For Osaka and Kyoto New Year transport 2026–2027, the key is a complete event-to-hotel journey, not simply finding one railway described as “all night”. USJ, Kyoto shrine visits and Ise involve different lines. Umeda, Namba and Kyoto Station also create different final connections.

The operators have not yet announced the full December 31, 2026–January 1, 2027 special-service arrangements. Ordinary geography and accommodation advice can be used now; the 2025–2026 services below are explicitly historical reference and cannot be used to board the coming season’s trains. All times are JST.

Five operators, five separate checks

JR West, Keihan, Kintetsu, Hankyu and Osaka Metro are separate systems. JR Osaka, Hankyu Osaka-umeda and the subway’s Umeda stations are not one platform. JR Namba, Osaka-Namba and Osaka Metro Namba are also different boarding points. A linked station on a map does not establish an overnight transfer.

All-night service applies to specified sections; later last trains may stop well before morning; a weekend/holiday timetable is only a calendar category. None means every railway in Kansai operates all night.

Previous 2025–2026 reference: JR West extended only selected sections

The following comes from JR West’s October 31, 2025 official notice for December 31, 2025–January 1, 2026 only. It explicitly said there was no all-night service and no after-last-train extras outside the listed sections. Whether 2026–2027 repeats that approach remains unannounced.

For USJ visitors, the historical lesson is that extra Yumesaki trains did not create an overnight JR journey between Osaka and Kyoto. Service until around 03:00 was also not permission to leave at any hour. Compare the event finish, actual exit and every connection against the new season’s eventual timetable.

Previous 2025–2026 reference: Keihan, Kintetsu and Hankyu differed

Keihan: overnight operation, but not on the Otsu Lines

Keihan’s December 11, 2025 notice set a special timetable from 18:00 on December 31, 2025 to 07:00 on January 1, 2026. During that edition’s 23:00–05:00 period, Main/Oto Line semi-express or local services ran roughly every 15–30 minutes. Nakanoshima, Katano and Uji local services ran roughly every 30–40 minutes after midnight. The Otsu Lines did not operate all night that season.

These are previous-edition facts. The planning lesson is that branches, train types and stops can differ within one company. A Kyoto-to-Osaka return needs the 2026–2027 notice and an actual departure-station-to-destination check.

Kintetsu: historical Ise limited expresses, with separate seat planning

Kintetsu’s November 10, 2025 release announced overnight service on selected routes and Hinotori limited expresses from Osaka-Namba to Isuzugawa on the previous New Year’s morning. Those historical departures were 00:00, 01:00 and 02:00. Limited-express tickets for December 31, 2025–January 4, 2026 went on sale December 1, 2025 at 10:30.

Neither the departure times nor that sale date is a 2027 promise. The example shows why a special train seat may need advance planning. Check the rail fare, limited-express seat, shrine-area bus and return separately. A long-distance train does not establish an onward dawn shuttle.

Hankyu and Osaka Metro: other operators’ decisions do not apply

The joint Hankyu/Nose release of December 3, 2025 explicitly ruled out overnight operation and late-night extensions for 2025–2026. That historical decision does not settle 2026–2027.

Osaka Metro’s previous holiday notice put subway and New Tram services on weekend/holiday timetables from December 27, 2025 to January 4, 2026. Only that calendar arrangement is cited here; a holiday timetable does not establish all-night running. The final 2026–2027 subway leg needs its own current notice.

Match the destination to the accommodation

USJ: Universal City is different from Umeda or Namba

Use USJ’s official access page to locate the park and Universal City approach. For a late stay, compare genuinely walkable nearby rooms, including their real entrance and overnight access. Umeda or Namba accommodation requires checking the connection after the first Yumesaki leg, not just the train out of the park area.

Moving onward to Kyoto after resting is often easier to organise. That is a stamina and risk trade-off, not a claim that night travel is impossible; add it only when the whole current-season connection is verified.

Yasaka: compare Gion and Shijo street routes

Nearby accommodation lets a Yasaka visit anchor a night around Gion and Shijo. Start with the shrine’s official access information and the actual hotel address. Kawaramachi, Gion-shijo and Kyoto Station are different bases, not interchangeable walking distances.

For a Keihan return to Osaka, also check the subway or walk after arriving on the Osaka side. If that last connection fails, the cross-city plan fails too.

Fushimi Inari: two stations and two operators

Fushimi Inari’s official access page places JR Nara Line Inari Station by the approach and Keihan Fushimi-inari around 5 minutes away on foot in ordinary conditions. They are different stations governed by different seasonal announcements. A Kyoto Station base can suit a daytime JR visit; midnight use still needs that season’s service confirmation.

For the shrine visit itself, the Fushimi Inari guide helps you choose how much walking to include; keep that sightseeing choice separate from the overnight train decision.

Ise Jingu is a separate onward destination. An Osaka countdown, Kyoto worship and Ise sunrise do not need to be one night. Every additional city introduces another connection and more fatigue.

Check beyond the major station

Start with the hotel address and work backwards from its final connection. Use JR West timetables, Keihan, Kintetsu, Hankyu or Osaka Metro as appropriate. After midnight, select January 1, 2027 and check the section, direction, stops and train destination.

Allow for dispersal, queues, walking and transfers. If seasonal trains have not loaded in the planner, an ordinary-date result cannot substitute for the holiday notice. Through-lines on a map also do not promise continued overnight through-service.

Practical fallbacks and passes

Leave before the last train, stay nearby, or wait for a confirmed first train at a place that permits waiting. Arrange the fallback before the night; do not assume station halls stay open or taxis are instantly available. Fewer late transfers are particularly useful with children, older companions or large luggage.

Compare passes only after deciding the operators, travel dates and any limited-express or reserved-seat supplements. No pass extends the last train. When 2026–2027 notices are published, recheck the operating sections and final hotel leg before fixing your departure times.
