For museums in Tokyo over New Year 2026–2027, January 1 and January 2 are different planning decisions. Tokyo National Museum has announced a January 1 reopening; the Sumida Hokusai Museum reopens on January 2. Sannomaru Shozokan’s holiday closure is followed by a normal Monday closure, so its first practical visit date is January 5 under the published exhibition calendar.

Choose one district for the day: Ueno, Ryogoku or the Imperial Palace area. A museum being open does not mean every gallery is open, or that you can buy the required ticket at the door. All times are Japan Standard Time.

Confirmed museum closures for 2026–2027

Museum Holiday dates What changes your plan
Tokyo National Museum Closed December 26–31, 2026; reopens January 1, 2027 New Year’s Day hours remain to be announced; individual rooms have separate closures
Sumida Hokusai Museum Closed December 27, 2026–January 1, 2027; open January 2 and 3 An exhibition’s overall run does not cancel holiday closures
Sannomaru Shozokan Holiday closure December 28, 2026–January 3, 2027; January 4 is also closed as a Monday Plan from January 5, with an advance date-and-time reservation

These three institutions have their own opening calendars; this is not a citywide opening list. Nearby museums, parks, shops and restaurants follow their own calendars.

Tokyo National Museum: reopening does not mean every room

The museum’s official visiting information confirms January 1, 2027 opening but has not yet specified the hours. Do not apply normal Friday late-opening hours simply because New Year’s Day falls on a Friday. Use the special date’s calendar when it becomes available.

There is another important restriction before Christmas: from December 22 to 25, 2026, only the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures and Kuroda Memorial Hall open. Anyone hoping to browse the Honkan or Toyokan should choose a different date. Maintenance closures in Honkan rooms 4 and 2–3 also extend into January 2027, so reopening is not a promise of access to every display.

Since August 2026, the museum has prohibited suitcases and wheeled cases inside. Security screening takes place at the main gate. If January 1 is your hotel-change day, arrange luggage storage before travelling to Ueno rather than arriving with your case and assuming the museum can hold it.

Sumida Hokusai Museum: reserve Ryogoku for January 2 or 3

The official holiday notice specifically confirms normal opening on January 2 and 3. It also confirms opening on January 11 and closure on January 12, useful if your trip continues into the Coming of Age Day holiday.

A show running from December into February can still close for several days in the middle. Check the actual visit date first, then the exhibition and its admission arrangements. As an itinerary choice, allow an unhurried half-day in the district rather than adding a cross-city museum dash merely to fill the schedule. The time spent inside depends on how closely you want to examine the work.

Sannomaru Shozokan: January 4 is not a reopening day

The official exhibition page for “Beauty Through the Ages: Treasures of the Imperial Collections” lists November 3, 2026–January 24, 2027 as its run. Alongside the December 28–January 3 holiday break, the museum closes on Mondays, except the named holiday exceptions. January 4 is a Monday and is not an exception; January 5 is therefore the first visit date under that calendar.

This exhibition uses advance date-and-time reservations, with no on-site same-day ticket sales. Some visitors eligible for free admission also need reservations. Secure a suitable slot before placing lunch and a palace-area walk around it. Access to the Imperial Palace East Gardens and admission to this exhibition are separate matters: an ordinary palace walk does not provide a museum reservation.

A workable plan by date

  • December 22–25: choose Tokyo National Museum only if the two available buildings match your interests; move a Honkan-focused visit to another day
  • December 28–31: none of these three museums makes a suitable indoor anchor; find another venue with explicit holiday opening information
  • January 1: Tokyo National Museum is a candidate, once its special hours are published; Hokusai and Shozokan are not fallback options
  • January 2–3: choose Ryogoku for Hokusai, or Ueno after checking Tokyo National Museum’s date-specific calendar
  • January 4: normal Monday closures still matter; the end of the holiday period does not mean universal reopening
  • January 5 onwards: check Shozokan reservation availability before arranging the rest of that day

For bad weather, identify another confirmed indoor option in advance, or keep a hotel-rest alternative. Walking to the next museum and hoping it is open is a weak holiday backup. Restaurants within one shopping complex may also use different holiday hours.

Getting to the right entrance

Tokyo National Museum quotes an ordinary walk of about 10 minutes from JR Ueno’s Park Exit or Uguisudani’s South Exit, before queues and security. The Hokusai Museum access page gives about five minutes from Toei Oedo Line Ryogoku Station exit A3, or nine minutes from JR Ryogoku’s East Exit. Select the correct station: these are different arrival points.

For Shozokan, follow the official access and entrance map and allow time to reach the admission point, not merely the palace boundary. Check step-free options separately if travelling with a wheelchair or pushchair; published walking estimates are not accessibility guarantees.

Before leaving, confirm opening and last-entry times, the galleries you want, the exhibition covered by your ticket, and luggage arrangements. Those four checks are more valuable than adding another stop to an already full New Year itinerary.
