/¥2,000. The Kotosan route via Sakaide to central Marugame uses stand 4 and is roughly 75–80 minutes/¥1,400.
What should I do after a late flight?
Check the remaining flight-linked buses and their actual destination stops. If a taxi is your plan, the airport recommends booking in advance for arrivals after 20:00. Do not rely on finding a suitably large vehicle at the last moment.
Do I need a rail pass if I arrive from Kansai and fly home from Takamatsu?
Calculate the whole rail itinerary. A journey through Okayama and other JR destinations may justify comparing the Kansai transport passes. The short airport connection itself is not a reason to buy a large rail pass.
Final Recommendation
For most Takamatsu city stays, choose the Kotoden limousine and get off at the stop nearest the hotel. Use the direct Kotohira or western Kagawa buses when you are staying there, and compare a taxi when several travellers can share or the final walk is inconvenient.
Keep the October 2026 changes in mind: ¥1,300 to the station, ¥4,400 for Rail & Limousine, no new KAGAWA Mini sales, and revised ALL SHIKOKU editions without Shodoshima benefits on new tickets. Select passes around the journeys you will make, then leave enough room for an unhurried arrival.
