Himeji Atarayo Illumination 2026 makes an easy evening finish to a Himeji Castle day trip. The free outdoor event runs from November 20, 2026 to January 11, 2027, with lights planned daily from 17:00 to 22:00. Start on the north side of Himeji Station, follow Otemae Street toward the castle, and decide how much of Sannomaru Square and the Himeyama Park area you want to explore.
This is a walking-based city illumination, with the castle, street trees and park installations forming the main attraction. You do not need a castle admission ticket to enjoy the outdoor event. Allow around two hours for an unhurried first visit, and remember that the approximately 2.5 km event area does not necessarily include your entire walk back to the station or hotel.

Atarayo is an old Japanese expression for a night so beautiful that you wish dawn would wait. The 2026 event brings approximately 510,000 full-colour LEDs together with castle lighting. For visitors, the useful decision is how far to walk and where to turn back, rather than trying to photograph every installation.
Choose a short stroll or a longer castle-area route
45–60 minutes: station and Otemae Street
Choose this shorter plan if dinner is near the station, you are stopping on the way back to Osaka, or someone in your group needs a gentle outing. Walk north from Himeji Station, enjoy the illuminated trees and distant castle view, then turn back when convenient. Reaching the castle entrance is optional. Leave extra time if your group needs more breaks.
90–120 minutes: Otemae Street and Sannomaru Square
For a balanced first visit, continue toward the castle and include the Atarayo no Yumekagami installation in Sannomaru Square. Leave time for photos and breaks. The usual approximately 20-minute walk from the station to the castle is a transport estimate, not a realistic allowance for the full illumination experience.
Two to three hours: add the Himeyama Park area
The Atarayo Mawarimichi section suits visitors who enjoy varied night scenes and do not need to rush for a train. Check the route on the event map before setting off, including the direction back to your hotel or station. The full event area covers roughly 2.5 km, but detours, photography and the return journey can increase the distance you actually walk.
Photo stops: street perspective, castle square and reflections
Otemae Street gives you a clear visual direction toward the castle, framed by illuminated trees. Stay on pavements and designated viewing areas; a symmetrical photograph is never a reason to stand in a traffic lane. Even on the special pedestrian-zone dates, follow the actual closures and crossing instructions.
Near the castle, make Sakuramon Bridge and Sannomaru Square your main stops. The event map also marks the White Heron halo photo spot and the Yumekagami installation. Look at the wider composition before joining a queue for close-up portraits. If travelling with someone, agree where to meet before separating for photographs.
The park section offers white walls, trees, water and light installations, giving a different atmosphere from the station-side street. Clean your phone lens, reduce exposure slightly to retain colour in bright lights, and use existing lighting for portraits. Keep tripods out of walkways and obey any on-site restrictions; handheld photographs are preferable to blocking other visitors.
Getting to Himeji from Osaka or Kobe
JR Special Rapid trains take approximately one hour from Osaka to Himeji and around 40 minutes from Sannomiya. The Sanyo Shinkansen takes approximately 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka, depending on the service. Compare the whole journey from your hotel, including reaching Shin-Osaka and waiting for the train, before choosing a faster train solely on its onboard travel time.
At JR Himeji Station, use the north exit, also called the Himeji Castle Exit, and walk along Otemae Street toward the castle. Sanyo Himeji Station also connects conveniently on foot. The castle is roughly a 20-minute walk from either station, but the illumination begins on the station-side street, so a shorter outing is perfectly possible. Another option is to visit the castle first by daytime bus and walk back through the lights after dark.
Check your return train before starting the walk, especially if connecting toward Kyoto or a private railway line. The lights ending at 22:00 does not mean that staying until then fits your onward journey. Work backward from your train, including the walk to the station, toilets and platform access. Drivers should separately check their car park’s closing time.
A practical castle-and-lights day trip
| Time | Suggested plan | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Morning to early afternoon | Arrive and visit the castle interior | Daytime admission finishes before the illumination |
| Afternoon | Choose Koko-en if time and energy allow; eat and rest | Avoid leaving all food and breaks until after dark |
| Around 16:30 | Return to the street or castle-front area | Sort out layers, bags and phone battery |
| After 17:00 | Walk your chosen route for about 90–120 minutes | Keep flexibility for photos and crowds |
| Evening | Dinner or return train | Leave according to your transport plan |
Regular castle opening is 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:00, and the castle is closed on December 29 and 30. General admission for non-resident adults aged 18 and over is ¥2,500; the castle and Koko-en combination ticket is ¥2,600. These are daytime attraction charges. The free illumination neither includes castle admission nor extends the interior opening hours. Arrive by lunchtime if you want the castle, garden and evening walk in one day.
If your only aim is the illumination, you can arrive in the late afternoon without buying a daytime ticket. Use our Himeji Castle guide for the interior route and ticket choices. For other festive stops along your trip, compare the Japan Christmas markets guide rather than adding an inconvenient cross-city detour.
Children, older travellers and wet-weather planning
Eat something and use the toilets before starting a family walk. Standing still for photographs can feel colder than walking, so bring gloves, scarves and a wind-resistant layer. Children sitting in pushchairs may need extra warmth. Make one short section your essential plan, with the park loop optional, and keep enough energy for the return journey.
For older travellers or wheelchair users, use Otemae Street as the starting route and assess the castle-front approaches on arrival. Do not assume every park path is step-free from a map, or confuse the outdoor route with the steep stairs inside the castle keep. Ask the organiser about a suitable route if you have particular access needs, and avoid taking large suitcases around the whole event area.
In wet weather, follow the day’s announcements and watch for slippery stone surfaces, leaves and waterside paths. Strong wind or persistent rain is a good reason to keep the walk short and move indoors for dinner. Check the event website and illumination map before leaving your accommodation.
Himeji Atarayo FAQ
When does the 2026 event end?
It runs from November 20, 2026 to January 11, 2027. Planned daily lighting hours are 17:00–22:00.
Do I need a Himeji Castle ticket?
No ticket is needed for the free outdoor illumination. A separate ticket is required for the castle’s daytime paid area.
Can I enter the castle keep at night?
Do not treat the illumination as nighttime access to the keep. Regular interior opening ends at 17:00, with last admission at 16:00.
How far is the event from Himeji Station?
The Otemae Street section begins near the station. Walking all the way to the castle usually takes about 20 minutes before allowing for photos.
What happens on December 19 and 20?
The pedestrian-zone Saiun lighting show is scheduled on those two dates. Check the local traffic arrangements and instructions when you arrive.
Is it suitable for young children?
Choose the station-side street or a shorter route including Sannomaru Square. Have food first, dress warmly and allow for breaks and the walk back.
Is Atarayo the Himeji Christmas market?
Atarayo is an illumination event. Any separate Christmas market has its own dates, stalls and food arrangements; the illumination season does not establish market opening dates.
Should I stay overnight?
An overnight stay is optional for a short walk with a suitable return train. It offers more flexibility if you are also visiting the castle by day and photographing the wider park area at night.
