The best tonkatsu restaurant for your Tokyo trip depends on more than its score. A quick set meal near Ueno, a pork-breed comparison in Nishiazabu and a sequence of cutlets in Ginza are very different meals. Start with where you will spend the day, then decide whether you want a flexible walk-in lunch or a dinner reserved in advance.
All 20 restaurants in this guide have a Tabelog score of at least 3.40, checked on October 12, 2026. The selection spans neighborhoods, spending levels and dining styles rather than following a score ranking. For a straightforward set meal, look at Okachimachi, Yoyogi-Uehara or Kamata. For different pork breeds, consider Butagumi or tonkatsu.jp; for pale-coated cutlets or multi-cut meals, look at Kenshin, Narikura and Katsukami.
Rosu, hire and tonkatsu courses: what to choose
Rosu (ロース) is pork loin, usually with a strip of fat. Hire (ヒレ) means fillet or tenderloin, a leaner cut. Start with loin if you want both meat and fat, or fillet if you prefer lean pork. Check portion weights as well as labels such as “special” or “premium”: a larger serving is not automatically the right order for your appetite.
Pale-coated tonkatsu owes its appearance to factors such as low-sugar breadcrumbs and the frying method, rather than one particular breed of pig. A multi-cut course or combination set makes sense if you want to compare different preparations. A conventional set meal is easier to fit into an ordinary lunch budget and sightseeing day.
Compare 20 Tokyo tonkatsu restaurants
Amounts are per person in Japanese yen. Except for the menu prices specified at Narikura and Taiyo, these are Tabelog’s listed spending ranges, not quotations for a particular course. Drinks, extras and reserved menus may cost more. In particular, a lunch reservation at Oryu or Kenshin does not give access to every regular lunch option.

The 20 restaurants in detail
1. Tonpachitei (とん八亭)

Tonpachitei is an easy lunch stop when you are exploring Ameyoko and Ueno. It uses Japanese branded pork and pure lard for slow frying, with loin and fillet sets providing a straightforward choice between a fattier cut and a leaner one.
Its short lunch service ends when the food sells out. Put lunch before your afternoon wandering rather than relying on a late arrival; the brief walk from Okachimachi makes that a practical plan.
- Address
- 東京都 台東区 上野 4-3-4
- Getting there
- About 2 minutes on foot from JR Okachimachi, Ueno-hirokoji or Ueno-okachimachi stations.

- No reservations; join the queue at the restaurant.

2. Nishiazabu Butagumi (西麻布 豚組)

Butagumi makes the pork itself the main decision. Its changing selection spans different breeds and producers, making it especially appealing if you have already tried a standard loin set and want to compare what goes into it.
Allow time for the walk into Nishiazabu rather than treating it as a station-side stop. Lunch has a lower listed spending range than dinner, while larger parties should arrange seating directly instead of assuming one large table will be available.
- Address
- 東京都 港区 西麻布 2-24-9
- Getting there
- About 8 minutes from Nogizaka Station exit 5, or 9 minutes from Roppongi Station exit 2.
- Reservations
- Book through the restaurant’s Toreta page. Contact the restaurant for parties larger than eight. It does not accept AutoReserve bookings. Book with Toreta

3. Hasegawa Ryogoku (はせ川)

Hasegawa uses Hirata Farm’s Hiramaki Bark Sangen pork and breadcrumbs developed with its supplier. It suits a straightforward cutlet meal centered on the pork and coating rather than a long tasting course. The Ryogoku branch is roughly two minutes from the JR station’s east exit.
The key distinction is the booking policy. Lunch is walk-in, while dinner can be reserved. If your day includes a timed activity, a dinner booking is easier to plan around; the restaurant also invites phone enquiries when online tables appear full.
- Address
- 東京都 墨田区 両国 3-24-1 両国尾崎ビル 103

- About 2 minutes from JR Ryogoku Station’s east exit, or 6 minutes from the Oedo Line’s A4 exit.

4. Tonkatsu Oryu (とんかつ 王龍)
Oryu is a neighborhood restaurant in Shirokane, selecting Japanese branded pork according to supply. It serves lunch and dinner, but the lower lunch spending range comes with an important booking distinction.
A reserved lunch seat requires ordering from the dinner menu. Choose between the regular walk-in lunch and the certainty of a reservation before setting your budget; the listed lunch range should not be treated as the cost of a booked meal.

5. Sugita (すぎ田)

Sugita focuses on a thin coating and the pork beneath it. Pork sauté is offered alongside tonkatsu, giving you an alternative to a fried cutlet without committing to a long tasting menu.
It fits naturally into a Kuramae and Asakusa day, with access from both Kuramae and Tawaramachi. Build some slack into your walk after booking: arriving late or reducing the party size on the day can be treated as a cancellation and incur charges.
- Address
- 東京都 台東区 寿 3-8-3
- Getting there
- About 3 minutes from Kuramae’s Oedo Line exit A5, 4 minutes from Tawaramachi exits 1 or 2, or 7 minutes from Kuramae’s Asakusa Line exit A4.

6. Tonkatsu Takeshin Yoyogi-Uehara (とんかつ武信 代々木上原店)

Takeshin’s Yoyogi-Uehara branch offers soy-sauce katsudon as well as tonkatsu, making it a useful choice when you want to move beyond the standard set-meal format. It is a short walk from the station and suits a relaxed neighborhood afternoon.
The listed spending range is among the lower ones in this selection. Seating cannot be reserved, though, so keep your next appointment flexible instead of assuming the short walk will translate into a quick meal.
- Address
- 東京都 渋谷区 西原 3-1-7 ティーズプレイス 1F

7. TONKATSU KEITA (TONKATSU KEITA)

KEITA specializes in Roppaku Kurobuta pork, adjusting its frying approach to the meat. The reservation-only format suits travelers who want a confirmed meal in their itinerary rather than an open-ended queue.
Use the current Shoan address beneath the railway in Nishi-Ogikubo, not the former premises. Monday service is takeaway only, so secure a dine-in slot before building a neighborhood day around the restaurant.

8. Tonkatsu Kenshin (とんかつ憲進)

Kenshin offers a relatively approachable way into pale-coated tonkatsu. Its method uses low-temperature frying, low-sugar breadcrumbs and lard, with branded pork such as Hitachi no Kagayaki appearing on the menu as available.
Pair it with a walk through Kagurazaka, but make the menu choice part of your booking decision. Weekday lunch reservations use a restricted menu and a one-hour dining period; a booked seat does not mean every lunch option is included.
- Address
- 東京都 新宿区 神楽坂 3-1-23 Ami神楽坂 2F
- Getting there
- About 7 minutes from Kagurazaka or Iidabashi stations; B4b is the nearest Iidabashi subway exit.

9. Ponchiken (ポンチ軒)

Ponchiken is a convenient Kanda-Ogawamachi stop for loin or fillet sets, especially on a day spent around Ochanomizu or the bookshops of Jimbocho. You can keep the meal within the same part of town.
The listed lunch and dinner spending ranges are similar; the more useful distinction is booking. Lunch needs queue flexibility, while dinner can be arranged by phone. The website’s contact form is not a general reservation channel.
- Address

10. Tonkatsu Kokomade Yaruka (とんかつ ここまでやるか。)

Kokomade Yaruka combines branded pork with fried seafood, giving it a broader focus than a single pork-cutlet set. It is worth considering if you want several kinds of fried dishes and are making dinner a main event.
There is a substantial gap between its listed lunch and dinner spending ranges, so check the menu for your chosen session. Gaienmae provides straightforward access to the Minami-Aoyama address. Bring a supported cashless payment method.

11. Tonkatsu Aoki Kamata Honten (とんかつ檍 蒲田本店)

Aoki Kamata Honten is a useful reason to explore tonkatsu in southern Tokyo. It uses Hayashi SPF pork, and the listed lunch range makes it accessible as a set-meal stop. This entry is specifically for the Kamata main branch.
JR Kamata’s east exit is the closest approach; Keikyu Kamata involves a longer walk. There are no reservations, so give lunch its own space in the itinerary, particularly if you have a flight later that day.
- Address
- 東京都 大田区 蒲田 5-43-7 ロイヤルハイツ蒲田102
- Getting there
- About 4 minutes from JR Kamata’s east exit, 7 minutes from Tokyu Kamata, or 10 minutes from Keikyu Kamata’s west exit.

12. Tonta (とん太)
Tonta offers special loin and special fillet sets, keeping the focus on your preferred cut rather than a sequence of small courses. It is a traditional set-meal alternative to the reserved tasting menus elsewhere in Takadanobaba.
The decisive detail is the narrow schedule: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with no reservations. It should be a deliberately planned dinner, not a generic lunch backup you expect to find open every day.
- Address
- 東京都 豊島区 高田 3-17-8
- Getting there
- About 6 minutes from Takadanobaba Station, served by JR, the Seibu Shinjuku Line and the Tozai Line.

13. Ginza Katsukami (銀座かつかみ)
Katsukami presents tonkatsu as a sequence of cuts rather than one large plate, with wine pairings available. Choose it when you want to spend an evening comparing different parts of the pig and have budgeted for a course restaurant.
This is the original Ginza 5-chome location, with dinner starts at 6pm and 8pm. Lunch is being directed to Katsukami II; keep that separate branch out of the plan when booking dinner at the address below.

14. Tonkatsu Narikura (とんかつ成蔵)

Narikura’s pale coating is its signature, and the current set brings together loin, mille-feuille pork and its Sha-ton-briand cutlet, plus two additional fried items. It is a focused way to compare several preparations in one meal.
Treat it as a destination booking. The tax-inclusive set costs ¥9,900, with a ¥390 per-seat reservation fee, bringing the starting total to ¥10,290 before drinks or extras. Seatings last 70 minutes and guests must be at least 12.

15. Tokyo Tonkatsu Gavuu (東京とんかつ がぶう)

Gavuu combines branded pork, fresh breadcrumbs and hagama-cooked rice in a basement restaurant close to Okachimachi. It is a useful option when you want a tonkatsu meal around Ueno with a booking rather than relying entirely on a queue.
The short station approach fits an Ameyoko or Ueno outing. Keep your confirmation handy: reservations and changes are handled through Tabelog, and the restaurant does not provide an enquiry phone number.
- Address
- 東京都 台東区 上野 4-6-4 OGSⅡ B1F

16. Katsu Prepork Shinjuku (Katsuプリポー)

Katsu Prepork’s Shinjuku restaurant emphasizes branded pork and a two-stage frying method. Its Kabukicho location suits a shopping or evening itinerary, but both lunch and dinner sit above the everyday set-meal price range.
Check the branch before choosing a dish from a photo: katsudon is now served only at the Harajuku restaurant. The booking and address here are for Shinjuku, where the focus should be its tonkatsu offering.
- Address

17. Mochibuta Tonkatsu Taiyo (もち豚とんかつ たいよう)
Taiyo uses Waton Mochibuta pork for loin, fillet and minced-pork cutlet sets. It suits travelers who enjoy a neighborhood meal away from the major hubs, with Musashi-Koyama providing the setting for a slower outing.
The menu lists a 110g loin set at ¥2,000, a 160g upper-loin set at ¥2,550 and a 90g fillet set at ¥2,100. Lunch is walk-in, while dinner can be reserved by phone; service may end early when ingredients run out.

18. Tonkatsu Kurogane Omori (とんかつ 鉄)
Kurogane uses Hayashi SPF pork, Japanese lard and specially made low-sugar breadcrumbs. It provides a bookable option for exploring tonkatsu in southern Tokyo, a useful contrast with the walk-in restaurants around Kamata.
The restaurant is downstairs in Minami-Oi, roughly five minutes from JR Omori’s north exit. Its lower listed lunch range makes it worth considering for a daytime set meal; check the Omori address and look for the basement entrance.

19. Tonkatsu Hinata (とんかつひなた)
Hinata uses Kampo pork from Miyagi and offers both regular sets and a course comparing different cuts. The latter is relevant if your group wants to look beyond loin and fillet; a casual lunch is a separate proposition.
Reservations currently apply only to courses after 5pm and are limited to parties of four. Couples and solo travelers should not treat that as a general table-booking option, and the listed set-meal spending range is not a course quotation.
- Address
- 東京都 新宿区 高田馬場 2-13-9 鈴木ビル1階

20. tonkatsu.jp Omotesando (tonkatsu.jp 表参道)

tonkatsu.jp builds its menu around branded pork from different parts of Japan, with the selection changing according to supply. It is a convenient way to make an Omotesando shopping day include a more considered choice of pork and cut.
Lunch uses an on-site waiting system: register, place your order and receive a QR-code ticket for notifications. Dinner can be booked ahead. Choose the latter if you want a fixed meal time rather than planning shopping around a queue.

Build a day around one main meal
Ueno, Ameyoko and Kuramae
For an Ueno and Ameyoko day, choose between Tonpachitei’s walk-in lunch and a booking at Gavuu. If your plans focus on Kuramae and Asakusa, Sugita is a more natural fit. Leave the afternoon for exploring rather than scheduling a second large meal.
Omotesando, Aoyama and Roppongi
On an Omotesando shopping day, decide between tonkatsu.jp’s lunch waiting system and a dinner reservation. Kokomade Yaruka fits activities nearer Gaienmae. Make Butagumi the main meal when comparing pork breeds is the priority, allowing time for the walk into Nishiazabu.
Shinjuku, Takadanobaba and western Tokyo
Katsu Prepork fits a Shinjuku shopping day. A party of four interested in a cut-comparison course can look into Hinata’s dinner booking. Tonta requires a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday evening; KEITA and Narikura need a reservation before you build the day around them. Give Nishi-Ogikubo or Minami-Asagaya room in the itinerary instead of rushing out west for a last-minute meal.
Ginza dinners and southern Tokyo
Make Katsukami the centerpiece of a Ginza evening, working backward from the 6pm or 8pm seating. Kurogane in Omori and Aoki in Kamata are useful when you are already spending time in southern Tokyo. If you have a flight that day, allow separate buffers for the meal queue and the airport journey.
Five details to check before booking
- Choose the right branch: Katsukami and Katsukami II have different meal arrangements, Prepork’s katsudon is in Harajuku, and KEITA has moved.
- Separate lunch from dinner: Hasegawa, Ponchiken, Taiyo and tonkatsu.jp do not offer lunch bookings simply because they accept dinner reservations.
- Distinguish spending ranges from menu prices: Narikura has a booking fee, Hinata reserves specific courses, and a booked lunch at Oryu uses the dinner menu.
- Prepare a payment method: KEITA and Kokomade Yaruka are cashless.
- Leave room for queues: arriving at a walk-in restaurant does not mean immediate seating, and lunch-only places may sell out before the advertised end of service.
Tokyo tonkatsu FAQ
Where should I try tonkatsu on a first Tokyo trip?
Choose an area already in your itinerary. Tonpachitei and Gavuu suit Ueno or Okachimachi, tonkatsu.jp fits Omotesando, and Katsu Prepork is in Shinjuku. Rework half a day around Narikura or Katsukami only when that particular meal is a priority.
What is the difference between rosu and hire?
Rosu is loin and usually includes a strip of fat; hire is leaner tenderloin. Pick the cut you prefer, then compare portion weight, pork breed and price rather than treating a “premium” label as the only deciding factor.
Do all Tokyo tonkatsu restaurants require reservations?
No. Tonpachitei, Takeshin Yoyogi-Uehara, Aoki Kamata Honten and Tonta are walk-in only. KEITA and Narikura require reservations. Other restaurants restrict bookings to dinner or particular courses, so use the method listed for each exact branch.
How much should I budget?
Many ordinary set-meal restaurants sit around ¥1,000–3,999, while branded pork and evening courses can cost more. Narikura starts at ¥10,290 including its set and booking fee, before extras. Katsukami’s listed dinner range is ¥10,000–14,999.
Can children eat at Narikura?
Narikura accepts guests aged 12 and over. That does not establish the policy at other restaurants; check ages, party size and ordering requirements with the restaurant when booking.
Is the highest Tabelog score always the best choice?
A score helps narrow the field, but location, budget, pork cut and booking style matter just as much on a trip. Every restaurant here meets the 3.40 threshold; the useful next step is choosing one or two that fit your plans.
