Ueno Christmas Advent 2026: Two Venues, Opening Hours and Free Admission

Tokyo Christmas Advent is an easy evening addition to a day around Ueno Park, its museums or Ameyoko. Admission and live performances are free. The detail that needs planning is the two-venue calendar: Hakamagoshi Plaza opens on November 6, while the Shinobazu Pond area starts on November 18, 2026.

For early November, head to the plaza. To see both areas, visit from November 18 onward and put the earlier-closing pond venue first. There is no need to buy a ticket for a differently named Tokyo Christmas event to enter this one.

2026 dates and hours

Venue Dates Opening hours Last food orders
Hakamagoshi Plaza November 6–December 25, 2026 Daily 12:00–23:00 22:30
Shinobazu Pond, Monday–Thursday November 18–December 25, 2026 15:00–22:00 21:30
Shinobazu Pond, Friday–Sunday and Japanese public holidays Same season 12:00–22:00 21:30
Shinobazu opening day, November 18 That day only 17:00–22:00 21:30

Use the official Ueno Christmas Advent page for current operating information. The pond does not open at noon on an ordinary Monday to Thursday, and opening day has its own 17:00 start.

Food, drinks and merchandise are separate purchases. The organizer also asks visitors not to reserve or monopolize seats. Free admission makes it practical to shorten a visit if someone is cold or tired rather than feeling obliged to stay because of a ticket purchase.

Where are the two areas?

Hakamagoshi Plaza is beside the main entrance of Keisei-Ueno Station, below the Saigo Takamori statue. The pond venue is on the Saigo-statue side of Shinobazu Pond. Use the two individual maps on the event page rather than navigating to the middle of Ueno Park or walking around the entire pond looking for stalls.

The venues work well as one visit, but follow signs for the final approach. Published walking times are estimates to the plaza or pond, not a door-to-door allowance that includes finding your exit, queuing or moving through a busy station.

Access by Keisei, JR and subway

Station Plaza Pond direction
Keisei-Ueno About 1 minute About 1 minute toward the pond; continue to the event on the statue side
JR Ueno About 3 minutes About 5 minutes from Shinobazu Exit to the pond
Tokyo Metro Ueno, Ginza/Hibiya lines About 3 minutes About 5 minutes to the pond
Ueno-hirokoji, Ginza Line About 4 minutes About 4 minutes
Ueno-okachimachi, Oedo Line About 5 minutes About 5 minutes

For the pond, the organizer directs JR passengers toward Shinobazu Exit. Museum visitors can approach from inside the park after their daytime visit. With a stroller or wheelchair, check the JR Ueno station layout and accessibility information first instead of assuming the shortest route is step-free.

The area can also suit an arrival-day evening after a flight into Narita, but drop your luggage at the hotel and rest before deciding. Immigration queues and flight delays make an ambitious fixed schedule immediately after landing unwise.

A relaxed afternoon-to-evening plan

When both venues are operating, a useful sequence is:

  • Afternoon: Choose one museum or spend time around Ameyoko
  • Around 16:00: Have a snack and a proper seated break
  • 17:00–18:00: Browse the Shinobazu Pond area
  • After 18:00: Continue to Hakamagoshi Plaza and stay according to the performances and stalls that interest you
  • Finish with dinner around Ueno or return to your hotel

These are suggested travel times, not a performance schedule. Allow around 90 minutes to two hours for both areas. A quick drink and walk can be shorter. Between November 6 and 17, use only the plaza and leave the spare time for dinner.

For a wider neighborhood plan, the Tokyo travel guide explains how to group Ueno with nearby districts. Once the market is your evening highlight, another cross-city illumination trip is optional rather than essential.

Ueno Christmas Advent is a different event from Tokyo Christmas Market

Tokyo Christmas Advent is the event in Ueno Park. Tokyo Christmas Market has its own venues and admission arrangements. If your search leads to Shin-Toyosu, Shiba Park or Onarimon, you are looking at another organizer’s event. The Tokyo Christmas Market guide covers those venues separately.

Choose by the day’s geography and what you actually want to see. Ueno is a flexible free stop for an east-Tokyo day. A particular installation at a different event may justify traveling elsewhere, but its ticket and address do not apply here.

Mugs, food and live music

The organizer’s FAQ says hot drinks are served in mugs that visitors can take home, with paper cups used when mugs have sold out. Bring a suitable bag if you intend to carry one afterward. Check the stall’s actual drink, price and cup arrangement before paying instead of relying on an old menu photograph.

Performances are free to watch, but that does not guarantee a seat. Leave flexible time if you want to listen to music. A performer appearing in an older news post is not evidence that the same show will be held on your 2026 visit date.

For children, prioritize an arrangement that lets you move on when needed. Anyone with dietary restrictions should keep a separate dinner plan rather than relying on a particular stall being suitable.

Rain, crowds and luggage

The event can operate in rain, although it may finish early; severe weather can cause cancellation. Check the same-day announcement, especially before setting out late in wet weather.

Bring a wind-resistant layer for standing by the pond and shoes with grip if paths are wet. Earlier visits may be easier with a stroller, but no blanket guarantee should be assumed for every temporary event route. Ask the organizer about specific access needs before traveling.

Leave suitcases at your accommodation when possible. For station lockers, check the retrieval location and access hours and have a fallback if none are free. A market being close to a station does not make a large bag convenient in food queues.

Going home

JR Ueno, Keisei-Ueno and Tokyo Metro Ueno do not share one entrance. Confirm the line you need before leaving; a station toward Okachimachi may fit your hotel better than retracing your arrival route.

The plaza’s 23:00 closing time is not a promise that your last train or onward connection will still be available. Check the return journey before staying late. Last-order times of 22:30 and 21:30 should be treated as cutoffs, not recommended arrival times.

Ueno Christmas Advent FAQ

Can I visit both venues on November 10?

No. Hakamagoshi Plaza will be open, but the 2026 Shinobazu Pond venue begins on November 18.

What time does the pond open on November 18?

At 17:00. The opening-day exception overrides the ordinary weekday schedule.

Is the live music also free?

Yes. The official FAQ says performances are free to watch, and visitors should not reserve or monopolize seating.

Is anything still open after 22:00?

The pond area closes at 22:00. Hakamagoshi Plaza continues until 23:00, with last food orders at 22:30. Arrive earlier if eating is part of your plan.

Should I cancel immediately if rain is forecast?

Check the organizer’s notice first. Rain does not automatically cancel the event, but early closure and severe-weather cancellation are possible.
