Tokyo to Enoshima: choose the route from your hotel

For an Enoshima-only day, take Odakyu from Shinjuku to Katase-Enoshima, or take JR from Tokyo or Shinagawa to Fujisawa and change to Odakyu. Katase-Enoshima is the most convenient of the three local stations for the aquarium and the walk onto the island. JR does not run directly to Enoshima.

The decision changes if you also want Kamakura’s temples. In that case, compare a one-way coastal route with the Odakyu Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass. The separate Kamakura and Enoshima day-trip guide covers the full temple-and-island itinerary; this guide focuses on reaching Enoshima, choosing between its stations and avoiding unnecessary pass costs.

Quick comparison: nine ways to plan the journey

Option Route or arrangement Best fit Main trade-off
Ordinary Odakyu trains Shinjuku → Fujisawa → Katase-Enoshima, with changes depending on service Shinjuku hotels and an island-only budget day Unreserved commuter trains; usually a change at Fujisawa
Odakyu Freepass Odakyu return plus unlimited covered local travel and Enoden Several Enoden stops, returning by Odakyu A ticket product, not a separate express service
JR Tokaido Line + Odakyu Tokyo/Shinagawa → Fujisawa → Katase-Enoshima Eastern and southern Tokyo hotels Separate JR and Odakyu fares
JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line + Odakyu Ikebukuro/Shibuya/Ebisu → Fujisawa → Katase-Enoshima Western Tokyo without returning to Odakyu Shinjuku Check the branch and destination
JR + Shonan Monorail JR → Ofuna → Shonan-Enoshima A suspended-monorail ride or travel via Ofuna Longer final walk than Katase-Enoshima
Romancecar Shinjuku → Fujisawa or Katase-Enoshima A reserved seat when the timetable fits Extra charge; weekday morning island service is limited
Group day tour Tokyo meeting point → booked Kamakura/Enoshima stops Fewer transport decisions Fixed sightseeing time
Private charter Agreed Tokyo pickup and coastal itinerary Families or a group sharing the cost Traffic, price and vehicle restrictions
Rental car Tokyo → Shonan coast A wider trip to Hayama, Zushi or Hakone Parking queues and weekend congestion

Allow roughly 65–80 minutes for an ordinary Odakyu journey from Shinjuku, before the island walk. From Tokyo via Fujisawa, about 60–75 minutes is a useful planning range when connections work. These are station-to-station estimates: add the journey from your hotel, transfer waits and walking to the attraction.

Is there a direct JR train, bus or Shinkansen?

JR reaches Fujisawa and Ofuna, not the three Enoshima-area stations. At Fujisawa, change to Odakyu for Katase-Enoshima or Enoden for Enoshima Station. At Ofuna, change to the Shonan Monorail for Shonan-Enoshima.

Some Romancecar services run directly from Shinjuku to Katase-Enoshima, but an ordinary Odakyu journey may require a change at Fujisawa or Sagami-Ono. “Rapid Express” does not guarantee a through train to the coast. Search for Katase-Enoshima as the final station and follow the train’s actual destination.

A frequent direct highway bus from central Tokyo is not the standard independent route. Tours and occasional sightseeing services are separate products. There is no reason to take the Shinkansen solely to reach Enoshima: it adds expense and a less useful interchange.

Which Tokyo departure station makes sense?

Shinjuku, Yoyogi and Shimokitazawa bases favour Odakyu. At the large Shinjuku complex, follow signs for Odakyu rather than entering the JR gates by habit. Allow time to find the correct platform, particularly if you have reserved a Romancecar.

Tokyo Station, Ginza, Nihombashi and Shimbashi bases generally favour the JR Tokaido Line to Fujisawa. Shinagawa is also convenient for this southbound route. It rarely makes sense to cross Tokyo to Shinjuku merely to save a small amount on the longer journey.

From Shibuya, Ebisu or Ikebukuro, compare a suitable Shonan-Shinjuku Line service. From Ueno, an appropriate Ueno-Tokyo Line through train can reach Fujisawa; from Asakusa, first connect to a suitable JR station. From Yokohama, both Fujisawa–Odakyu and Ofuna–monorail are sensible choices. Choose the former for the closest island station, the latter for the monorail experience.

If your hotel is not booked, the Tokyo accommodation guide explains the districts in Traditional Chinese. Base the transport choice on your actual hotel, not on the cheapest fare from a station across the city.

1. Ordinary Odakyu trains from Shinjuku

Take Odakyu toward Fujisawa, changing at Sagami-Ono if required by your service, then continue to Katase-Enoshima. The route can be thought of as Shinjuku → Sagami-Ono → Fujisawa → Katase-Enoshima, but that does not mean you must leave every train at every listed station. Use the journey planner to identify the actual changes.

The adult base fare from Shinjuku to Katase-Enoshima is ¥650 with a paper ticket or ¥649 by IC card. Ordinary trains need no seat reservation or limited-express supplement. This is usually the straightforward budget choice for a Shinjuku-based visitor spending the day on Enoshima rather than taking several Enoden rides.

Commuter trains can be crowded, and a seat is not guaranteed. Avoid taking large suitcases onto the island. Families should allow more transfer time than the minimum shown in an app and check lifts if using a stroller.

2. Travel with the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass

The one-day Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass from Shinjuku costs ¥1,640 for adults and ¥430 for children. It combines one return journey between the origin and Fujisawa on Odakyu with unlimited Odakyu travel between Fujisawa and Katase-Enoshima and unlimited Enoden travel. It also has participating-facility benefits; these are not blanket free admission.

The Fujisawa-origin version costs ¥810 for adults and ¥410 for children. It covers the designated local Odakyu segment and Enoden, without travel from Tokyo. Compare it with the ¥800 Enoden-only pass when you will also use Odakyu between Fujisawa and Katase-Enoshima.

Use it when you will visit Enoshima, stop along the Enoden coast and return through Fujisawa on Odakyu. It does not cover JR, the Shonan Monorail or a Romancecar supplement. A journey back from Kamakura directly to Tokyo by JR is an extra fare, even if you hold the pass.

For an island-only return from Shinjuku, two ordinary paper tickets total ¥1,300, which is ¥340 below the adult pass. Add your planned Enoden rides before deciding: simply seeing “Enoshima” in the pass name is not a reason to buy it.

3. JR from Tokyo or Shinagawa via Fujisawa

Take a southbound JR Tokaido Line train to Fujisawa, leave the JR gates and follow the Odakyu signs for Katase-Enoshima. This is generally the most direct arrangement from Tokyo Station, Ginza, Nihombashi, Shimbashi or Shinagawa. Fujisawa is an operator interchange, so leave a buffer for walking and the next departure.

From Tokyo Station, the ordinary paper-fare example is ¥1,040 for JR to Fujisawa plus ¥170 for Odakyu, a total of ¥1,210. The corresponding IC amounts are ¥1,034 plus ¥167, totalling ¥1,201. The figures reflect JR East’s March 14, 2026 fare revision. Fares from Shinagawa and other stations differ.

This costs more than beginning at Odakyu Shinjuku, but travelling across Tokyo first can erase any practical saving. Use Suica or PASMO for a simple mixed-operator day; buying an Odakyu-origin pass does not cover the JR approach from Tokyo.

4. Shonan-Shinjuku Line from Shibuya, Ebisu or Ikebukuro

A southbound Shonan-Shinjuku service on the Tokaido branch can take you to Fujisawa, where you change to Odakyu. This avoids doubling back to Tokyo Station and may be easier than transferring to Odakyu at Shinjuku when you start in Shibuya or Ebisu.

The important detail is the branch: southbound Shonan-Shinjuku trains do not all follow the same route. A service heading toward Zushi follows the Kamakura branch rather than Fujisawa. Follow your planner’s change at Ofuna when required, and check the platform destination instead of boarding by line colour alone.

Search all the way to Katase-Enoshima so the planner includes the Odakyu connection. An arrival time at Fujisawa is not your arrival on the island.

5. JR to Ofuna, then the Shonan Monorail

At Ofuna, change from JR to the suspended Shonan Monorail for Shonan-Enoshima. The full monorail ride takes about 14 minutes. Its hills and curves make it an enjoyable transport experience, and it can be a useful return route when you want to avoid retracing the Enoden coast.

The adult one-way fare is ¥340, the same with cash or a compatible IC card, according to the official fare table and route map. JR to Ofuna is separate. This route suits Yokohama, Ofuna and northern Kamakura connections, but it is not the closest station to the island.

After arrival, walk through the station area toward Enoden Enoshima Station and the coast. Budget roughly 15–20 minutes to the island approach, more in crowds. The aquarium gives a 10-minute walk from Shonan-Enoshima, compared with three minutes from Katase-Enoshima.

6. Romancecar: reserve a seat and check weekday destinations

Romancecar is an all-reserved-seat limited express. For Shinjuku–Katase-Enoshima, add ¥700 for a ticketless limited-express ticket or ¥750 for a regular limited-express ticket to the base fare. With a ¥650 paper base ticket, that is ¥1,350 or ¥1,400. A Freepass can cover the eligible base journey, but the supplement is still separate.

It is a comfortable option for children or travellers who want a guaranteed booked seat. However, the weekday timetable is particularly important: the published morning Enoshima No. 1 departs Shinjuku at 07:10 and terminates at Fujisawa at 08:03, requiring an ordinary-train connection to Katase-Enoshima. Direct weekday departures to the island are later in the day. Weekend and holiday morning services differ.

Check the current Romancecar timetable and the official fare table before choosing a train. Do not sacrifice several hours on the island solely to wait for a particular express.

7. A Kamakura and Enoshima group day tour

A group tour can combine a Tokyo meeting point with selected coastal and temple stops. It suits travellers who want the transport sequence arranged and are happy to follow a fixed schedule. The booked option may include an Enoden ride, the Great Buddha or Kamakurakokomae; do not assume every listing includes all of them.

Compare the time actually allocated to Enoshima. A brief island stop will not give you an unhurried aquarium visit, the caves and sunset. Check the guide language, meeting point, child policy, admission inclusions and cancellation conditions before booking. A bus tour is not a railway pass.

8. A private charter from Tokyo

A private vehicle can reduce station changes for a family, a small group or travellers with a stroller. Agree on the Tokyo pickup area, hours, stops, passenger and luggage capacity, child seats, tolls, parking and overtime before comparing quotes.

Its main advantage is flexibility rather than guaranteed speed. Tokyo and the Shonan coast can both be congested, and Enoshima still involves walking after drop-off. A private charter cannot drive you along every upper-island path or remove the stairs to Iwaya. Tell the operator about mobility requirements and request suitable stops rather than assuming the standard itinerary is accessible.

9. Driving to Enoshima

Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours or more from Tokyo depending on the starting point and traffic, then add parking time. Renting solely for a return trip to Enoshima usually adds more work than it saves. Coastal roads and car parks are particularly busy on fine weekends.

A car becomes more useful for a wider route through Zushi, Hayama, the Miura Peninsula or an overnight Shonan trip. Include rental charges, tolls, fuel, parking and suitable insurance in the comparison, and make sure your driving documents are valid in Japan. The aquarium has no dedicated car park; nearby paid parking serves the area.

Which ticket or attraction package should you buy?

Ticket Useful when Watch out for
Suica/PASMO or ordinary tickets You only visit Enoshima or mix operators in one direction Each railway charges separately
Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass You start near an Odakyu station and use several Enoden rides No JR, monorail or Romancecar supplement
Enoden Noriorikun You are already at Fujisawa/Kamakura and make several coastal stops No Tokyo approach or Odakyu segment
Shonan Monorail day ticket You make extra stops along the monorail A simple Ofuna–Enoshima return costs less
Odakyu aquarium combination The aquarium is the main attraction Compare the actual origin, age band and included travel
Island attraction combination You will use the specified Escar, tower, cave or aquarium facilities Packages differ; night events and the aquarium are not included in every version
Hakone Kamakura Pass A genuine multi-day Hakone and coast itinerary fits its coverage Too much coverage for an island-only day
JR TOKYO Wide Pass You already have it for eligible wider JR travel The final Odakyu, Enoden or monorail ride still costs extra

Use the aquarium’s official admission and combination-ticket information and Sea Candle’s official package comparison to choose the exact product. A railway pass and an island admission package solve different problems. Do not buy both an Enoden day pass and a Freepass that already includes Enoden unless there is a specific separate travel day.

Is the Odakyu Freepass worth it?

It is strongest for Shinjuku → Fujisawa → Enoden sightseeing → Katase-Enoshima/Fujisawa → Shinjuku. Add the individual fares for the coastal stops you genuinely intend to make. The price difference above ordinary Shinjuku return tickets is small enough that several Enoden rides can justify it, but the exact saving depends on the segments.

It is weaker for a Tokyo Station JR arrival, an aquarium-only visit or a one-way JR return from Kamakura. Do not confuse “unlimited local travel” with unlimited travel all the way back to Shinjuku: the origin–Fujisawa section is one return journey. If you finish in Kamakura, return along Enoden to Fujisawa for the included Odakyu ride, or budget separately for the faster JR alternative.

Is the Enoden day pass worth it?

Noriorikun costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children and covers unlimited Enoden travel for one day. It suits a sequence such as Fujisawa → Enoshima → Kamakurakokomae → Hase → Kamakura with several stops. One ride from Enoshima to Kamakura, or a simple return, may cost less as separate fares.

Count the actual rides rather than using a blanket rule that three rides always break even. The operator’s pass page explains purchase and benefits. At Kamakura, paper and QR pass users must use Enoden’s West Exit: since July 14, 2026, the internal JR transfer gate only accepts the same single transport IC card used for both operators.

Is the Shonan Monorail day ticket worth it?

The day ticket costs ¥750 for adults and ¥380 for children following the March 14, 2026 revision. Two adult rides between Ofuna and Shonan-Enoshima cost ¥680, so a simple return is ¥70 cheaper without the pass. Consider the day ticket for intermediate stops or benefits you will actually use, not merely because you travel both ways.

Five realistic Enoshima itineraries

Island-focused day

Arrive at Katase-Enoshima in the morning, then choose between the aquarium and a longer island walk. Cross Benten Bridge, walk up Nakamise-dori, visit the shrine and continue toward the Sea Candle. Add Chigogafuchi and Iwaya only if there is enough time before cave closing. Trying to spend several hours at the aquarium and also cover every island attraction can make this a long day.

Kamakura and Enoshima in one day

Start early in Kamakura, continue to Hase for a chosen temple or the Great Buddha, then travel along Enoden toward Enoshima. This protects earlier temple entry times and leaves the coast for later. Freepass users can reach Kamakura through Fujisawa and return the same operator’s way; JR arrivals can finish through Fujisawa without retracing the entire coast. An island-first version is possible, but shorten Enoshima so you do not reach Hase after last admission.

Family aquarium day

Take Odakyu to Katase-Enoshima, visit the aquarium, have lunch and allow time by the coast. Add the bridge, shopping street and lower shrine only if everyone still has energy. Skip Iwaya and central Kamakura rather than turning the day into a race. The Tokyo family-hotel guide is useful for choosing a convenient base.

Enoden photography and sunset

Start around Kamakura or Hase, choose one or two coastal stops and finish near Enoshima. Allow time for the walk and any Sea Candle queue before sunset. At Kamakurakokomae, stay off the road and tracks and do not obstruct residents. Cloud and humidity determine Mount Fuji visibility; no itinerary can guarantee the view.

Two days and one night

Spend day one around Kita-Kamakura, central Kamakura and Hase, and day two on the island and coast. Kamakura suits temple access, Fujisawa suits transport and restaurant choice, and Katase-Kaigan suits the aquarium and sunset. This is worth considering for evening events, the full cave walk or a slower family pace. It is not necessary for a standard island day trip.

Three stations: walking to the aquarium and island

Station Operator Aquarium walk Island approach
Katase-Enoshima Odakyu About 3 minutes Most convenient; roughly 10–15 minutes to the island side of the bridge
Enoshima Enoden About 10 minutes Walk along Subana-dori; roughly 15–20 minutes to the island approach
Shonan-Enoshima Shonan Monorail About 10 minutes Walk past the Enoden station area toward the coast; allow roughly 15–20 minutes

These names are not interchangeable, and none of the stations is on the island. Allow more time to reach the shrine, upper garden, Sea Candle or caves. Open the official Enoshima–Kamakura area maps, the aquarium’s access map and the Sea Candle access guide to check the final walking route.

The Escar helps with the uphill sections but operates upward only; it does not eliminate the descent or the many stairs toward Iwaya. The Bentenmaru boat is weather-dependent and normally finishes around 14:30, so it is not a dependable return after a late-afternoon cave visit. Check its official operating information before relying on it.

Samuel Cocking Garden’s Sunset Terrace is closed from June 16, 2026, until reconstruction finishes, scheduled for late November 2026. The garden and Sea Candle remain open, with no lift stop at the terrace floor. Check the official notice for reopening.

From Haneda Airport to Enoshima

Take Keikyu toward Yokohama, then use JR to Fujisawa and Odakyu to Katase-Enoshima. Alternatively, change from JR at Ofuna to the monorail. The best connection depends on the terminal and departure time; both involve more changes than starting from a Tokyo hotel.

After a flight, leave large luggage at your hotel or an available storage facility before sightseeing. For a late arrival, settle into Tokyo, Yokohama or Fujisawa rather than trying to reach the island’s attractions that night. The Haneda airport-hotel guide covers overnight options in Traditional Chinese.

From Narita Airport to Enoshima

Narita is much farther away. A Narita Express service to Shinagawa or Yokohama can connect with JR toward Fujisawa, followed by Odakyu. Another option is Narita Express to Shinjuku and then Odakyu, which makes more sense when you are dropping luggage at a Shinjuku hotel first. Check the actual Narita Express destination, since services differ.

Do not plan a full island-and-Kamakura day immediately after a long flight. Start fresh the next morning and give yourself time for station transfers. The Narita–Shinjuku transport guide helps with that airport leg.

Mistakes that make this day harder

  • Adding Enoshima, Kamakura and a substantial Yokohama visit to the same day. Choose two nearby priorities at most and leave time for walking.
  • Buying a national or regional JR pass just for Enoshima. The JR approach alone does not normally justify it, and the final private railway is separate.
  • Assuming every Rapid Express or Romancecar reaches Katase-Enoshima without a change.
  • Bringing suitcases onto steep island lanes or crowded Enoden trains. Storage can fill, so leaving luggage at the hotel is simpler.
  • Confusing an uphill Escar ride with a step-free island visit. Plan the return walk before going farther.
  • Arriving late and still expecting to cover the aquarium, tower and caves. Check each facility’s hours and choose a shorter plan.
  • Relying on a final train or on the Bentenmaru after sunset. Leave room for a missed connection and use the actual date’s timetable.
  • Blocking the Kamakurakokomae crossing for a photograph. It is a working road and railway.

Tokyo to Enoshima: frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way from Tokyo?

From Shinjuku, use Odakyu to Katase-Enoshima. From Tokyo or Shinagawa, take JR to Fujisawa and change to Odakyu. These choices minimise unnecessary travel across Tokyo.

Can I go directly by JR?

No. Change at Fujisawa for Odakyu or Enoden, or at Ofuna for the monorail.

How long should I allow?

Roughly an hour to an hour and twenty minutes from the main Tokyo departure stations is a useful railway planning range, depending on service. Add your hotel journey, waits and the walk to the island.

Is Enoshima a good day trip?

Yes. An island-only day is less rushed than a full Kamakura combination. Start in the morning for the aquarium and longer island routes.

Should I buy the Freepass for an island-only visit?

Usually not from Shinjuku: ordinary Odakyu adult return tickets cost less. Compare the pass when adding several Enoden journeys.

Which station is closest?

Katase-Enoshima is the most convenient for the island and aquarium. Enoden Enoshima and Shonan-Enoshima are farther inland.

Is driving better with children?

Only when the wider itinerary makes a car useful. Parking queues can outweigh the convenience on an island-only day. A reserved Romancecar and a shortened aquarium itinerary may be easier.

Should we stay overnight?

Stay for a slower two-day Kamakura/coast trip, sunset or evening events. A standard Enoshima visit can comfortably be a day trip without using the last train.

What works for older visitors or limited mobility?

Prioritise the aquarium, coast and lower island. Reserve seats where helpful and assess each attraction’s access separately. Neither the Escar nor a private vehicle removes all island stairs.

Final choice: island day or coastal circuit?

For a simple Enoshima day, pick the railway that fits your hotel and arrive at Katase-Enoshima. Use ordinary tickets when you will stay around the aquarium and island. Add the monorail for the experience or a convenient Ofuna connection; add a pass only when the actual rides justify it.

For a wider trip, start with the Traditional Chinese Kamakura transport guide or the English combined-day guide linked above, and compare other destinations in the Tokyo day-trip guide. Further planning guides cover Kamakura, Yokohama, Hakone and Tokyo. Leave enough space in the day to enjoy the coast rather than merely passing through it.
