Sendai Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Eight Fee Days and Nishikicho Park Access

Sendai Christmas Market is scheduled for December 4–25, 2026, at Nishikicho Park. Your first decision should be the date: entry is normally free, but a cooperation fee applies on December 11–13, 18–20 and 24–25. Those eight days need separate budget and ticket-rule checks.

The market works well after a day in central Sendai. Browse the wooden stalls, enjoy the Christmas atmosphere and leave time for a warm indoor dinner. It is walkable from JR Sendai Station’s west side, and there is no need to devote an entire day to it.
2026 dates, hours and admission

|---|---|
| Dates | December 4–25, 2026; 22 days scheduled |
| Weekdays | 16:00–22:00 |
| Saturdays | 12:00–22:00 |
| Sundays | 12:00–21:00 |
| Venue | Nishikicho Park |
| Address | Honcho 2-21, Aoba-ku, Sendai |
| Standard admission | Free |
| Cooperation-fee dates | December 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25 |
The official market website lists the fee dates. it does not state the current season’s amount, child eligibility or purchasing method. Check the 2026 ticket announcement before committing to a fee date; a previous year’s price is not a valid current quote.
Free admission does not include food, drinks, mugs or shopping. For a predictable meal budget, eat in town first and choose extras from the actual menus at the venue.
Which day should you choose?
Dates outside the published fee list are December 4–10, 14–17 and 21–23. This grouping is calculated from the official schedule, and any later operating changes should still be checked before travel.
| Your priority | A useful choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A daytime weekend visit without the entry fee | Saturday, December 5 or Sunday, December 6 | Both open at noon and are outside the fee list |
| An easy stop after city sightseeing | A free weekday after 16:00 | No need to rearrange a full day |
| Traveling only on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day | Plan for a fee date | Current ticket and eligibility rules must be checked |
| Visiting after dinner on Sunday | Move the market earlier | Sunday closing is 21:00 |
A fee date is not automatically the best family choice, and a free day is not a promise of an empty park. Consider bedtime, accommodation and return trains alongside the atmosphere you want.
Getting to Nishikicho Park
The organizer’s access page lists these approaches:
| Transport | Stop or exit | Approximate walk |
|---|---|---|
| JR Sendai Station | West Exit | 10 minutes |
| Namboku Subway Line | Kotodai-koen Station, Park Exit 1 | 5 minutes |
| Namboku Subway Line | Hirose-dori Station, East Exit 2 | 5 minutes |
| Machinori Chocotto city-center loop bus | Nishikicho-koen-mae | 1 minute |
| Listed Miyagi Kotsu routes | Honcho 2-chome | 3 minutes |
These are ordinary walking estimates, not travel times from a Shinkansen platform. If you are already on the west side of Sendai Station, walking can avoid going underground for a short subway journey. If your hotel is farther along the Namboku Line, taking the subway may fit better.
With a stroller or wheelchair, verify the elevator route rather than assuming Park Exit 1 or East Exit 2 is step-free. Temporary entry and queue arrangements also need to be followed on the day.
Drivers can consult the Kotodai Park underground parking information linked by the organizer. That is a separate parking facility, not permission to park inside Nishikicho Park or a guarantee that market purchases provide parking discounts.
How long to stay, and an evening that includes a warm break
Allow around 60–90 minutes for a first visit, with extra flexibility for shopping, food or performances. Take an initial circuit before choosing a queue. The stalls and Christmas tree give the visit its shape; there is no need to start by waiting at the first busy stand you see.
A manageable weekday plan is:
- Finish city sightseeing and drop large bags at your hotel
- Visit the market around 16:00–17:30
- Have an indoor dinner around Honcho, Hirose-dori or Sendai Station
- Decide on another walk only if the weather and everyone’s energy allow
On weekends, a visit from noon can replace a long evening spent outdoors. This is an itinerary choice, not a guarantee of lower crowds. For younger children, a reliable seated break is more useful than trying to watch every programme.
For the wider city itinerary, see the Sendai travel guide. Keep the market as one evening component rather than forcing Matsushima, several city attractions and a late train into the same day.
The market and Pageant of Starlight are separate events
Nishikicho Park’s Christmas Market and the illumination on Jozenji-dori are not the same event. If you want both, check the Pageant of Starlight’s own 2026 dates, lighting hours and pedestrian arrangements. The market’s December 4–25 run does not establish the other event’s schedule.
You can also skip the extra walk altogether. A market visit followed by dinner is a complete evening, particularly after a long sightseeing day or in poor weather.
Cold weather, photography and food
Pack insulating layers, a wind-resistant outer layer and comfortable shoes. If rain or snow is forecast, pay particular attention to wet or slippery ground. Do not book expecting a guaranteed snowy Christmas scene; decide your outdoor time using the actual forecast and same-day notices.
For tree photographs, stand where others can still pass. Avoid stepping backward through a crowd while carrying a hot drink. Pack mugs and fragile purchases securely before continuing. With dietary restrictions, ask about ingredients rather than relying on a food’s name to tell you everything it contains.
Do not assume unannounced payment methods, cloakroom services, re-entry conditions or rain-and-snow cancellation thresholds. On a fee date, ask staff about re-entry before leaving for dinner if you hope to return afterward.
Return trains or an overnight stay?
For a day trip, choose the return train first and work backward. The official ten-minute walk to Sendai Station’s West Exit does not include retrieving luggage, buying tickets, passing the gates or reaching the Shinkansen platform. The Tokyo–Sendai transport guide helps compare the wider intercity journey.
An overnight stay offers more flexibility if you want a leisurely dinner or dislike rushing in cold weather. If already staying in Sendai, there is normally no reason to move hotels for the market alone; choose a straightforward route back to your existing base.

Sendai Christmas Market FAQ
Does every weekend require a fee in 2026?
No. The listed fee periods include December 11–13 and 18–20. December 5 and 6 are outside the published fee list.
Are Christmas Eve and Christmas Day free?
No. Both December 24 and 25 require the cooperation fee. Use the 2026 ticket notice for the amount and eligibility rules.
Is Sunday closing also 22:00?
No. Sunday hours are 12:00–21:00, one hour earlier than Saturday and weekday closing.
Is the venue Kotodai Park?
No. The market is at Nishikicho Park. Kotodai-koen is a useful subway station, and the parking facility mentioned by the organizer is a separate location.
Are children exempt from the fee?
the organizer’s main page does not publish this season’s child conditions. Do not apply an old age threshold without checking the new ticket notice.
Can I book a Tokyo-bound train at the market’s closing time?
That leaves no time to reach the platform. Work backward from your actual train and include the walk, luggage retrieval and station navigation.
