Separate the Sanyo and Sanin corridors
Okayama, Hiroshima and parts of Yamaguchi fit naturally along the Sanyo transport spine, while Tottori and Shimane lie on the Sea of Japan side. Switching repeatedly between both sides on a short trip creates extra transfers and unnecessary hotel changes.
Treat ferries and cycling as part of Setouchi planning
Island travel depends on the specific ferry links, island transport and where you sleep, not just the nearest mainland city. The Shimanami Kaido connects Onomichi and Imabari and can be experienced as a full ride or in selected sections.
Choose Shikoku bases by direction
Takamatsu works well for Kagawa and some Setouchi routes, while Matsuyama suits western Shikoku and Ehime. Tokushima and Kochi open different parts of the island, so a circuit is usually better served by changing bases than returning to one city.

Frequently asked questions
Should I start a first Chugoku-Shikoku trip in Okayama or Hiroshima?
Okayama is useful for Sanyo, Kagawa and some Setouchi connections, while Hiroshima suits western Sanyo and Miyajima-focused plans. Choose the gateway that leads naturally to your next stop.
Can the Sanin coast be done as a day trip from Hiroshima?
Individual long excursions are possible, but Sanin is not simply a nearby extension of Hiroshima. If Tottori or Shimane is a priority, staying locally usually produces a cleaner route.
Can Takamatsu be the only base for Shikoku?
It works well for northeastern Shikoku but becomes inefficient for repeated trips to Matsuyama or Kochi. A multi-direction itinerary usually benefits from moving accommodation.
Do I have to cycle the entire Shimanami Kaido?
No. You can plan a full ride or choose selected sections based on fitness, luggage and onward transport between Onomichi and Imabari.
Can I decide Setouchi island hopping on the day?
It is better to choose the key islands and base first, then check the relevant ferry links. Do not assume every island has a direct or frequent connection to every other island.
