Shinjuku Minami Lumi works best as part of a shopping day, dinner plan or walk back to a nearby hotel. Its six venues are around the south side of Shinjuku Station, connecting the Suica Penguin Plaza, office buildings, a department store and Southern Terrace. Think of it as a neighbourhood route, not a single gated illumination park.

The two main mistakes are starting on the wrong side of the station and assuming every Christmas tree lasts as long as the overall winter season.

Dates and the Christmas-tree distinction

The event runs from November 11, 2026 to February 14, 2027. The organiser’s announcement gives these general lighting periods, while allowing venue-specific differences:

Period General lighting hours
Opening day, November 11 18:00–24:00
November 12–30 17:00–24:00
December 1–February 14 16:30–24:00

The Christmas trees at JR Minami-Shinjuku Building, JR Shinjuku Miraina Tower and Takashimaya are advertised only through December 25. A January visit may still offer winter lights, but do not expect the complete December Christmas-tree route.

Six venues, different reasons to stop

Venue This season’s focus
Suica Penguin Plaza Hanamichi Gate and penguin photo settings
JR Minami-Shinjuku Building Red-and-gold tree with burgundy ribbon
JR Shinjuku Miraina Tower Classic tree arrangements with natural materials
Takashimaya Times Square Department-store Christmas display
Shinjuku Minds Tower Wish Lantern tree and lantern imagery
Southern Terrace and Odakyu Southern Tower Champagne-gold walkway and changing seasonal displays

Start by choosing three priorities instead of treating all six as compulsory. Penguin Plaza, one tree and a Southern Terrace walk make a coherent first visit. Additional venues are an extension, not six separate journeys across Tokyo.

For photographs, take a wider scene before moving to a simple portrait composition. Building entrances still serve ordinary users; avoid blocking circulation or entering non-public areas for a camera angle.

Start at the right gate

The Suica Penguin Plaza outside JR Shinjuku Station’s New South Gate is a practical starting reference. Do not navigate to the separate Minami-Shinjuku railway station just because the event name includes “Minami.” The East Exit and Kabukicho are also not the starting points for this six-venue route.

Use the JR East station map to identify the New South Gate, platforms and accessible routes. If friends arrive on different railway companies, agree on a specific plaza location rather than simply “the south exit.”

For an arrival-day visit, first compare Narita–Shinjuku or Haneda–Shinjuku access and leave luggage at your accommodation. Station approaches with changing levels and commuter traffic are not ideal for dragging a suitcase between photographs.

Two realistic ways to fit the walk into a day

Available time Suggested plan
Around 30–45 minutes Penguin Plaza plus one tree or a Southern Terrace section
Around 60–90 minutes Choose four to six venues, with time to find your way and photograph

Allow extra time for photographs, crowds and finding the next venue. If you have already spent the day around Shinjuku Gyoen, a food and rest break before the lights may be more enjoyable than walking continuously into the evening.

For travellers staying locally, the Shinjuku hotel-area guide can help make the route part of the return journey. Avoid repeatedly crossing back over the station simply to complete a checklist.

Treat the stamp activity as a bonus

The digital stamp activity runs from November 11 to December 25. Visitors scan venue codes with a smartphone; the announcement offers a penguin notebook to the first 500 people meeting the four-stop condition, while supplies last.

It can provide a playful route for a group that enjoys collecting, but it is not a guaranteed souvenir. If the phone does not work with the system or the allocation has gone, the illumination still stands on its own. A limited gift is not a good reason to turn a relaxed walk into a rushed circuit.

Frequently asked questions

Do all the Christmas trees remain until February?

No. Several named trees finish on December 25, even though the wider winter programme continues.

Must I visit all six locations?

No. Choose according to your dinner location, hotel and favourite display style.

Is the stamp reward guaranteed?

No. It has a limited allocation and is available only while supplies last.

Is this the same as Shinjuku’s East Exit illumination?

No. Minami Lumi is the south-side six-venue programme. Use the event’s venue map and the correct station gate.
