For Tokyo New Year transport in 2026–2027, begin with the trip back to your hotel. JR, Tokyo Metro, Toei and private railways make separate decisions. A connection on the daytime map does not establish a connection after midnight, and a station beside the event does not prove trains reach the other end of your journey.
The operators have not yet published the full special-service arrangements for December 31, 2026–January 1, 2027. Plan your return route first, and treat the clearly labelled 2025–2026 departures below as historical reference—not a timetable for the coming New Year. All times are JST.
All-night service, later last trains and holiday timetables
All-night operation applies to named sections, which may have long gaps between trains. Later last trains can still leave a gap before morning services. A weekend/holiday timetable does not itself mean extra overnight trains. A few special departures are another arrangement again.
Check the operator, line, section, direction and stops. The useful question is not whether “Tokyo trains run all night”, but whether every part of your specific event-to-hotel journey works.
Previous 2025–2026 reference: six JR East sections
This table applies only to the completed December 31, 2025–January 1, 2026 night, from page 9 of JR East’s October 17, 2025 announcement. The 2026–2027 arrangements remain to be announced. Do not travel using this historical table.
| Line | Previous 2025–2026 operating section | Previous New Year’s morning window/interval |
|---|---|---|
| Yamanote | Both directions | Around 01:00–05:00; 10–25 min |
| Keihin-Tohoku/Negishi | Sakuragicho–Omiya | Around 01:00–04:00;15–70 min |
| Chuo/Sobu local | Mitaka–Chiba | Around 00:20–04:40;15–120 min |
| Chuo rapid | Mitaka–Takao | Around 00:50–04:30;40–120 min |
| Yokosuka | Yokohama–Zushi | Around 01:00–05:00;80 min |
| Sobu Main/Narita | Chiba–Narita | Chiba 01:20/03:10; Narita 02:10/03:49; no Higashi-Chiba stop |

The important lesson is the section and frequency, not simply the number of lines. The historical Chuo rapid entry covered Mitaka–Takao, and Yokosuka covered Yokohama–Zushi; neither meant the entire same-named route. Long gaps were unlike a daytime subway service. Narita in this table means Narita Station, not Narita Airport, so it is not an airport connection.
Previous 2025–2026 subway reference: Toei did not run overnight extras
The Toei notice dated November 28, 2025 specified no New Year’s Eve all-night service or later last trains for Toei Subway, the Nippori-Toneri Liner and Tokyo Sakura Tram. That is historical 2025–2026 information, not confirmation of cancellation or repetition in 2026–2027.
Some JR services and a different operator’s absence of extras on the same previous night demonstrate why one announcement cannot answer for the whole network. Tokyo Metro is a separate operator again and needs its own current-season notice.
Four common areas and the return decisions they require
Meiji Jingu and Harajuku
Use Meiji Jingu’s access information to understand the Harajuku, Meiji-jingumae, Yoyogi and Sangubashi approaches. The shrine says ordinary walking from an entrance to the main buildings takes at least another 10 minutes, before worship queues. Start your return calculation where you actually leave the crowd, not at the instant you finish praying.
Compare actual accommodation addresses around Harajuku or Yoyogi if a walking return appeals. Shinjuku is a useful daytime base, but that does not put every Shinjuku hotel within an easy late-night walk. Check the street route first.
Senso-ji and Asakusa
Senso-ji lists Asakusa arrivals on Tobu, the Ginza Line, Tsukuba Express and the Toei Asakusa Line, with ordinary walks around 5 minutes; its Toei entry specifies A 4. These are different arrival points. Follow your operator and direction, not just a sign saying Asakusa.
JR service elsewhere does not create a JR train at Asakusa. A local room needs a checked street walk; accommodation in Ueno or farther away needs a complete connection. Do not assume a cross-district walk is an easy fallback for every traveller.
Tokyo International Forum and Yurakucho
The venue access page quotes ordinary walks of 1 minute from JR Yurakucho and 5 minutes from Tokyo Station. Those estimates exclude dispersing crowds and any closed underground passage. Ginza, Yurakucho and Marunouchi are areas to compare for a street-level return, but check the hotel address and event exit. A further subway connection still needs verification.
Oji
Tokyo Metro’s Oji page provides Namboku Line and interchange geography. For a local shrine visit or event, establish the actual meeting and dispersal points before choosing JR, subway or a walk. A shared station name does not mean every system has the same overnight service.
Choose accommodation by the return journey
A walkable room removes one timetable dependency, but verify its entrance, distance, bridges or underground passages, overnight access and cancellation terms. A straight-line map distance is insufficient, and a connected shopping building may close.
One confirmed train leg can give you more choice. A distant hotel reached through two operators needs both connections checked. Until the seasonal notices appear, flexible bookings or a plan to leave before the last train are stronger choices than depending on an unannounced service.
Check the final leg first, then work backwards
- Record the full hotel address, usable station and actual walking entrance
- Select the correct date and direction in JR East timetables and the other operators’ station pages; after midnight means January 1, 2027
- Find the final workable connection toward the hotel, then work backwards to the event-area departure
- Add time for crowds, luggage collection, walking and transfers; the show’s finish is not your platform arrival
- Recheck Tokyo Metro’s current-year news and Toei’s holiday information when notices appear, including the exact season
Save the date and train destination with the result. If special timetables have not yet loaded, ordinary search results do not prove that extra service will or will not exist.
Fallbacks and ticket decisions
Nearby accommodation, leaving before midnight, or waiting for a confirmed first train somewhere that permits waiting are different options. Stations and cafés are not automatically open all night, and taxis are not guaranteed immediately available. Travellers with children or limited cold-weather stamina should avoid plans that depend on a long outdoor wait.
A pass covers eligible journeys; it does not make a non-operating route run. Identify the operators, travel dates and any reserved-seat supplement before buying. A flight or Shinkansen the next morning is a separate journey to verify, not something guaranteed by last year’s overnight table.
